Doc Severinsen & His Big Band

Trumpet & Big Band Legend

Doc Severinsen is one of the most well-known trumpeters in the world. He has enjoyed a six-decade career as conductor, trumpet soloist and bandleader, well-known as the former music director of The Tonight Show Starring Johnny Carson, a position he held for more than 25 years. With a tone as colorful as the jackets he wears, Doc has enjoyed a productive “retirement:” recent years have seen him reprise his Pops Conductor roles with the Minnesota, Milwaukee and Phoenix Symphony Orchestras, tour the country with El Ritmo de la Vida, a stunning quartet of Mexican musicians, and develop a new line of trumpets with the S.E. Shires Company. 2012 brought us Doc’s first tour with his Big Band in over 5 years, “Once More With Feeling,” and he reprises that tour yet again!

With more than 30 albums to his credit, Severinsen has recorded and performed everything from big band and jazz-fusion to classical works. He received a 1997 Grammy Award for Best Instrumental Performance—Big Band for his recording Doc Severinsen and the Tonight Show Band—Volume I. He performed the world premiere of Stephen Paulus’ Concerto for Two Trumpets and Orchestra in 2003 with the Minnesota Orchestra, written for him and principal trumpet Manny Laureano.

Severinsen currently works with the S.E. Shires Company in Massachusetts, whose line of trumpets include the S.E. Shires Severinsen Destino III, a model developed through Doc’s supervision until his exacting standards of quality and sound were met.
