Charles Neville, the jazziest of the legendary Neville Brothers, brings his sensuous, sinewy sax sound matched by a young singer he raves about for one of the bargain shows of the New Year. It’s a great way to chill out after New Year’s Eve or celebrate the New Year in a cooler way than the excitement of Dec 31. Charles made a major impression on our audiences when he played with his brother Aaron in early December, garnering a couple of standing ovations in the middle of Aaron’s shows.
His experience on saxophone has included rhythm & blues, funk, jazz, be-bop, popular and even American Indian music. He cites as influences Louis Jordan, Charlie Parker, John Coltrane, Sonny Rollins and Professor Longhair. He is also the only brother that lived away from New Orleans for long periods of time, making places like New York, Memphis and Oregon his home. Charles’s show is a journey of musical exploration of America’s greatest art form, jazz. He brings a New Orleans vibe to be-bop, bridging the gap between the music of New Orleans (where jazz was born and the Neville Brothers rose to national prominance) and the great music that flowed out of New York in the 1950′s.
