Quarteto Mateo
Scott Mateo Davies, guitar
Nick Haas, guitar
Peter Susag, bass
Eron Woods, drums
Flamenco guitar master Scott Mateo Davies teams up with the acclaimed Nick Haas Trio for a night of Latin-flavored music!
Davies got his start playing in folk and pop circles before discovering classical guitar. He took to the style immediately, and in 1982 moved to Madrid to study flamenco guitar extensively, a pilgrimage he repeats each year for study and performance. For years he was the featured guitarist and oud player for Voices of Sepharad, a group that explores the music and dance of the Spanish Jewish diaspora.
Davies has been a featured guest at The Ensemble Español Spanish Dance Theater in Chicago since 1989, one of many guest appearances he makes with flamenco companies all over the country. In 2000 Davies co-created FUEGO Flamenco with Colette Marie Illarde, one of the leading flamenco dance companies in the region.
In addition to his regional solo work, Davies has also shared the stage with international music luminaries. He opened a concert for Spain’s most famous contemporary singer, Jose Mercé, at the Park West Theater in Chicago in February 2004. In July 2004 he played another four concerts accompanying dancer Manolete. He was featured guitarist in Theatre de la Jeune Lune’s Tony Award-winning production of Astor Piazzolla’s opera, “Maria de Buenos Aires,” and subsequently became a full-fledged member of the Mandragora Tango Orchestra.
The Nick Haas Trio is a modern jazz ensemble based in Minneapolis, Minnesota. With repertoire ranging from traditional standards to off-beat originals, this trio is just as comfortable entertaining in ballrooms as in bar rooms.
Nick Haas (guitar) holds a degree in performance from Hamline University and teaches at the St. Paul Conservatory of Music. When he is not playing in this trio, he can be found in one of his other groups (Say Lovey, Bankrupt in Panama).
Eron Woods (percussion) holds a degree in performance from the University of Miami. He spent several years as a house percussionist in the cruise ship industry before embarking on a career playing percussion for various circuses. Today he performs and instructs full time, both privately and through Cadenza Music in St. Paul. Other notable projects include The Dean Brewington Quintet, Exquisite Corps, The Overtones Jazz Trio and The Capri Big Band.
Peter Susag (double bass) can be heard throughout the Twin Cities playing genres ranging from classic jazz to salsa and tango. Besides his various small combo work (Scott Mateo Davies, Wes Ruelle, etc.), he can be heard in the rhythm section of The Capri Big Band (with Eron Woods) and backing any number of vocalists in the area.
