A world-class soloist, accomplished composer and formidable bandleader, saxophonist Chris Potter has emerged as a leading light of his generation. Down Beat called him “One of the most studied (and copied) saxophonists on the planet” while Jazz Times identified him as “a figure of international renown.” Jazz sax elder statesman Dave Liebman called him simply, “one of the best musicians around.”
A potent improviser and passionate composer, Potter’s impressive discography includes 15 albums as a leader and sideman appearances on over 100 albums. He has performed or recorded with many of the leading names in jazz, such as Herbie Hancock, John Scofield, the Mingus Big Band, Dave Douglas, Ray Brown and many others.
Potter’s résumé reveals that he has covered a lot of musical ground in a short time: as an 18-year-old, he joined bebop legend Red Rodney; he spent formative years in Paul Motian’s Electric Bebop band; he has played extensively with guitarist Jim Hall and prog-rockers Steely Dan. His work with iconic bassist Dave Holland and, more importantly, his many excellent recordings as bandleader, have raised his regard in the jazz community and established him as one of the most vital voices in improvised music.
Potter’s Quartet focuses his prodigious talent into an electric groove context, with David Virelles on piano, Joe Martin on bass, and Marcus Gilmore on drums. On display are Potter’s unique mixed-meter melodies and adventurous harmonic language, with one of the most exciting ensembles he has ever led.
