Impulso Trio

Brandon Wozniak, saxophone
Dean Magraw, guitar
Jay Epstein, percussion

Three of the area’s most exciting improvisers meet in an intimate, explosive setting. The group describes their sound as “an interactive mélange of improvisational spice.”

Since moving to Minneapolis in 2006, Brandon Wozniak has been a very in-demand saxophonist. He is regularly seen with the Atlantis Quartet and Monk in Motian, and has backed up singers like Katie Gearty and Bruce Henry. His brawny, bold sound and technical prowess bring to mind one of his private instructors, Chris Potter.

Dean Magraw has a resume too long and varied for this page to list. He studied classical guitar at the University of Minnesota and the Berklee School of Music, and has spent decades performing in jazz, bluegrass, folk and other situations. A short list of collaborators: Peter Ostroushko, Claudia Schmidt, Greg Brown, Nigel Kennedy, Nirmala Rajasheker, Bill Carrothers, Anthony Cox. A Dean Magraw performance is always an unforgettable journey.

Jay Epstein is a busy drummer, seen all over the Twin Cities with artists like Christine Rosholt, Bill Carrothers, Gordy Johnson, Benny Weinbeck, and Mary Louise Knutson. His trademark shimmering cymbal sound and unique timbral effects make a lasting impression on listeners.
