A Special Evening of Freeform Space Funk (featuring members of James Patrick Plays…)

JON Davis

A special evening of freeform space funk featuring members of James Patrick Plays... Christopher Cunningham (a.k.a. Neverwas) Neverwas (a.k.a. Christopher Cunningham) grew up amidst the rising noise floor of the hyperactive 1960’s and 70's American youth culture, and hit the ground running - directly into the maw of the early 1980’s No Wave and downtown punk funk scenes of both American coasts. His lead guitar gig with James Chance (James White) and The Contortions (Blacks) began a twenty-five year period of global wandering, involving a multitude of subsequent groupings, pairings, and breakups. Although NYC was always the homeland of insecurity, his collaborations on stages and in studios with the likes of Marianne Faithfull, John Lurie’s Lounge Lizards, Gavin Friday, Boukman Eksperyans, Omar Farouk Tekbilek, Katell Keineg, The Golden Paliminos, Marshall Crenshaw, Richie Havens, and The Saqqara Dogs kept the time zones and languages constantly changing outside the van/plane/train/taxi /limo window. DKO Known also as core members of improvising supergroup Coloring Time, as well as comprising the powerhouse rhythm section of funkified techno outfit James Patrick Plays, Jon Davis (bass & reeds), John Keston (keyboards & electronics) and Graham O'Brien (drums) are DKO. Having distinguished themselves with epic multimedia performances at Northern Spark Festival (Battle of Everyouth @ Minneapolis Institute of Art in 2011, Teleportation Platform X @ Union Depot in 2013) and Weisman Art Museum's WAM@20, the trio generates intricate, groove-driven compositions from scratch (often for hours at a time) with little or no discussion or planning (or breaks!). Each member of DKO has assimilated a variety of musical styles on their respective instruments, performing over the years with many well-known artists in the Twin Cities and elsewhere. Working together in the open water of spontaneous composition, however, these three are at their best. Whether plotting new courses over seas well-travelled, or plunging headlong into uncharted waters, DKO never forget to bring the deeply evolved grooves and sublime modalism that is their signature.

With two nights booked here right before her big gig with the Stones at the TCF Stadium, you never know what might happen or who might show up!

Band 2 feat. Tim Ries and Bernard Fowler

Band 2 feat. Tim Ries, Bernard Fowler

Jazz Meets Rock Classics

For this date, pianist Chuck Leavell will join Tim, along with Twin Cities ace players Kevin Washington on drums, Gary Raynor on bass, and Cory Wong on guitar. Chuck was in the Allman Brothers Band in the 1970's and has been a long time touring member of the Rolling Stones.

Steve Smith and Vital Information – NYC Edition

Steve Smith

Modern Drummer's 2015 #1 Fusion Drummer

KBEM Steve Smith (Hiromi/Journey) - drums Mark Soskin (Sonny Rollins/Herbie Mann) – keyboards Andy Fusco (Buddy Rich/Mel Lewis) - alto sax Vinny Valentino (Jimmy McGriff/Bill Evans) - guitar Baron Browne (Jean-Luc Ponty/Billy Cobham) – bass In a musical world where keeping a working band has proven difficult for many bandleaders,drummer-bandleader Steve Smith has managed to keep three bands working for the past three decades. His jazz-rock band, Steve Smith and Vital Information, has been touring and recording for more than 30 years, while his “straight-ahead” groups Steve Smith and Buddy’s Buddies, made up of Buddy Rich Alumni, and Steve Smith’s Jazz Legacy (a group dedicated to playing the music of some of great drumset masters such as Art Blakey, Elvin Jones and Tony Williams), have toured for five years and released two albums and a DVD. Therefore, it makes perfect sense for this prolific recording artist and bandleader, who has made a career out of amalgamating the many twists and turns of his musical calling, to blend all three bands for a 2015 studio album release entitled The Skyline Sessions on the BFM Jazz label. The updated version of his recording and touring ensemble is called STEVE SMITH AND VITAL INFORMATION - NYC EDITION. Smith refers to this new line-up as, “The best of all worlds. With my band-members all living and working in NYC area, where I live, this group can be organized in a moment’s notice. VI NYC Edition is a lot of fun to play with and is a high-energy, creative, jazz unit!” The lineup of Vital Information NYC Edition brings together members of all of his bands: saxophonist Andy Fusco (from Jazz Legacy and Buddy’s Buddies) guitarist Vinny Valentino (from Vital Information), pianist Mark Soskin (from Jazz Legacy and Buddy’s Buddies), bassist Baron Browne (from Jazz Legacy, Buddy’s Buddies and Vital Information), and Steve Smith on drums.
