SUMMARY:DakhaBrakha
DESCRIPTION:There will be no dinner service during this show. Dinner service will end at 7:30PM. \n  \n“Visually striking and sonically mesmerizing.” – Broadway World\n  \nDakhaBrakha is a music quartet from Kyiv\, Ukraine. Their “ethno chaos” sound spans years of performances prior to Russia’s 2022 invasion\, but war is in everything now. Here\, they masterfully blend Ukrainian traditional music with influences from around the world\, resulting in an unexpected new music. \nTraditional music has seen a resurgence in Ukraine over the past decades\, after being suppressed during Soviet rule. DakhaBrakha uses Ukrainian polyphony as its foundation\, interweaving complex rhythmic and melodic structures from India\, Arabia\, Africa\, and Australia. Their music is textural\, layered sounds with distinctive percussive heartbeats\, thumping bass lines\, distorted electric guitars and influences of jazz\, spoken word\, rap and even punk. DakhaBrakha calls this tapestry of influences “ethno chaos.” And this chaos is a strength\, allowing them to draw in strands of music that connect Ukraine with the world. \nThey are troubadours\, activists and educators. Though their name means Give/Take in the old language\, DakhaBrakha is new Ukraine\, both pre-colonial and post-Soviet. Moreover\, they work within a global network of art and music. They aim to help audiences see Ukraine not as a monolith\, but as a cosmopolitan culture. Furthermore\, one that takes in other cultures\, and gives in return.  \nDakhaBrakha was created in 2004 at the Kyiv Center of Contemporary Art “DAKH” by the avant-garde theatre director Vladyslav Troitskyi. Theatre work has left its mark on the band performances – their shows are always staged with a strong visual element. Projected behind them are a mix of animations from different Ukrainian artists and photos of life in today’s Ukraine.  \nThe band is currently in the process of recording their first album since 2020 in Kyiv (Ukraine)\, which combines material created before and during Russia’s full-scale invasion of Ukraine. \nRecommended for fans of Dakh Daughters\, Yagódy\, Alyona Alyona and Onuka.

SUMMARY:Alfredo Rodriguez & Pedrito Martinez
DESCRIPTION:“Alfredo\, one of the greatest piano players of all time!” – Quincy Jones\n  \n“[Martinez is] an incomparable performer… a traditional Afro-Cuban music superstar” – New York Times\n  \nPainted in the broadest of strokes\, the stories of Alfredo Rodriguez and Pedrito Martinez may seem similar. Both started life in Havana\, discovered their gifts and passions for music and headed to the United States. There\, they melded the music of their homeland with a wide variety of influences\, each in their own deeply personal way. \nRodriguez was born into a musical family\, his father a popular singer and TV host. Martinez\, on the other hand\, honed his craft on the streets of Havana\, learning the deeply rooted percussion and vocal style of Afro-Cuban folkloric and religious music. \n“What makes this duo completely different is that I came from the folkloric side and Alfredo came from the classical side. You put those things together and you come out with an extraordinary and different sound.” – Pedrito Martinez \nPianist Alfredo Rodriguez’s sound embodies the collective sound of Miami\, blending Latin pop\, timba\, salsa\, bachata\, tango\, reggaeton\, and bolero. It’s a musical fusion that encompasses the diverse Latin community while celebrating individuality and fostering unity. It calls upon Rodriguez’s roots just as much as his newly learned experiences\, representing a new phase of life.  \nPedrito Martinez is a consummate master of Afro-Cuban folkloric music and the batá drum. Since settling in New York in 1998\, Pedrito has recorded or performed with Paul Simon\, Wynton Marsalis\, and Paquito D’Rivera. He has also worked with Bruce Springsteen\, Ruben Blades\, Eddie Palmieri\, Dave Matthews\, and Sting. Moreover\, he has contributed to over seventy-five albums. \nFurthermore\, he is also the world’s first-call rumbero—playing\, singing\, and dancing with dozens of Cuban rumba groups. Pedrito was a founding member of the highly successful Afro-Cuban/Afro-Beat band Yerba Buena. \nRecommended for fans of Poncho Sanchez\, Chucho Valdés\, Afro-Cuban All Stars and Eddie Palmieri. \n📸: Anna Webber
