Born Andwele Gardner, multi-instrumentalist, producer and singer Dwele was raised on the west side of Detroit. A self professed devote of jazz and R&B, he was raised in a musical family and studied piano, trumpet, guitar and bass drawing from influences of Miles Davis, Stevie Wonder, Roy Ayers, Donny Hathaway and Freddie Hubbard before becoming a hip-hop MC, inspired by A Tribe Called Quest.
Recording and releasing his first works independently in Detroit, he started working with the hip-hop underground with artists Bahamadia, Lucy Pearl, Sector Movement. His debut album Subject was well received and led to tours world-wide, and more collaborations, including with his trombone-playing brother. His second effort Some Kinda brought him to another level of collaboration – it was produced by Jay Dilla and features Common and Slum Village. Winning a Grammy for his Earth Wind and Fire tribute cover of “That’s the Way of the World,” his 2010 project, W.ants W.orld W.omen was called spectacular by critics.
Dwele’s most recent fifth effort Greater Than One shows influences of Prince and Stevie Wonder, with instrumentation hearkening back to Shalamar and Rick James.
