Will I Ever See You Again?
Venus And The Sky Turns To Clay
John Cruz Media
Born and raised in Hawai’i, Makana is an internationally acclaimed slack key guitarist, singer, composer, philosopher, activist and one of Hawaii’s cultural ambassadors to the world. He is considered the youngest authority on his art form and recognized as one of the top guitarists in the US (Guitar Player Magazine 2008). The NY Times calls him “A dynamic force within the style” of slack key and National Geographic Society says Makana is “charting a new sonic frontier with deep ties to tradition”.
His songs range from traditional to highly original, both instrumental and lyrical, exploring a broad spectrum of themes: cultural, philosophical, social-political, economic, inter-personal, sensual, and universal, often through the lens of humor and a piercing wit. He has performed in venues worldwide ranging from Tianjin Opera House in China to The White House, toured nationwide with Jason Mraz, opened for Sting, Santana & Elvis Costello, and released 6 records to date.
About John Cruz
From the time he was a young boy growing up in Palolo Valley on Oahu, John Cruz knew he was destined to play music. Whether inside or outside the home, his earliest memories were filled with song. Although John grew up in Hawaii, it wasn’t until he moved to the East Coast in 1983 that he developed his own style as a singer songwriter. During his 12 years in the Northeast, John cut his musical teeth in subways, coffeehouses and bars in New York’s Greenwich Village, as well as in the clubs and local haunts from Martha’s Vineyard to the Boston area.
John’s 1996 debut recording, Acoustic Soul, to date has sold over 150,000 copies in Hawaii alone. It spawned the radio hits “Shine On,” “Sitting in Limbo” and “Island Style,” which has become a local anthem known around the world. Acoustic Soul won two Na Hoku Hanohano Awards in 1997 — one for Contemporary Album of the Year and one for Most Promising Artist.
In 2005, John added the Grammy Award to his list of honors. His original song “Jo Bo’s Night” was featured on the compilation CD Slack Key Guitar Volume 2, which won the first Grammy ever awarded for Hawaiian music. Over the years, John has attracted some stellar fans. Stars like Jack Johnson, Jackson Browne, Eddie Vedder, Jimmy Buffett, Lisa Loeb, Trey Anastasio and others, have shown their support in various ways.
