About Charmin & Shapira w/Friends
“Taste and understatement. Swing and savoir-faire. Grace and grooves. Intimacy and panache. Singer Charmin Michelle delivers all of the above and more.”
This is what the Minneapolis Star/Tribune had to say about this charismatic chanteuse whose conversational style recalls Billie Holiday and other legendary ladies of jazz. And, yet, her music is free of tiresome camp and easy nostalgia. She’s a savvy songstress and, while putting her own imprint on a melody, is always respectful of those who first inhabited it.
Charmin Michelle, vocals
Joel Shapira, guitar
Paul Harper, saxophone
Tom Lewis, bass
Nathan Norman, drums
Born in Birmingham, Alabama, Charmin moved to Minnesota while still a child and has called it home ever since. Though based in Minneapolis, she is no stranger to life on the road and began touring internationally in 1986. She has performed at jazz festivals throughout Europe with pianists Mulgrew Miller and Kirk Lightsey, and saxophonists Harry Allen and Grant Stewart, among others. The late Brother Jack McDuff, one of her biggest fans, was instrumental in launching her career abroad. He said, “She’s really different. I call her ‘Chow Mein.’ With her trio, less is more. And they’re right in the pocket.”
On her last tour to Spain, she recorded with the aforementioned Allen and Stewart, as well as saxophonist Scott Hamilton, guitarist Peter Bernstein, and Barcelonan musicians Ignasi Terraza, and the Toni Sola Quartet.
Her four acclaimed CDs—Your Eyes, Destination Moon, Hot, and Pure Imagination—have received glowing reviews and are available at performances, retailers, and online

About Katia Cardenas
Katia Cardenas is a professional vocalist in the Twin Cities, recognized for her radiant energy, impeccable range, and dynamic yet powerful voice. She grew up in the Pacific Northwest in a musical family, and was raised on jazz, funk, and r&b. She moved to Sacramento, California in 2000, where she received a Waldorf education, which instilled in her a deep appreciation and passion for music. Katia came to the Twin Cities in 2006 to attend Macalester College, where she performed regularly in a cappella groups and other bands.
After graduating, music was just a side note for a few years. But about a year ago, she realized the significant lack of music in her life, and needed to make a change. She has since collaborated with numerous local musicians, exploring different musical styles, including jazz, latin, R&B, and pop. She has performed at numerous local venues, including Hell’s Kitchen, Jazz Central, Honey, Bedlam Lowertown, and St. Paul Saints Games at Midway Stadium. Katia is passionate about creating community around the arts and has engaged with numerous local artist networks including Face Forward: Humanity through Art, Twin Cities Cabaret Artists Network (TCCAN), and Jazz Central Studios. The people she’s met through the Twin Cities arts and music community in the last year are a huge part of where she is today; they are a constant inspiration, and reminder to pursue her dreams.
