Steve Smith Vital Information – NYC Edition

Steve Smith

Modern Drummer's 2015 #1 Fusion Drummer

KBEM Steve Smith (Hiromi/Journey) - drums Mark Soskin (Sonny Rollins/Herbie Mann) – keyboards Andy Fusco (Buddy Rich/Mel Lewis) - alto sax Vinny Valentino (Jimmy McGriff/Bill Evans) - guitar Baron Browne (Jean-Luc Ponty/Billy Cobham) – bass In a musical world where keeping a working band has proven difficult for many bandleaders,drummer-bandleader Steve Smith has managed to keep three bands working for the past three decades. His jazz-rock band, Steve Smith and Vital Information, has been touring and recording for more than 30 years, while his “straight-ahead” groups Steve Smith and Buddy’s Buddies, made up of Buddy Rich Alumni, and Steve Smith’s Jazz Legacy (a group dedicated to playing the music of some of great drumset masters such as Art Blakey, Elvin Jones and Tony Williams), have toured for five years and released two albums and a DVD. Therefore, it makes perfect sense for this prolific recording artist and bandleader, who has made a career out of amalgamating the many twists and turns of his musical calling, to blend all three bands for a 2015 studio album release entitled The Skyline Sessions on the BFM Jazz label. The updated version of his recording and touring ensemble is called STEVE SMITH AND VITAL INFORMATION - NYC EDITION. Smith refers to this new line-up as, “The best of all worlds. With my band-members all living and working in NYC area, where I live, this group can be organized in a moment’s notice. VI NYC Edition is a lot of fun to play with and is a high-energy, creative, jazz unit!” The lineup of Vital Information NYC Edition brings together members of all of his bands: saxophonist Andy Fusco (from Jazz Legacy and Buddy’s Buddies) guitarist Vinny Valentino (from Vital Information), pianist Mark Soskin (from Jazz Legacy and Buddy’s Buddies), bassist Baron Browne (from Jazz Legacy, Buddy’s Buddies and Vital Information), and Steve Smith on drums.

Steve Smith's drumming, while always decidedly modern, can best be described as a style that embodies the history of U.S....

David Garfield featuring Alex Ligertwood and Paul Peterson

David Garfield

Pop Jazz Keyboard Ace

David Garfield, keyboardist extraordinaire, has been a first call session and road musician since the early 1970s when he moved from St. Louis to Los Angeles. David currently is George Benson’s keyboardist and musical director. Garfield has also worked with Natalie Cole, Boz Scaggs, Cher, Spinal Tap, The Rippingtons, Ratt, Larry Carlton, and Smokey Robinson; produced for Oleta Adams and Flora Purim; and has performed live with Michael Bolton, The Blues Brothers, Brenda Russell and Rick Braun. Joining David will be Glasgow native Alex Ligertwood, former lead singer for Santana, Jeff Beck and Brian Auger. David and Alex have been working together all over the world, including the Java Jazz Festival in Jakarta, Indonesia. They blend pop and jazz with R&B and Latin for a truly unique musical presentation covering everything from sensitive ballads to foot-stomping soul classics. Their music goes beyond the confines of a traditional jazz or smooth jazz show. Their sets will include songs from the catalogs of such greats as Steely Dan, the Beatles, and Al Green as well as Santana. Also joining on bass and vocals is Paul Peterson, aka St Paul Peterson; a part of the Peterson Family, known as the First Family of Music in Minnesota. Paul first met David when they played together with the legendary Boz Scaggs. Jason Peterson DeLaire also belongs to that same family, and will be joining them on saxophone. Jason is currently on the road with Michael Bolton. Rounding out the band will be Petar Janjic on drums (Dr Mambo’s Combo, Acoustic Alchemy, Nachito Herrera).

David Garfield's mission statement is "I make music." And "make music" he does, as a world-renowned keyboard artist, producer,...
