SUMMARY:Southside Aces: A Night in New Orleans
DESCRIPTION:“flawlessly replicate the sound of classic New Orleans” — Prairie Uprising\n  \nSouthside Aces are celebrating twenty years of performing the repertoire of the Jazz Age greats and beyond. From the early New Orleans of Jelly Roll Morton to the world-changing joys of Louis Armstrong. The barrel house sounds of Preservation Hall to the Crescent City rhythms of rock and roll pioneer Fats Domino. Treat yourself to a century’s worth of New Orleans jazz.  \nThe band first began as the brainchild of clarinetist Tony Balluff and sousaphone player Erik Jacobson. Their whispers and rumors materialized in Tony’s foyer in South Minneapolis\, in August 2003. Since their first gig on a flatbed truck in Apple Valley\, the Aces have released eight albums\, including their most recent —2022’s Minneapolis Bump— fifteen original songs inspired by the Jazz Age. \nIn New Orleans\, the jazz tradition thrives off a wide array of styles. The Aces possess a diverse repertoire\, with a roll call that includes the names of Louis Armstrong\, Jelly Roll Morton\, Hoagy Carmichael\, Duke Ellington\, and Bix Beiderbecke. Plus Crescent City classics like “Bourbon Street Parade”\, “Just A Closer Walk With Thee”\, and “St. James Infirmary”. And let’s not forget the funky rhythms of brass band powerhouses like “Mardi Gras in New Orleans” and “Palm Court Strut”! \nThe Southside Aces have performed at Dakota\, Icehouse\, Crooners Supper Club\, Vieux Carre\, Twin Cities Jazz Fest\, Bix Beiderbecke Jazz Festival\, and Minnesota Orchestra Sommerfest\, to name a few. They’ve driven dancers to a frenzy at national dance competitions and led second-line parades through the streets of the Twin Cities. And they’ve played events in Denver\, Omaha\, Chicago\, Des Moines\, and all across the great state of Minnesota — which\, if you’re keeping score\, makes them a “territory band.”  \nRecommended for fans of Preservation Hall Jazz Band\, Tuba Skinny\, Louis Armstrong and Fats Waller. \n📸: Paul Udstrand

SUMMARY:Tim Sparks\, Tom Lieberman & Ben Abrahamson
DESCRIPTION:“He’s one of the best musicians I know” – Leo Kottke\n  \nA special show of duos\, celebrating the versatility and dynamic range of the acoustic guitar! Guitar guru Tim Sparks will play a set with jazz and flamenco rising star Ben Abrahamson. Then\, he will play a set with folk blues guitarist and longtime Rio Nido bandmate Tom Lieberman.  \nTim Sparks has been redefining the acoustic guitar repertoire since he won the National Fingerpicking Championship in 1993 with a ground-breaking arrangement of Tchaikovsky’s Nutcracker Suite. Equally at home with country\, blues\, jazz or global music\, Sparks’s extraordinary ability has earned him an international reputation as one of the most innovative guitarists working today. \nBen Abrahamson is a fresh\, dynamic voice on the acoustic guitar. His compositions evoke the dexterity of flamenco and the harmonic storytelling of jazz. His passion for flamenco guitar drove him to Taller de Músics School of Music in Barcelona. There\, he studied under Juan Ramón Caro. He has composed works for the Minneapolis Guitar Quartet\, Zorongo Flamenco Dance Theatre\, Mac Jazz big band\, and more. Furthermore\, Ben has shared the stage with mentors like Michael and Tony Hauser\, Susana di Palma\, La Conja\, and Chuscales.  \nAs creative director and producer\, Tom Lieberman has contributed to productions that have received numerous awards of distinction. As a guitarist\, Tom has performed all over the country\, including a ten-year run on A Prairie Home Companion (he was replaced by Chet Atkins). In addition to Rio Nido\, Tom performs both as a solo artist\, and with his group\, Tommy & The Liebermen. His 2013 album\, Common Denominator\, made Star Tribune’s Top Ten list for the year. It was described as “bluesy\, simmering\, profoundly philosophical” and “a charming\, eclectic album of original songs.” \nRecommended for fans of Leo Kottke\, Marc Ribot\, Bill Frisell and Rio Nido.

SUMMARY:Hiromi's Sonicwonder
DESCRIPTION:“One of jazz piano’s most brazenly virtuosic players.” – New York Times\n  \nJazz piano phenomenon Hiromi has seamlessly shifted from one spellbinding project to the next in her two decade-plus recording career. In the process\, she’s earned a reputation as one of the most explosive live performers in jazz history. Furthermore\, she has become a global ambassador for the art form. Her many triumphs include an NPR Tiny Desk Concert that has racked up 2 million views. She also had the opportunity to represent her native Japan with a performance at the 2021 Summer Olympics in Tokyo. She won the 2024 Best Music Score for the animated feature film Blue Giant (Award of the Japanese Academy). Finally\, a Grammy award for a collaboration with fusion hero Stanley Clarke. Her artistry is — to borrow a descriptor The New Yorker favored — “dazzling.” \nShe released Sonicwonderland in 2023\, debuting perhaps the most expressive\, dynamic and versatile working band of her career. Featuring Hadrien Feraud on bass\, Gene Coye on drums and trumpeter Adam O’Farrill\, the group furthered Hiromi’s distinctive musical alchemy. Here\, she melds the spirit of classic jazz-rock fusion with classically rooted virtuosity\, entrancing funk\, pop flourishes and\, through O’Farrill’s trumpet\, acoustic jazz’s state of the art. \nThe album also did a remarkable job of capturing Hiromi’s mastery as a live entertainer. As The Guardian noted\, “Sonicwonderland is perhaps the closest thing to Hiromi’s onstage exuberance.” \nBut that was only the beginning. \nSonicwonder has continued to tour and work together consistently\, advancing their deep chemistry and fearless sense of interplay. The results can be heard on Hiromi’s new album\, 2025’s Out There. Here\, the group’s powerful rapport meets the pianist’s astonishing abilities as a composer on equal footing. \nRecommended for fans of Chick Corea\, Keith Jarrett\, Herbie Hancock and Weather Report. \n📸: Mitsuru Nishimura

SUMMARY:Tarbaby
DESCRIPTION:  \nThe three members of Tarbaby – pianist Orrin Evans\, bassist Eric Revis\, and drummer Nasheet Waits – share a long history together. There\, this dates to well before the formation of the trio. They share core beliefs about acknowledging the overarching tradition of the music while being true to one’s own story. Additionally\, they’re an ensemble of serious intentions and riotous humor\, intense spirit and fierce intellect\, passion and purpose. Here\, that all melds and collides in their provocative and risk-welcoming sound. \nThis eclectic power trio released two bold albums in 2024. You Think This America marks the first time Tarbaby has recorded an entire album strictly in piano trio format. Here\, this marks a first for a band whose career is marked by collaborations. They recorded the album live at New York’s Hunter College and mixed originals with wide-ranging covers. Further\, they play songs by Ornette Coleman\, David Murray\, Andrew Hill\, Sunny Murray\, and The Stylistics. \nA yet-to-be-titled studio release will follow later with several special guests. Joining the band are Philadelphia spoken word artist Ursula Rucker\, powerful saxophonist JD Allen\, and exploratory\, tightrope-walking saxophonist Bill McHenry. Also\, the pseudonymous “Prometheus Jenkins” (a few notes will suffice to identify the sax master behind the alias). \nRecommended for fans of Branford Marsalis\, The Bad Plus\, Jason Moran and Maurice Brown.

SUMMARY:Ben Sidran
DESCRIPTION:  \nBen Sidran’s love of music has led to work as pianist\, singer-songwriter\, author\, record producer and music journalist. Also\, he has accomplished many other things in his sixty-year career. Further\, he acts as his own short-order cook\, juggling his own career and his projects. He has produced Steve Miller\, Mose Allison\, Diana Ross\, Boz Scaggs\, Phil Upchurch\, Tony Williams\, Jon Hendricks\, Richie Cole and Van Morrison. He recorded his most recent solo album\, 2024’s Rainmaker\, in France and features a collection of original songs. He channels today’s complexities through his “hipster” filter and demonstrates why he is indeed the “first ever existential jazz rapper”.  \nIt’s been a long and varied journey for Sidran. As a six-year-old in Racine\, Wisconsin\, he played boogie-woogie piano\, leaning into his jazz records\, “literally like an Eskimo huddled around a fire”. Then\, he would grow up to play boogie-woogie piano around the world. He may be better known in Europe and Japan than in America. Also\, this is a fact of life for most jazz musicians. Despite that\, Ben Sidran is an American success story. \nHe’s a jazz pianist of international renown\, lyricist of a rock classic\, award-winning national broadcaster\, record and video producer. Also\, he’s a scholar\, author\, journalist\, and father to a second-generation musical prodigy. Sidran makes your average Renaissance man look like a slacker. \nHe is joined by his longtime bandmates and collaborators\, Billy Peterson on bass and Leo Sidran (his son) on drums. Also\, featuring special guest Ricky Peterson on organ. \nRecommended for fans of Mose Allison\, Marcia Ball\, Dan Hicks and Joey DeFrancesco.

SUMMARY:Naturally 7
DESCRIPTION:  \nNaturally 7 is unlike any vocal ensemble you’ve ever heard. No less than Quincy Jones has called them “the best a cappella group in the world”! \nThey are known worldwide for their extensive tours with Michael Bublé and as guests with Coldplay and Diana Ross. Moreover\, the New York-based septet is a band in the classic sense. They create the sounds of guitars\, bass\, horns\, keyboards\, drums\, and other instruments through the power of their voices. Here\, they call their signature style “vocal play.” \nThe band was founded in 1999 by brothers Roger and Warren Thomas. Then\, the group’s approach was cemented after wins in regional and national a cappella competitions. However\, the Thomases were faced with a decision. Should the group continue to just be voices only\, or part of a traditional band? Their solution: “why not both?” \nThe group released their acclaimed debut\, Non-Fiction\, in 2000 – a release blending gospel\, soul\, and pop. Then\, over the past quarter century\, Naturally 7 have recorded a dozen albums. Additionally\, they have appeared along with Ludacris on the title track of Quincy Jones’ 2010 release Q: Soul Bossa Nostra. Furthermore\, they have performed on stages worldwide with Stevie Wonder\, Quincy Jones\, Sarah Connor\, Lionel Richie\, The Roots\, and more. \nRecommended for fans of Take 6\, Raul Midon\, Boyz II Men and Anthony Hamilton. \n \n📸: Nina Sieber

Moreover\, their roll call includes the names of Louis Armstrong\, Jelly Roll Morton\, Hoagy Carmichael\, Duke Ellington\, and Bix Beiderbecke. Plus\, Crescent City classics like “Bourbon Street Parade”\, “Just A Closer Walk With Thee”\, and “St. James Infirmary”. And let’s not forget the funky rhythms of brass band powerhouses like “Mardi Gras in New Orleans” and “Palm Court Strut”! \nThe Southside Aces have performed at the Dakota\, Icehouse\, Crooners Supper Club\, Vieux Carre and Twin Cities Jazz Fest. SUMMARY:Sam Miltich & The Clearwater Hot Club
DESCRIPTION:Sam Miltich\, guitar\nMark Kreitzer\, guitar\nTony Balluff\, clarinet\nMatthew Miltich\, bass \nThe Clearwater Hot Club is dedicated to preserving the repertoire and instrumentation of the jazz manouche style. This was pioneered by Roma jazz guitarist Django Reinhardt. Many of the songs played in this group were either performed or written by Django Reinhardt. However\, other styles of music such as French musette\, Brazilian choro\, and eastern European folk music are covered. Here\, they are interpreted through the musical lens and technique of the jazz manouche style. In recent years Sam Miltich has written original works of music in the jazz manouche style. Additionally\, he lends credence to the music’s roots and traditions while bringing a fresh new voice to it.   \nThe Clearwater Hot Club is true to its name when referencing the word “club”\, as the band has a rotating cast of musicians. Since its beginnings in 2000 the Clearwater Hot Club’s primary members have been Sam Miltich (lead guitar) and Matthew Miltich (upright bass). \nSam Miltich is a self-taught jazz guitarist born and raised in the woods of northern Minnesota. Sam burst onto the hot club jazz scene in his teens. Then\, he joined Paul Mehling’s Hot Club of San Francisco and toured internationally with the world-renowned Robin Nolan Trio. Sam’s fluid\, instinctive sound has graced hundreds of stages\, from small Iron Range towns to New York’s Lincoln Center. In addition to fronting his own band\, the Clearwater Hot Club\, Sam frequently performs solo. Also\, he has recorded and performed with many of the Twin Cities’ top jazz artists. \nRecommended for fans of Django Reinhardt\, Dorado Schmitt\, Bireli Lagrene and Paulus Schafer.

SUMMARY:Lizz Wright
DESCRIPTION:  \nRenowned vocalist and songwriter Lizz Wright sings with a soaring reflection of the cultural fabric of America. New York Times hails her “smooth\, dark alto possessed of qualities you might associate with barrel-aged bourbon or butter-soft leather”. She lies beneath the script of history\, transcending social divides with an offer of love and deep sense of humanity. Also\, her music accepts the beauty of reality and creates a collective experience of belonging for the listener. Thus\, Wright’s songs embody a tradition that allows us to always feel at home. \nWright’s latest\, 2024’s Shadow\, presents Lizz in a gentle and triumphant light. With five originals penned by Wright\, Shadow is anchored by acoustic guitars. Then\, she layers with string quartets\, harp\, Carnatic Indian classical strings\, gospel vocals\, and bare emotion. It celebrates the intimacy of romantic love\, loss\, community\, and healing. Moreover\, the album features acclaimed guest artists Angelique Kidjo and Meshell Ndegeocello. \nWright first made a name for herself at twenty-two as a vocalist with a touring concert tribute to Billie Holiday. At twenty-three\, she released Salt\, which topped Billboard’s contemporary jazz charts. Then\, she released the albums Dreaming Wide Awake (2005)\, The Orchard (2008)\, and Fellowship (2010). Wright released Freedom & Surrender (2016)\, featuring the single “Lean In\,” which landed on President Obama’s Summer 2016 playlist. Wright’s 2022 release\, Holding Space\, was a live recording of a concert in Berlin at the Columbia Theater. Here\, this marked her debut live album on her own Blues and Greens Records. \nRecommended for fans of Cassandra Wilson\, Dianne Reeves\, Norah Jones and Gregory Porter.  \n\n📸: Hollis King
