Frisell revisits inspirations from his childhood with shows and an upcoming CD Guitar In The Space Age! “It’s really just a learning thing for me to go back to spend more time with that,” Frisell told the Leonard Lopate Show.
Tonight, guitarist Bill Frisell mines the catalog of the largely instrumental guitar-based music from the 1950s and 1960s that first inspired him to pick up the instrument. Joining Frisell for this evening of musical memories are the members from his working trio, bassist Tony Scherr and drummer Kenny Wollesen, along with frequent collaborator Greg Liesz, a master of lap and pedal steel guitars. This superb quartet will explore the music of jazz icon Charlie Christian, rock pioneers Chuck Berry, Duane Eddy, Link Wray and The Wrecking Crew, surf music legends Dick Dale, The Ventures and The Astronauts, and country music stars Chet Atkins, Speedy West, Jimmy Bryant and Merle Travis. This performance promises a rare look into Bill Frisell’s formative influences, from a time when the electric guitar was in its infancy and creating a startlingly new sound, pushing popular music into the future.
