Freddy Cole

About Freddy Cole

The younger brother of Nat King Cole and uncle of Natalie Cole, singer/pianist Freddy Cole sounds a great deal like his celebrated sibling, yet has a personality of his own. Cole, whose vocals tend to be a bit darker and slightly rougher, began playing piano at five or six. A masterful vocalist and pianist, Freddy Cole captivates listeners with his elegant presence, subtle phrasing, and intimate singing style.

Having a family member already in the limelight has its mixed blessings, especially when it’s Nat King Cole. For much of his career, Freddy was overshadowed by the larger-than-life persona and legendary career of his brother. He had to struggle to find his own niche in the jazz world. As a result, Freddy did not find wider acclaim until the 1990s. He is now recognized for what he is himself – one of the greatest song stylists in today’s jazz world.

“Once upon a time, it was nearly impossible to listen to Freddy Cole without being reminded of his elder brother. … More recently, as Freddy’s baritone has become raspier, the ghost of Nat has grown continuously faint. Indeed, throughout this gorgeously supple set, captured two years ago at Dizzy’s Club Coca-Cola in Lincoln Center, Freddy is entirely freed of fraternal echoes. A priceless quality of Nat’s does, however, remain.” – Christopher Loudon, Jazz Times, May 2009

What Other People Have Been Saying...

“Freddy has an impeccable sense of swing… he is, overall, the most maturely expressive male jazz singer of his generation, if not the best alive.” – New York Times

“Freddy Cole will open the door to your heart with a key that you did not even know existed.” – Ruth Brown
