About Rio Nido
Rio Nido is a vocal jazz trio that explores and redefines the genre with a distinctive blend of musicality, intellect & humor.
The group began in the late 1970s, when chanteuse Prudence Johnson joined forces with ace guitarists and singers Tim Sparks and Tom Lieberman. The Minneapolis-based group’s debut LP, “I Like to Riff,” is considered by many to be a classic of the vocal jazz genre, featuring reinterpretations of the acrobatic vocal arrangements of such fabled harmonists as The Boswell Sisters, The Cats and the Fiddle, and Lambert, Hendricks and Ross.
After Lieberman’s departure in the early 1980s, the group added singer/drummer Roger Hernandez, and singer/bassist Dave Maslow, and reconfigured as a quartet, recording 2 more titles, Hi-Fly and Voicings, before disbanding in 1987. The group’s original three members reunited in 2015, and have continued to mine the classic vocal jazz genre, while discovering “new classics” as well as original material that evokes the magic and timelessness of their previous repertoire.
Today, each member of Rio Nido is an established artist in their own right, and together, they comprise a brilliant chemistry that continues to create music that is entirely unique, idiosyncratic and beautiful.
