The Jazz is Now! NOWnet is one of the premier jazz ensembles in the Midwest, a hard-swinging group created in the tradition of the Charles Mingus Workshop and the old Midwest territory bands. The group ranges in size from six to ten players and is one of the few working groups in the country that solely performs original music.
The NOWnet is known as a composers’ ensemble, meaning that core members all compose for the band. All members are top-call Twin Cities jazz musicians nationally recognized for both their composing and performing abilities. Artistic director Jeremy Walker founded the NOWnet in 2004 as the centerpiece of the Minneapolis-based nonprofit Jazz is NOW!. The ensemble showcases the compositions of Walker and other NOWnet members, as well as commissions works by promising local and national performers with immense talents but limited exposure and recognition.
