About Junior Brown

Country crooner and hybrid guitarist Junior Brown seamlessly melds the honky tonk of good ol’ country music with the spirit of rock n’ roll. Born in Indiana in 1952, Brown’s musical beginnings span back to when his father taught him to play the piano before he could even talk. His career took off in the 1960s while he played with various country groups, including The Last Mile Ramblers and Asleep at the Wheel. It was during this period that he began to hone his extraordinary flair with the guitar.

In 1985, Brown invented the instrument that would become the pedestal from which he would find his success: the guit-steel. Brown had a fondness for both steel and electric guitars, but felt it was awkward to switch between the two while he sang during live performances. Thus the guit-steel was born. The guit-steel is a hybrid double-neck guitar: the top neck is a full, 6- string electric guitar and the bottom neck is a full steel lap guitar.

Brown’s success spread across his current hometown of Austin, Texas and then to the rest of the country. He debuted his first album, 50 Shades of Brown, in 1990 and has since released eight other recordings, three of which charted in the US. He has been honored by Life Magazine as the only contemporary member of their “All Time Country Band” and was named #1 Lap Steel Guitarist by Guitar Player Magazine in 1994, as well as #2 Country Artist and #3 Country Album (1993′s Guit With It).
He is currently touring with his wife and rhythm guitarist, Tanya Raye Brown, bringing the country twang of his one-of-a-kind instrument to venues across the country.

What Other People Have Been Saying...

“No country artist has opened, or cleaned out, more ears than Junior Brown has with his trusty guit-steel, which can take the stuffing out of a standard arrangement with the crazed authority of a buzzsaw on the loose in a pillow factory.” - No Depression

“He simply let his fingers do the flying.” - New York Times
