New Orleans Jazz & Heritage Series

The Dakota has always felt an affinity with New Orleans music and musicians. Perhaps it’s because of the river we occupy either end of.  We suspect it has a lot to do with the fact that The Crescent City is the birthplace of jazz: the embodiment of the “melting pot,” where European, African, Caribbean and other cultures met to create an entirely new, entirely American art form.  Artists like Louis Armstrong, Jelly Roll Morton, and Sidney Bechet had a hand in inventing the music; Professor Longhair, Fats Domino, and Dr. John added elements of blues and rock; today’s crop of New Orleanians include the Marsalis family, Terence Blanchard, Irvin Mayfield, The Neville Brothers, and too many more to name here.  Scarcely a month goes by when a New Orleans-based artist doesn’t appear at The Dakota.

New Orleans’ musical and cultural history was greatly jeopardized by Hurricane Katrina in 2005, and the recent oil spill is threatening not only the city of New Orleans but the entire ecosystem of the Gulf.

In addition to performing at our DakotaFest on Sat, July 17, Charmaine Neville and Glen David Andrews are both appearing here over the weekend to give us “the full experience.”  100% of the cover charge from these evenings will be donated to the Under the Radar Foundation, a local organization committed to providing for victims of recent calamities in the Gulf Coast and New Orleans area.  Additionally, proceeds from our Signature Drinks at upcoming New Orleans Jazz & Heritage Series shows will be donated to Under the Radar.  Additional donations to UTR will be accepted at The Dakota during these shows as well.
