“one of the greatest trumpeters alive” – AllMusic
Since its inception, the JazzMN Orchestra has presented over eighty concerts in its main series and many additional performances at festivals around the Twin Cities. The music performed by the JazzMN Orchestra spans from the beginnings of jazz to contemporary works by today’s composers. Now in its twenty-fifth season, the JazzMN Orchestra has featured international jazz artists like Randy Brecker, Kurt Elling, Mike Stern, Arturo Sandoval, Gordon Goodwin, Phil Woods, Nicholas Payton and Paquito D’Rivera.
Arturo Sandoval, a protégé of the legendary Dizzy Gillespie, was born near Havana, Cuba, in 1949. Two years before his birth, Gillespie introduced Latin influences into American jazz. Arturo began studying classical trumpet at twelve and soon caught the excitement of jazz.
With dazzling technique and near-limitless range, he has become one of the world’s top jazz trumpet and flugelhorn players. He is also a renowned classical artist, pianist and composer. Sandoval is one of the most dynamic live performers, seen by millions at the Oscars, the Grammy Awards and the Billboard Awards.
Arturo can be heard on recordings from Dizzy Gillespie, Woody Herman, Woody Shaw, Michel Legrand, Josh Groban, and Tony Bennett. He has performed with Stan Getz, Johnny Mathis, Frank Sinatra, Paul Anka, Rod Stewart and Alicia Keys. Additionally, he has played with John Williams and the Boston Pops and at the Super Bowl with Tony Bennett and Patti LaBelle.
Recommended for Fans of Wynton Marsalis, Dizzy Gillespie, Miles Davis and Chris Botti.
