Review: Karrin Allyson - Imagina: Songs Of Brasil
Over
the last decade or so, there are very few - if any -
female jazz vocalists who can match Karrin Allyson's
steady climb as a fan favorite. The Grammy-nominated
singer has become a regular on the album charts, and
has also become an audience favorite in live appearances
at a number of locations, including Carnegie Hall.
Along the way she's become a mainstay of the Concord stable
of artists, and has now issued her eleventh album for the
label, Imagina, Songs Of Brasil. Although it's her first
album comprised entirely of Brazilian music, she has featured
the genre in her live performances, and her 1999 album, From
Paris To Rio, spotlighted her singing in both French and
Portuguese.
On her new release, she gives us an entirely new collection
of 14 tracks, all performed in either just the original Portuguese,
or both Portuguese and English.
There
isn't a bad listen on the album.

"O Pato" - Karrin Allyson
Here are some comments
and reviews of this remarkable artist.
A
two-time Grammy nominee, her presentations encompass all
genres, from very expressive ballads to upbeat bossa novas,
from pop to blues. With an instinct for knowing when to
whisper and when to shout, when to scat and when to croon,
Allysons voice has a natural magnetism that combines honesty
of expression with a touch of impudence.
“
As a singer, I feel very influenced by instrumentalists
and by many classic instrumental songs,” says Karrin
Allyson. “It’s tricky to put lyrics to the great,
iconic tunes, because you want to do them justice.” For
Footprints, her tenth Concord release, GRAMMY® nominated
jazz vocalist Allyson made a bold step to do exactly that,
however.
Joined by vocalese pioneer Jon Hendricks, by Oregon-based
singer Nancy King, revered by jazz connoisseurs, and by signifying
tenor saxophonist-flutist Frank Wess, of Count Basie fame,
the always adventurous Allyson solidifies her position as one
of the most talented and best selling vocalist working today,
doing full justice to 13 classic instrumental tracks from the ‘50s
and ‘60s, all marked by strong melodies, meaty harmonic
progressions, and evocative, well-wrought lyrics, eight newly
penned by lyricist Chris Caswell
“ One
of the most charismatic figures on tour today.” - New York Times
“Allyson
knows what jazz singing is all about...sometimes tender,
sometimes tough, (she) always strikes the right chord.” - Associated Press
“The stuff that shivers are made of, both innocent, sexy and world
weary.” - Washington Post
“Name
your singing style and there's a pretty good chance that
Karrin Allyson can handle it, and handle it well.” - Los Angeles Times
