The Mack Avenue SuperBand is an all-star ensemble comprising many of the label’s most acclaimed artists. The SuperBand is a fiery, celebratory conglomeration, the sort of chemistry experiment whose success is predicated on its combustibility.
Christian McBride, bass
Bass virtuoso Christian McBride is one of the most important figures in jazz in the last 30 years, and figures prominently in the renewed interest in the music among young people. Since moving to New York in 1989, he has worked with the best of the best in the jazz, pop and rock worlds, and has led his own groups in the meantime. He has shared the stage with musical luminaries like McCoy Tyner, Sting, Kathleen Battle, and Diana Krall.
Gary Burton, vibraphone
Gary Burton is easily the most influential vibraphonist of his generation and is one of the most unique jazz artists to have emerged in the last 50 years. Getting his start with George Shearing and Stan Getz, Burton has been recording under his own name for over 40 years, resulting in 6 Grammy Awards and 15 Grammy nominations, and countless awards from esteemed jazz publications. Burton’s collaborations with Chick Corea rank among modern jazz’s most treasured recordings, and although he recently celebrated his 70th birthday, he continues to tour regularly with his quartet.
Sean Jones, trumpet
Sean Jones is one of the elite trumpeters of his generation. He came to national attention as the lead trumpeter with Wynton Marsalis’s Jazz at Lincoln Center Orchestra, a position he held for several years. Sean has recorded and/or performed with many major figures, including Illinois Jacquet, Jimmy Heath, Frank Foster, Nancy Wilson, Dianne Reeves, Gerald Wilson and Marcus Miller. Sean was selected by Miller, Herbie Hancock and Wayne Shorter for their Tribute to Miles tour in 2011.
Tia Fuller, saxophone
Tia Fuller is a driving force both as a saxophonist and as an educator. A professor at the Berklee School of Music, Fuller balances her teaching schedule with a full performing calendar. Fuller has been a member of Beyoncé’s band, and has performed with Esperanza Spalding’s Radio Music Society, Dianne Reeves, Teri Lynne Carrington, Chaka Khan, Janelle Monet, and others.
Christian Sands, piano
Christian Sands is an emerging jazz force. He possesses pianistic technique in abundance, and it perfectly matches his conception. His use of understatement accomplishes a much deeper musical goal. He takes a fresh look at the entire language of jazz: stride, swing, bebop, progressive, fusion, Brazilian and Afro-Cuban. He has shared the stage with Wynton Marsalis, Stefon Harris, Jason Moran, Geri Allen, Esperanza Spalding, Lou Donaldson, Avery Sharpe, James Moody, Terence Blanchard, and others.
Carl Allen, drums
With over 200 recordings to his credit, Carl Allen’s profound and propulsive percolations have provided soulful and syncopated support for nearly three decades. Allen came to prominence as Freddie Hubbard’s Musical Director in the 1980s, and since he has performed with Michael Brecker, Benny Golson, J.J. Johnson, Rickie Lee Jones, Sammy Davis Jr., Branford Marsalis, Kenny Garrett, Lena Horne, Wayne Shorter, Herbie Hancock, and many more.
