SUMMARY:Turn Turn Turn
DESCRIPTION:“Gorgeous harmonies and beautiful finger-picking” – Americana UK\n  \nTurn Turn Turn bonded over their mutual love of close harmony 60s and 70s country\, folk\, and pop music. Then\, they formed an original Americana band. To create their distinctive sound\, the band “turns” to the distant past of early American recorded music. Then\, they “turn” again to that renaissance of the 1960s and 1970s. Finally\, they “turn” again to the present looking forward.  \nMembers Adam Levy (guitar\, vocals) and Barb Brynstad (bass\, vocals) are mainstays of the Minnesota music scene. Together\, they craft an infectious\, pop-infused Americana. Even though Turn Turn Turn was born as a cover band\, the group’s original material – sweetheart alt-country folk-pop – quickly stole the spotlight. Here\, their Laurel Canyon meets 70s-Nashville-cosmic soul vibe is layered with three-part harmonies that stitch the band’s musical tapestry together. \nAdam Levy is a veteran of the Minnesota rock scene\, best known for leading up the alt-rock band The Honeydogs. As a prolific songwriter and producer\, he has worked across many genres and performed worldwide. Joe Henry called Levy’s solo album Naubinway “love in action. A courageous and generous offering\, where ghosts abound\, facing the quiet inevitable that forever walks with us. It’s a record with soul and deep compassion. It is a beautiful and remarkable piece of work.” \nBarb Brynstad is an in-demand musician with decades-long roots in the Twin Cities music community. As a singer\, bassist\, and guitarist\, she has performed with various musicians\, including Chastity Brown (folk/Americana). Also\, Tina Schlieske (pop/rock)\, Willie Wisely (pop/rock)\, and the late great Willie Murphy (blues/soul). \nRecommended for fans of Tina Schlieske\, Eilen Jewell\, The Cactus Blossoms and Margo Price. \n📸: Cobey Rouse

SUMMARY:Leo Kottke: Live at The Ordway
DESCRIPTION:“wild\, highly technical blend of bluegrass\, folk\, and jazz and classical” – Rolling Stone\n  \nProlific guitarist Leo Kottke boasts an impressive body of work and an unrivaled fingerpicking style. His forty-plus albums over four decades have earned him two Grammy nominations and widespread acclaim. Drawing inspiration from folk\, blues and jazz\, he plays his signature six-string and twelve-string guitars with effortless aptitude\, a big heart and an even bigger grin.  \nKottke was born in Athens\, Georgia\, but left town after a year and a half. Raised in twelve different states\, he absorbed a variety of musical influences as a child. There\, he flirted with both violin and trombone\, before abandoning Stravinsky for the guitar at age eleven. \nHe added a love for the country blues of Mississippi John Hurt to the music of John Philip Sousa and Preston Epps. Then\, Kottke joined the Navy underage\, to be underwater\, and eventually lost some hearing shooting at lightbulbs in the Atlantic. He served on the USS Halfbeak\, a diesel submarine. \nDischarged in 1964\, he settled in the Twin Cities area and became a fixture at Minneapolis’ Scholar Coffeehouse. Further\, this venue had been home to Bob Dylan and John Koerner. \nKottke has been awarded two Grammy nominations. Also\, a Doctorate in Music Performance by the Peck School of Music at the U of Wisconsin\, Milwaukee. He also received a Certificate of Significant Achievement in Not Playing the Trombone from the U of Texas at Brownsville with Texas Southmost College. \nRecommended for fans of John Fahey\, Ry Cooder\, Michael Hedges and Peter Lang.

SUMMARY:Mike Cooley (of Drive-By Truckers)
DESCRIPTION:“Cooley sounds as sharp and wise as a Georgia country judge” – Rolling Stone\n  \nMike Cooley is an American guitarist\, singer\, and songwriter. He is best known as a member of the Southern rock band Drive-By Truckers. There\, the Alabama musical style blends elements of rock\, country\, and Americana. Additionally\, he is recognized for his sharp\, evocative lyrics and distinctive guitar work. As one of the band’s primary songwriters\, Cooley has written numerous iconic tracks for Drive-By Truckers. Further\, his songs often explore themes of personal introspection\, Southern identity\, and social commentary. Alongside bandmate Patterson Hood\, Cooley has been a driving force behind the band’s evolution since their late 1990s formation. Here\, he contributes to their gritty\, honest sound and critical success. \nIn addition to his work with the band\, Cooley has pursued a solo career. To that end\, he released his debut solo album The Fool on Every Corner in December 2012. The album showcases his storytelling prowess and ability to create poignant\, introspective songs with a more stripped-down\, intimate sound. Thus\, the album represents a rawer sound compared to his work with Drive-By Truckers. Known for his wit and keen observational style\, Cooley’s solo work highlights his versatility as an artist. Here\, he has cemented his place as an influential figure in contemporary American roots music. \nRecommended for fans of Jason Isbell\, Son Volt\, Amanda Shires and St. Paul & The Broken Bones.

SUMMARY:Asleep At the Wheel
DESCRIPTION:“scruffy but sincere traditionalists” – AllMusic\n  \nAsleep at the Wheel’s Ray Benson has been traversing the globe for over fifty years. He is an ambassador of Western swing music\, introducing its irresistible sound to generation after generation. More than 100 musicians have passed through the Wheel\, but Benson remains the front man and the keeper of the vision. in the process racking up more than thirty albums\, ten Grammy awards and literally millions of miles on the road.  \n“I’m the reason it’s still together\, but the reason it’s popular is because we’ve had the greatest singers and players\,” Benson explains. “When someone joins the band\, I say\, ‘Learn everything that’s ever been done\, then put your own stamp on it.’ I love to hear how they interpret what we do. I’m just a singer and a songwriter\, and a pretty good guitar player\, but my best talent is convincing people to jump on board and play this music.” \nAsleep at the Wheel represents an important cornerstone of American roots music. They maintain this even though some of its members and audiences represent a new generation. That far-reaching appeal remains a testament to Benson’s initial vision. \n“It took me sixty years\, but I’m doing what I’m meant to do—singing and playing and writing better than I ever have. A bandleader is just someone who gathers people around them to play the best music they can play. I just try and make the best decisions possible and kick some ass every night onstage.” \nRecommended for fans of Bob Wills & the Texas Playboys\, Kris Kristofferson\, Lyle Lovett and Ernest Tubb. \n📸: Andrew Dalton
