Jake Shimabukuro

Renowned for lightning-fast fingers and revolutionary playing techniques, Jake views the ukulele as an “untapped source of music with unlimited potential.” His virtuosity defies label or category. Playing jazz, blues, funk, classical, bluegrass, folk, flamenco, and rock, Jake’s mission is to show everyone that the ukulele is capable of so much more than only the traditional Hawaiian music many associate it. Evolving from the heavily amplified riffs that earned Jake the reputation as “Jimi Hendrix of the ukulele,” now Jake masterfully extracts the pure “clean” natural acoustic sound of the uke, delicately making a single note smile or cry on his new solo album Gently Weeps.

Tues-Wed, April 29-30

Karrin Allyson

Karrin Allyson is one of the most versatile and exciting performers on the scene today. Her body of work ranges from ballads, blues, and bebop to Brazilian songs, French chansons and the Great American Songbook. Her extremely personal style and the top-notch musicianship of her collaborating players together produce performances that always leave audiences wanting more.

Sunday, May 4

“Band of Gold” Hitmaker in a Tribute to Ella Fitzgerald

“ Band of Gold” put her on the charts, but
her first professional jobs were with Pearl
Bailey, Lionel Hampton, Sammy Davis Jr.
and Quincy Jones.

“ Not many jazz singers can deliver scat
improvisations with the velocity and
timbral control that Fitzgerald wielded.
Ms. Payne can not only do it, but the
voice she adopts for the task is strongly
reminiscent of Fitzgerald’s” - New York
Times, 2008.
Freda Payne

(another) extraordinary night at the Dakota - Monday, May 5

James Galway with Tiempo Libre

This will be a special impromptu pre-recording taste of an exciting new recording project.

Grammy-nominated Tiempo Libre is one the hottest young Latin bands today. Equally at home in concert halls, jazz clubs and dance venues, the Miami-based band has become known for their incendiary, joyful performances of timba - an irresistible, dance-inducing mix of high-voltage Latin jazz and the seductive rhythms of son - true modern heirs to the rich tradition of the music of their native Cuba.
The great classical flute legend, Sir James Galway (who, by the way, has the band’s "Lo Que Esperabas and "Arroz con Mango" on his iPod), has invited members of Tiempo Libre to collaborate with him on the first album to be put out under his new contract with SONY BMG. Called "O'Reilly Street" - after the famous street in Havana Vieja named after an Irish General - the album will combine the unparalleled musicianship, virtuosity and sound of "The Man with the Golden Flute" with Tiempo Libre's hot Cuban sounds and seductive rhythms. Look for the release of the new album this coming September.
Sir James Galway is regarded as both the supreme interpreter of the classical flute repertoire and a consummate entertainer whose appeal crosses all musical boundaries.
As one of the most televised and recorded classical artists performing today, Sir James has made himself a legend, a modern musical master whose virtuosity on the flute is equaled only by his limitless ambitions and vision. Through his extensive touring, over 30 million albums sold and his frequent international television appearances, Sir James has endeared himself to millions worldwide. As an instructor and humanitarian, Sir James is a tireless promoter of the arts.

Tickets will be available to the general public on Monday, April 28.
