Dakota Late Night

what they say

Geoff Senn, trumpet
Shilad Sen, saxophones
Stefan Kac, tuba

This six piece band, with a trumpet-tenor sax-tuba front line, offers exciting and imaginative original music.

Zacc Harris, guitar
Bryan Nichols, piano
Chris Bates, bass
J.T. Bates, drums

Guitarist Zacc Harris is gaining a reputation as one of the hardest working guitarists in town. He has been presenting his original music in a number of different ensembles, each one striking and unique: the multi-meter melodies of the Atlantis Quartet, bebop sounds or classic organ groove music with CounterClockWise or Vital Organ, a six-piece Thelonious Monk tribute a la Paul Motian’s Electric Bebop Band Monk in Motian, and more. This brand new group takes Harris’s music to a new level, each member bringing certifiably heavy credentials to the band.

Catch these young phenoms while they are in town! After two years of playing trumpet in The Dakota Combo, trumpeter Baldwin has moved on to studies at the New England Conservatory. He will be joined by former classmates of his who are all home from music school, including 2008 Schubert Club/Dakota Foundation Piano Competition winner Joe Strachan.

Young trumpeter John Raymond is well on his way to becoming a major force in the music industry. Having recently received a Bachelor’s degree in Trumpet Performance at the University of Wisconsin-Eau Claire, John has been active as a performer, composer, arranger and educator in the Twin Cities area. He is the primary arranger for the Twin Cities Horns, who have recorded and performed with Ann Nesby, Desdamona, Nachito Herrera, and many more regional artists. John took fourth place in the jazz category of the 2008 National Trumpet Competition, and is currently attending graduate school in New York.

Tonight, John presents his original music in a traditional jazz setting, with some standards thrown in as well. This is a great time to hear this rising young star.

Eclectic modern blues from these veterans on the scene.

One of the most musically compelling local bands to emerge in recent years, City on the Make exists at a musical intersection of rock, hip-hop, funk, jazz, and blues, with enough spit and vinegar to go around.

Twin cities based Atlantis Quartet has combined youth and experience to forge a tremendous, unique, and original group sound in the modern jazz idiom. The compositions range in style from multi-meter grooves to complex harmonic explorations; from fusionistic rhythms to free and timeless tone poems, all filled with world class improvisation that is both organic and volatile. Clive Griffin of Jazz Improv Magazine describes the band as “Highly skilled musicians who have invested themselves heavily to develop their individual approaches…together, they sound genuinely inspired.” The group features four of Minnesota’s most exciting musicians, Brandon Wozniak (saxophone), Zacc Harris (guitar), Pete Hennig (drums), and Chris Bates (bass).
