About David Grisman
For nearly half a century, mandolinist / composer / bandleader / producer David Grisman has been a guiding force in the evolving world of acoustic music. His musical range is wide and deep — embracing many styles, genres and traditions.
An acoustic pioneer and innovator, David has forged a unique personal artistic path, skillfully combining elements of the great American music/art forms, jazz and bluegrass, with many international flavors and sensibilities to create his own distinctive idiom — “Dawg” music (the nickname given him by Jerry Garcia). In doing so, he’s inspired new generations of acoustic string musicians, while creating his own niche in contemporary music.
David Grisman first met and played with guitarist/vocalist extraordinaire Jim Hurst a decade ago at the “Bluegrass at the Beach” camp in Oregon. In 2011, David attended one of Jim’s remarkable solo performances in Sonoma County and was inspired to form this trio to explore some of their common roots in folk, country and jazz.
Jim Hurst’s unique picking style and mastery of bluegrass guitar wows audiences and is revered by both novice guitar players and his musical peers. His eclectic career has made him a remarkable performer, an experienced instructor and a highly sought after session musician. His affability and gregariousness make him one of the most approachable musicians of his caliber.
David and Jim will be joined by Sam Grisman on upright bass. Sam has been a full-time member of the David Grisman Bluegrass Experience since 2005.
Grisman came to prominence in the busy Greenwich Village folk revival in the early 1960s. His recording debut came in 1963 with the Even Dozen Jug Band, and produced several records as well. Always a musical journeyman, he joined his first bluegrass band in 1966, and formed his first jazz ensemble in 1967. His discography is filled with notables including Jerry Garcia, Stephane Grappelli, the Grateful Dead, John Hartford, Del McCoury, Bonnie Raitt, Linda Ronstadt, Earl Scruggs, James Taylor and Doc Watson. Grisman’s recordings have earned five Grammy awards.
