SUMMARY:LIVESTREAM: New Year's Eve w/Davina and The Vagabonds
DESCRIPTION:“Davina and the Vagabonds combat heartache with sugar and sass.” – Downbeat\n  \nDavina Sowers and the Vagabonds have created a stir on the national music scene. Their high-energy live shows feature level-A musicianship\, sharp-dressed professionalism and Sowers’ commanding stage presence. Also\, their influences range from Fats Domino and the Preservation Hall Jazz Band to Aretha Franklin and Tom Waits. Moreover\, the band is converting audiences one show at a time\, from Vancouver to Miami and across Europe. \nMuch like the music\, the story spurns era\, expectation and classification. The often unbelievable\, sometimes harrowing\, and wholly inspiring journey of Davina Sowers gave birth to her eponymous band in 2004. As the tale goes\, she grew up in the economically depressed Allegheny town of Altoona\, PA. She now describes the town as “awesome in the industrial era\, but horrible for high school.” Then\, she was adopted by her stepfather when he was in his 80s; he passed when she was just 13. Through him and his Edison phonograph\, she first heard the music that would start her journey. For example\, The Ink Spots\, Sidney Bechet\, Louis Armstrong\, Louis Prima\, Sister Rosetta Tharpe and many others. “Great man. He was my angel and still is\,” she says. \nOn her own\, she vividly recalls hours in front of the record player at home. There\, she religiously spun Led Zeppelin\, Black Sabbath and Simon and Garfunkel records belonging to her folk singer mom. \nTo this day\, Davina still refers to music as “my first and eternal love.” Despite early dalliances with classical piano and guitar\, she developed a heavy drug habit in high school. Further\, this morphed into heroin dependency\, left her homeless\, sent her in and out of jail and brought on all manner of trouble. Kicking dope on the streets\, she “got clean\, started the band and worked [her] ass off every day since.” \nRecommended for fans of Pokey LaFarge\, Preservation Hall Jazz Band\, The Hot Sardines and Squirrel Nut Zippers.

SUMMARY:A Swingin’ Christmas w/ the Andrew Walesch Big Band
DESCRIPTION:“Fresh and classic at the same time” – Star Tribune\n  \nThere’s no better place to be right before Christmas than at Dakota with Andrew Walesch and his eighteen-piece big band. Ring in the holidays with the songs of Bennett\, Sinatra\, Bublé\, Basie\, and more! \nLike a good many before him\, singer and pianist Andrew Walesch manages to encapsulate the sophistication of a cosmopolite and the self-effacing charm of a country boy. Leading his all-star big band\, showman Andrew Walesch kidnaps the Blue Eyes tradition and makes it his own in his jazz-bent Sinatra revue. Thus\, Walesch is a traditionalist and an iconoclast rolled into one. \nWhether composing and arranging or appearing in settings ranging from solo artist to big band\, this St. Cloud\, MN native is as respectful of his predecessors as he is ready to take a leap into the unknown and chart a new course. Additionally\, Andrew routinely jams venues all over the Midwest and beyond with a uniquely cross-generational audience. Walesch’s fans include jazz enthusiasts of a certain age\, as well as a younger crowd compelled by his down-home insouciance. Here\, all are drawn in by the knowing irreverence of a tried-and-true American nightclub entertainer.  \n“Although they are my idols\, I don’t attempt to imitate the great pop and jazz artists of the 50s and ’60s\,” says Andrew. “But I go for broke when we do our shows – vocally and musically!” \nHis vocal and piano chops\, along with his keen sensibility to find and interpret a great lyric\, have led to some great opportunities for Walesch. In 2023\, Andrew accepted the position of artistic director of the MIM Music Theater in Phoenix\, Arizona where he now resides.   \nRecommended for fans of Tony Bennett\, Frank Sinatra\, Michael Bublé and Bing Crosby.

SUMMARY:Mark O'Connor's Appalachian Christmas
DESCRIPTION:“a national treasure” – Wynton Marsalis\n  \nThree-time Grammy winning composer and fiddler Mark O’Connor has created several arrangements of Christmas classics. Here\, he fashions a wondrous mixture of both instrumental and vocal music in bluegrass and other American music genres. The show features fresh takes on traditional songs with a few original compositions included. His renditions are playful and joyous\, but can be strikingly earnest too. Mark’s touring ensemble includes his wife Maggie O’Connor on fiddle and vocals. Additionally\, he will bring a variety of guest musicians on each tour. \nHaving toured An Appalachian Christmas nine consecutive years\, O’Connor and his ensemble have a dynamic energy on stage. Then\, they bring their individual expertise to holiday themes and classics in the most delightful and musically satisfying way! \n“…the reason we were all there was Mark O’Connor\, in all his lyrical perfection. There is no more aching line in contemporary American music than the melody in his Appalachia Waltz. Also\, the joy of his mandolin duet with his son in Macedonia\, a song Mark wrote years ago\, was pure delight. O’Connor is a composer and arranger of the highest order\, creating intriguing harmonies and rhythms in recognizable folk music. \nHe elevates a music with humble beginnings to impeccable elegance\, creating a whole different category. While the instrumentation is traditional in country music\, his deft treatment of the songs and choice of performers brings out unexpected elements. He’s more than a performer; he’s a suitor to the music\, to the instruments\, a passionate devotee of traditional forms and tools. And\, his adoration is evident in every note he writes and every chord he plays.”  by Meg Currell EDGE Media Network Contributor \nRecommended for fans of Sam Bush\, Yo-Yo Ma\, Nickel Creek and Edgar Meyer.

SUMMARY:The Klezmatics - Happy Joyous Hanukkah
DESCRIPTION:“catchy\, pulse-quickening party tunes and heart-warming melodies” – Jewish Chronicle\n  \nThis December\, The Klezmatics — the world’s most celebrated klezmer band — return with their beloved Happy Joyous Hanukkah Tour. As candles are lit across the country\, The Klezmatics honor both Jewish tradition and bold musical reinvention. \nFor nearly forty years\, The Klezmatics have been transforming klezmer from nostalgic memory into a living\, breathing\, revolutionary art form. And nowhere is that spirit more alive than in their legendary collaboration with Woody Guthrie. There\, his long-lost Hanukkah lyrics were brought to life in the band’s iconic 2006 album Happy Joyous Hanukkah. \nIn 2025\, that album will be reissued in a beautifully remastered vinyl edition\, just in time for the holiday season. Audiences will once again dance to Guthrie/Klezmatics favorites like “Hanuka Gelt\,” “Spin Dreydl Spin\,” and “Happy Joyous Hanuka”. Here\, the band brings the songs back to the stage — full of warmth\, humor\, and Yiddish soul. \nBut this year’s tour isn’t only about tradition — it’s also about what comes next. The Klezmatics will release their fourteenth studio album\, The New York Sessions\, in early 2026. Thus\, this Hanukkah tour will feature exclusive live premieres of brand-new material. These new songs continue the band’s legacy of addressing contemporary themes — from migration and solidarity to joy\, resistance\, and renewal. Moreover\, they explore these themes through the ecstatic power of Yiddish-rooted music. \nThe result is a Hanukkah concert like no other: a celebration of light in dark times. Here\, ancient stories meet new melodies\, and community is built through dance\, laughter\, and shared song. \nWhether you’ve been following The Klezmatics for decades or you’re lighting your first menorah\, this tour is for you. \nRecommended for fans of Chava Alberstein\, Klezmerson\, Burning Bush and Daniel Kahn.
