About fDeluxe (aka The Family)
Minneapolis funk outfit, fDeluxe (aka The Family), will return to the stage with two shows at The Dakota on January 31, 2018.
Formed in the wake of success of Prince’s smash hit film “Purple Rain” The Family featured three former members of his Royal Badness’ nemesis The Time (Jellybean Johnson, Jerome Benton and “St Paul” Peterson) along with sax player Eric Leeds and Susannah Melvoin, twin sister of Revolution guitarist Wendy. Their debut, self-titled set (released on Prince’s Paisley Park label) is possibly one of the greatest funk albums of the 80s, and remains to this day an often-overlooked treasure. Described as the “missing link between the psychedelic sounds of “Around The World In A Day’ and the horn-infused funk of “Parade”, The Family has been cited as an all-time favorite by artists such as Dam-Funk, Questlove, Chris Rock, Erykah Badu and D’Angelo to name but a few.
In 2010 the band reunited (minus Benton) as fDeluxe and have released the critically acclaimed studio albums “Gaslight” and “AM Static”, along with a blistering concert set “Live & Tight As A Funk Fiend’s Fix”. They have performed sold out shows in Australia, Japan, England, Paris, Brussels and Holland as well as in their native USA. Their performance at an All-Star tribute to Prince (D’Angelo, Chris Rock, Elvis Costello and more) at Carnegie Hall in 2013 saw Billboard proclaim, “the show reached its funkiest echelon when fDeluxe came out to perform with the Roots,” while the Village Voice described it as “a dominant appearance by fDeluxe whose high energy funk set was otherwise a master class in bass-driven grooves.”
Since the release of their moving tribute to Prince (a remake of their 1985 cut “Nothing Compares 2 U” – watch here. The band has taken a break while various members have pursued other interests – Leeds/Peterson have been working on their debut, jazz fusion album as a duo; Johnson has been touring with The Time (including performances with Bruno Mars and Rihanna) and Melvoin working on a children’s storybook based on her song ‘Starfish & Coffee’.
With the Super Bowl and football fans from around the world descending on the Twin Cities, the band is excited to once again showcase their unique sound at one of the city’s most beloved venues.
“It’s an honor to play with fDeluxe during this historic time in Minneapolis. We are proud to be considered one of the bands that helped form the Minneapolis Sound.”
St Paul Peterson.
What Other People Have Been Saying...
“…both a continuation of the Family and a journey in new directions. In other words, it’s got plenty of sanctified funk, dreamy pop, soulful duets and jazzy saxophone.” -Star Tribune
