Prudence Johnson and Dan Chouinard: A Night of Gershwin

About Prudence Johnson and Dan Chouinard: A Night of Gershwin

Prudence Johnson’s long and happy career as a singer, writer, and teacher has landed her on the musical theatre stage, in two feature films (A River Runs Through It, A Prairie Home Companion), national radio (several long stints on A Prairie Home Companion), and on concert stages across North America and occasionally Europe. She has released more than a dozen recordings, including albums dedicated to the music of Hoagy Carmichael, Greg Brown, and a collection of international lullabies.

In recent years, her focus has been on creating multi-media works for concert and theater stages that blend performance with her interests in history and literature. A play about a little-known collaborator of Kurt Weill and Bertolt Brecht in Berlin between the wars, first produced in 2003, is being rewritten under a new title. In 2011, she created and produced the touring show and CD A Girl Named Vincent, featuring the poetry of Edna St Vincent Millay set to music by four MN composers.

Pianist, accordionist and storyteller Dan Chouinard plays, tours and records with an ever-expanding roster of musicians and writers. He regularly creates special programs which blend storytelling, interview and music, many of these for Minnesota Public Radio and the MN Historical Society. Recent shows “Civil War Homecoming” (2015) “Cafe Europa” (2014, 2008, 2005) and “Mambo Italiano” (2006) have been aired on Twin Cities public televison, and broadcast statewide on MPR as have his frequent radio collaborations with Ann Reed, Peter Ostroushko and Patricia Hampl. He also works occasionally on “A Prairie Home Companion” with Garrison Keillor.

Tonight, Dan and Prudence celebrate the release of GERSHWIN, which includes new recordings as well as tracks previously released in 2003. Together they have written and toured four multi-meida music/history shows: Flappers, Miners & Moonshiners, The Golden Age of Radio, Tiptoe Through the 60s: Songs and Stories from a Revolutionary Decade, and Another Song About Paris.

What Other People Have Been Saying...

“Johnson’s voice, itself a finely tuned instrument… it’s clear, resonant, and expressive” – Bebopified

“These jazz (and) blues-tinged songs sit perfectly on Johnson’s voice of liquid gold….The musical values are first-rate.”
