SUMMARY:The Bad Plus Farewell Tour Finale
DESCRIPTION:“finely orchestrated\, catchy original tunes\, and a knack for radically reconstituted pop covers.” – The New York Times \n  \nThe Bad Plus are the ultimate originals. A democratic unit with a clear vision and a refusal to conform to convention. For the past two decades\, they have played with spirit and adventure and have made their own rules. Moreover\, they do so with a bold sense of creativity and intent. Avoiding easy categorization\, The Bad Plus has won critical acclaim and a legion of fans worldwide. Further\, their unique sound and flair for live performance make them a must-see ensemble. \nNow in their twenty-sixth year\, The Bad Plus continues to push boundaries. Here\, founding members Reid Anderson (bass) and Dave King (drums) embark on a new piano-less incarnation of the band. Also\, Ben Monder (guitar) and Chris Speed (tenor saxophone) join the group\, instigating a new wave of excitement and anticipation. These new voices are re-energizing their sound and inspiration. The Bad Plus have constantly searched to bridge genres and techniques. Additionally\, they explore the infinite possibilities of exceptional musicians working in perfect sync. \nThe Bad Plus’s sixteenth release\, 2024’s Complex Emotions strikes out in stunning new directions. Here\, it often sounds radically different than anything the band has done before\, while still maintaining the band’s vital and unmistakable identity. Credit that to all four members’ instinctual attraction to song form\, the compelling immediacy of their collective improvisations. Also\, yes\, their willingness to drill down into the full gamut of emotional complexity. The band can veer into so much unexplored terrain yet still emerge sounding like The Bad Plus on Complex Emotions. Thus\, this is a testament to their finely crafted identity and insistence on constantly evolving.  \nThis is The Bad Plus in their most creative and expressive form. This is The Bad Plus now. \nRecommended for fans of Brad Mehldau\, Joshua Redman\, Bill Frisell and Kurt Rosenwinkel.

SUMMARY:The New Standards Preener's Eve Show
DESCRIPTION:“The DNA of the band and its members has its feet firmly rooted into punk/pop culture.” – New York Times\n  \nMinnesota stalwarts The New Standards create an intriguing blend of everything from classic cabaret to punk rock. They blend the freedom of jazz with the soul of pop and rock. They make it work through offbeat humor and sheer musicianship. The instrumentation is simple: John Munson of Trip Shakespeare/Semisonic fame on bass; Chan Poling\, founder of the new-wave group The Suburbs on piano; and Steve Roehm on vibes. Chan and John split the singing. A footstomp here\, a shout-out there\, a fiery solo\, and it’s cooked. Simple\, elegant\, illuminating. \nThe New Standards started in 2005 as an off-shoot project. Since then\, TNS has grown into a globe-spanning adventure\, filling theaters and clubs around the world. Additionally\, they have created several albums\, videos\, cartoons\, dance/theater projects\, and ancillary gewgaws that have charmed and delighted faithful fans. \nAll three are fans of great songwriting. However\, they sensed a lack of an interesting jazz trio repertoire beyond the usual “old standards”. They got together originally to play and sing their favorite songs from every era\, particularly post-1960s pop music. Familiar tunes in a stripped-down acoustic setting\, leaving room for solos and arrangements with the freedom of jazz. Yet\, they never fully abandon the modest soul of pop and rock. \nAnother thing: though you may associate an acoustic tango version of Britney Spears’s “Toxic” with camp\, TNS is not a lounge or novelty act. One listen to their music reveals that they take their music-making as well as their jobs as entertainers seriously. \nAnd yet\, they are very funny. \nRecommended for fans of Joe Henry\, Semisonic\, The Suburbs and Dylan Hicks.

She religiously spun Led Zeppelin\, Black Sabbath and Simon and Garfunkel records belonging to her folk singer mom. \nTo this day\, Davina still refers to music as “my first and eternal love.” Despite early dalliances with classical piano and guitar\, she developed a heavy drug habit in high school. This morphed into heroin dependency\, left her homeless\, sent her in and out of jail and brought on all manner of trouble. SUMMARY:Steve Turre
DESCRIPTION:“amazing… straight-ahead\, energetic jazz” – L.A. Times\n  \nSteve Turre\, trombone & shells\nTeodross Avery\, saxophone\nCorcoran Holt\, bass\nXavier Davis\, piano\nOrion Turre\, drums \nTrombonist and seashellist Steve Turre is one of the world’s preeminent jazz innovators. He has consistently won both the Readers’ and Critics’ polls in JazzTimes\, Downbeat\, and Jazziz. He has won awards for Best Trombone and for Best Miscellaneous Instrumentalist (shells). \nTurre was born to Mexican-American parents and grew up in the San Francisco Bay area. While living there\, he absorbed daily doses of mariachi\, blues and jazz. When in college\, he joined the Escovedo Brothers salsa band\, which began his career-long involvement with that genre. \nIn 1972 Steve Turre’s career picked up momentum when Ray Charles hired him to go on tour. A year later\, Turre’s mentor Woody Shaw brought him into Art Blakey’s Jazz Messengers. Turre then went on to work with a diverse list of musicians from the jazz\, Latin\, and pop worlds. These include Dizzy Gillespie\, McCoy Tyner\, J.J. Johnson\, Herbie Hancock\, Lester Bowie\, Tito Puente\, Mongo Santamaria\, and Van Morrison. Also\, Pharoah Sanders\, Horace Silver\, Max Roach\, and Rahsaan Roland Kirk. The latter introduced him to the seashell as an instrument. Soon after that\, while touring in Mexico City with Woody Shaw\, Turre’s relatives informed him that his ancestors similarly played the shells. Since then\, Turre has incorporated seashells into his diverse musical style. \nIn addition to performing as a member of the Saturday Night Live Band since 1984\, Turre continually evolves as a musician and arranger. He has a strong command of all musical genres. When it comes to his distinct brand of jazz\, he always keeps one foot in the past and one in the future. \nRecommended for fans of Woody Shaw\, J.J. Johnson\, Lester Bowie and David Murray.

SUMMARY:Brittany Davis & Black Thunder
DESCRIPTION:“a towering achievement and a visionary musical statement” – AllMusic\n  \n2025’s Black Thunder is the dazzling\, fully improvised\, fully realized new album by Seattle-based musician\, producer\, and engineer Brittany Davis. This album features the artist on keys and vocals\, Evan Flory-Barnes on bass\, and D’Vonne Lewis on drums. It recalls artists like Nina Simone\, Roberta Flack\, and Rahsaan Roland Kirk in its immersive\, incantatory spirit. \nThe trio — who barely knew each other previously — extemporized Black Thunder in a surge of interactive creativity. They recorded the entire album over two days in the studio. The pressure-cooker environment removed any overthinking and brought each musician’s A-game. Steeped in Black and Afrocentric cultural influences\, this is Davis’s most poignant and cathartic work to date. \n“draws on Davis’ organic connection to spirit\, song and soul” – DownBeat \n“Brittany\, Evan\, and D’Vonne have\, in some way\, been preparing for this recording all their lives. Honing their instrumental craft and ability\, of course. But more importantly\, preparing their ears\, emotions\, and egos to be fully present and create absolutely in the moment\,” producer Josh Evans (Pearl Jam) says. “To listen deeply and respond empathetically. To speak with uncomfortable honesty; to listen\, and be vulnerable.” \nBlack Thunder marks a shift away from the drum machines and programmed keys of her previous album\, 2024’s Image Issues. This is a fully live\, organic performance\, one that showcases her stylistic maturation and the breadth of her versatility. \nBlack Thunder may contain a throng of voices\, but they coalesce into one. Here is a sui generis artist charting a course all her own. By bulldozing easy narratives and accessing the realm of pure feeling\, Davis’ latest missive is a creative thunderclap that will be impossible to unhear. \nRecommended for fans of Nina Simone\, Isaiah Collier\, Kamasi Washington and Roberta Flack.

SUMMARY:Bizhiki
DESCRIPTION:“artfully use powwow vocals as a counterpoint to melody-driven arrangements… their power is commanding” – Guardian\n  \nUnbound\, Bizhiki’s 2024 album\, opens with a single\, trembling chord that rises and descends before meeting a warm\, beguiling voice. This voice sings in a tradition that people have heard in this northern river country for millennia. The music that follows is a soulful dialogue between the ancient tradition of powwow singing and a contemporary musical palette. On Unbound\, Bizhiki entwines the powwow style with synthesized voice modulation\, and accents hand drumming with electronic samples and beats. The harmonies and resonances on this album are equal parts cultural and musical. \nMany of the songs on this album go back to when the spirit of the Bizhiki was forged\, over a decade ago\, on the banks of Wisconsin’s Chippewa River. Dylan Bizhikiins Jennings\, one of the two principal Native voices on the album\, remembers getting an invitation to play the Eaux Claires festival in 2015. “I was driving up in Cornucopia\, Wisconsin — way out in the middle of nowhere —and I got a call.” There was a festival on the Ojibwe’s ancestral homelands\, and the organizers wouldn’t feel right without the involvement of the land’s native communities. “I agreed\,” he remembers. “And I told them I wished more people thought like this. That they would say ‘we’re gonna give your people space and just invite you to do what you wanna do.’” \nBizhiki’s Unbound is a collaboration between a group of singers and musicians at a particular time and place. All of them look to help by exchanging ideas in an open-ended dialogue. Bizhikiins Jennings says there’s a lesson here for himself and his new group. “Just like in life\, we’re learning and we’re maturing\, and we’re becoming who we are.” \nRecommended for fans of Bon Iver\, Keith Secola\, Jeremy Dutcher and Northern Cree.

SUMMARY:The Cookers: 20th Anniversary Tour
DESCRIPTION:“A dream team of forward-leaning hard-bop” – New York Times\n  \nDonald Harrison\, saxophone\nBilly Harper\, saxophone\nCecil McBee\, bass\nGeorge Cables\, piano\nEddie Henderson\, trumpet\nDavid Weiss\, trumpet\nBilly Hart\, drums \nExperience counts\, especially in jazz. The more time musicians spend interpreting tunes and interacting with others\, the more articulation an audience can expect. You can hear the fruits of such work in the expressive language The Cookers bring to the bandstand. This exciting all-star septet summons an aggressive mid ‘60s spirit with a potent collection of expansive post-bop originals. They have the requisite killer instincts and pyrotechnic playing expected of some of the heaviest hitters today. \nBilly Harper\, Cecil McBee\, George Cables\, Eddie Henderson\, and Billy Hart started in the heady era of the mid ‘60s. That period found the dimensions of hard bop morphing from their original designs. Further\, each artist helped facilitate the process as members of some of the most important bands of the era. Hart and Henderson were members of Herbie Hancock’s groundbreaking Mwandishi group. Cecil McBee anchored Charles Lloyd’s great ’60s quartet alongside Keith Jarrett and Jack DeJohnette. Billy Harper was part of Lee Morgan’s last group\, and also Max Roach’s Quartet and Art Blakey’s Jazz Messengers. George Cables was featured in groups led by Sonny Rollins\, Joe Henderson\, Freddie Hubbard\, Dexter Gordon and Art Pepper. \nDavid Weiss and Donald Harrison are from a more recent generation and are the youngest members of the band. There\, they gained experience performing with Art Blakey\, Bobby Hutcherson\, Freddie Hubbard\, Charles Tolliver\, Roy Haynes and Herbie Hancock. \nRecommended for fans of the Jazz Messengers\, Lee Morgan\, Herbie Hancock and the SFJazz Collective.

SUMMARY:Maria Schneider Orchestra
DESCRIPTION:“breathtaking\, full of inspired composition and musicianship.” – DownBeat\n  \nMaria Schneider’s music has been described as “evocative\, majestic\, heart-stoppingly gorgeous\, epic and beyond categorization.” Blurring the boundaries between jazz and classical traditions\, she is among the few artists to receive Grammy Awards in multiple genres. She has received honors in jazz and classical categories\, as well as for her work with David Bowie. \nSince her debut recording\, 1994’s Evanescence\, Schneider has developed a distinctive compositional language for her 18-member orchestra. She writes specifically for the individualistic voices within the ensemble. The group has performed worldwide\, and Schneider has guest-conducted more than ninety ensembles across thirty countries. \nHer most recent project\, 2026’s American Crow\, expands her work into a cinematic dimension. Released as both a music video and EP\, the piece pairs sweeping orchestration with striking visual imagery. Schneider uses jazz to illustrate the art of listening\, a practice she feels could help heal our fractured cultural landscape. The work continues her group’s exploration of collective listening and the emotional power of large-ensemble storytelling. \nSchneider’s double album\, 2020’s Data Lords was a Pulitzer Prize Finalist and won two Grammy Awards. It was named Jazz Album of the Year by the Jazz Journalists Association and NPR and received France’s Grand Prix de l’Académie du Jazz. The project fused her artistic vision with her longstanding advocacy around technology and culture. As NPR’s Nate Chinen wrote\, it “amounts to the most daring work of Schneider’s career.” \nHer honors include fourteen Grammy nominations and seven Grammy Awards\, and designation as an NEA Jazz Master. She has also been elected to the American Academy of Arts and Letters\, and received the ASCAP Concert Music Award. \nRecommended for fans of Toshiko Akiyoshi\, Thad Jones/Mel Lewis Orchestra\, Terence Blanchard and Carla Bley.

SUMMARY:Los Lobos
DESCRIPTION:“one of the hottest live acts on the planet” – BBC\n  \nIt’s a matter of time. Fifty years to be exact. And in that time Los Lobos have created an unprecedented body of work\, a legacy of greatness. The numbers are staggering: 100+ gigs a year for five decades running\, crossing millions of miles to rock millions of fans. And that’s just at the live shows. \nThey’ve also recorded seventeen studio albums\, seven live LPs\, three compilations\, two EPs\, two DVDs\, and contributed over forty guest appearances on their friends’ recordings. They have garnered five Grammys\, an Austin City Limits Hall of Fame induction and the ALMA Ritchie Valens Pioneer Award. \nBut beyond all the hoopla and applause (and the source of it all\, really) is the tremendous heart. Rather\, hearts. Cinco corazones. Five blood brothers who have dedicated their off-stage time to helping others\, working for peace and justice. Further\, they’ve penned some of the most literate and important music of their time. They transform the hard cries from the East L.A. barrio into songs of hope\, tales of common folk finding ways to endure. \nThe young wolves were weaned on late-night radio’s soul\, R&B\, and doo-wop. Were cured through the African-American currents of the blues\, jazz\, and rock ‘n’ roll. An amalgam. As proud Chicanos\, their songs have always glistened with the distillation from their Mexican and Latin American roots. \nQuite simply\, they are one of the tightest\, one of the best\, one of the most prolific bands ever. And\, amazingly\, with the original founding members as the pack the entire time. Unprecedented. As their liner notes put it\, quite simply: “Los Lobos still are David Hidalgo\, Louie Pérez\, Jr.\, Cesar Rosas\, Conrad Lozano\, Steve Berlin.” \n📸: Piero F. Giunti \nRecommended for fans of Alejandro Escovedo\, Roy Orbison\, Ritchie Valens and Elvis Presley.
