American Songwriters Series

A series of shows celebrating exceptional American Songwriters, who have made major contributions to the musical landscape, and continue to ply their craft.
Throughout this summer, the Dakota plans to highlight these shows in intimate stripped-down performances by a select group of great American singers and songwriters.
May 26-27 – Ricky Lee Jones
One of the most celebrated singer/songwriters of her generation in a rare intimate setting! Her brand of pop music, informed by the improvisatory nature of jazz and the sheer emotional impact of soul, have garnered her two Grammy awards and accolades from all corners of the art and music world. Now in her 30th year in music, this “Duchess of Coolsville” is proving to be at the height of her powers as a songwriter and performer.
July 5-6 Rosanne Cash
Grammy-winning singer/songwriter Rosanne Cash may have become famous because of her father (music legend Johnny Cash), but she has certainly backed that fame up with her music. Over her 30 year recording career, Cash has scored eleven number one hits from her fourteen albums. While owing a lot to the folk and country traditions, Cash’s lyrics and music are poignant and personal, giving her songs substance and weight that elude most “crossover” artists.
August 24-26 – Suzanne Vega
Suzanne Vega is one of the most brilliant songwriters of her generation. She single-handedly ignited the contemporary folk revival of the early 1980s with her acoustic guitar and clear, distinctive voice. Her performances steer clear of dramatic histrionics but are still emotional experiences, allowing listeners to focus on her masterful storytelling.
