SUMMARY:The Beatles Reimagined
DESCRIPTION:“known for his (Jeff Perry) hip reimagining of songs.” – Star Tribune\n  \nJazz musicians have covered and reinterpreted songs by The Beatles for the past fifty years. With the Beatles Reimagined show\, three of Minnesota’s most prominent guitarists build on this tradition. Here\, they display their own “hip retooling” (Star Tribune) of classic songs by the Fab Four. Hear guitarists Tim Sparks\, Zacc Harris\, and show curator Jeff Perry\, with bassist Matt Blake and drummer Bob Johnston. Moreover\, the frequent rotation and pairings of the guitarists makes for an exciting\, fast-paced show. Also\, their imaginative approaches brings you Beatles classics like you’ve never heard them before. \nJeff Perry has been described as “fabulous… one of the Twin Cities’ best” by the Dakota. Furthermore\, over many years Perry developed a proven repertoire that includes beloved songs from across the musical and generational spectrum. Jeff Perry performs high-quality music that connects with people from many generations and backgrounds.  \nTim Sparks has been redefining the acoustic guitar repertoire for decades. He won the National Fingerpicking Championship in 1993 with a ground-breaking arrangement of Tchaikovsky’s Nutcracker Suite. Further\, Sparks’s extraordinary ability has garnered an international reputation as one of the most innovative guitarists working today. \nZacc Harris is a Minneapolis-based guitarist\, composer\, and educator known for his work with Atlantis Quartet and many other groups. A bandleader and recording artist\, his projects explore modern jazz\, original composition\, and creative improvisation. He is on the faculty at MacPhail Center for Music and directs the Dakota Jazz Ensemble. \nRecommended for fans of The Beatles.

SUMMARY:The New Standards
DESCRIPTION:“The DNA of the band and its members has its feet firmly rooted into punk/pop culture.” – New York Times\n  \nMinnesota stalwarts The New Standards create an intriguing blend of everything from classic cabaret to punk rock. Here\, they blend the freedom of jazz with  the soul of pop and rock. They make it work through offbeat humor and sheer musicianship. The instrumentation is simple: John Munson of Trip Shakespeare/Semisonic fame on bass; Chan Poling\, founder of the new-wave group The Suburbs on piano; and Steve Roehm on vibes. Chan and John split the singing. A footstomp here\, a shout-out there\, a fiery solo\, and it’s cooked. Simple\, elegant\, illuminating. \nThe New Standards started in 2005 as an off-shoot project. Since then\, TNS has grown into a globe-spanning adventure\, filling theaters and clubs around the world. Additionally\, they have created several albums\, videos\, cartoons\, dance/theater projects\, and ancillary gewgaws that have charmed and delighted faithful fans. \nAll three are fans of great songwriting. However\, they sensed a lack of an interesting jazz trio repertoire beyond the usual “old standards”. Thus\, they got together originally to play and sing their favorite songs from every era\, particularly post-1960s pop music. Familiar tunes in a stripped-down acoustic setting\, leaving room for solos and arrangements with the freedom of jazz. Yet\, they never fully abandon the modest soul of pop and rock. \nAnother thing: though you may associate an acoustic tango version of Britney Spears’s “Toxic” with camp\, TNS is not a lounge or novelty act. One listen to their music reveals that they take their music-making as well as their jobs as entertainers seriously. \nAnd yet\, they are very funny. \nRecommended for fans of Joe Henry\, Semisonic\, The Suburbs and Dylan Hicks.

SUMMARY:Inara George (of The Bird and the Bee)
DESCRIPTION:“exploring the intersection between jazz\, Tropicalia\, and indie pop” – AllMusic\n  \nInara George is a Los Angeles–based singer and songwriter whose voice and musicality move easily between pop\, folk\, and jazz. Here\, she is best known as one half of The Bird and the Bee with Grammy-winning producer Greg Kurstin. Additionally\, she is a member of The Living Sisters. She has built a rich and varied career that spans acclaimed solo work\, collaborations with VanDyke Parks and Michael Andrews. Furthermore\, her performances range from venues like the Hollywood Bowl and Carnegie Hall to beloved Los Angeles clubs like Largo and the Troubadour. \nHer latest release is 2026’s Songs of Douglass and Littell. There\, she revisits music written years ago by her friends and longtime collaborators Philip Littell and Eliot Douglass. The album offers a fresh interpretation of their work—one that veers into new territory for George. Moreover\, she dives more deeply into jazz-inspired phrasing\, harmony\, and mood than ever before. However\, these interpretations fit seamlessly within the arc of her broader catalog. Here\, they reflect the same warmth\, wit\, and melodic imagination that define her earlier work. In performance\, the music from Songs of Douglass and Littell feel like a natural extension of the voice and sensibility that have long been at the heart of her sound. \nRecommended for fans of Nellie McKay\, The Bird and the Bee\, Amos Lee & Ingrid Michaelson.

SUMMARY:Mavis Staples w/ Special Guest Lucius at The Ordway
DESCRIPTION:“an eternal voice… which still informs pop music today” – Billboard\n  \nGrim days call for fierce love. And Mavis Staples\, one of the most enduring figures in American music\, lays it down. 2025’s Sad and Beautiful World marks the fifteenth solo album from a national treasure and multigenerational talent. Here\, Mavis stands side by side with us in the face of dangers she knows all too well. The record spans seven decades of the American songbook\, a range nearly as vast as Mavis’ career. On it\, she reinvents timeless songs as well as including original music.  \nNow 86\, Mavis has performed since the age of eight. After starting out in the Staple Singers more than seventy years ago\, she remains the group’s lone surviving member. Here\, she still carries her family’s gifts and knowledge with her as a living heritage.  \nShe considered retiring in 2023 but found she has too much left to express through music. And now\, despite our dark days\, as she said in the wake of her 85th birthday party last year\, “You have to stay hopeful and have faith that things are going to get better.” She can’t keep us from the danger facing the country or magically restore the progress that’s being undone. However\, she knows from her own experience that people can find a path through\, a way to keep going.  \nThus\, Staples may be one of the last true ones standing. Now\, she isn’t waiting around to be revered for the wisdom she brings. Here\, she’s too busy still leading the charge\, still showing us how it’s done. Steadfast in triumph and adversity\, Mavis Staples still makes music—and history—just when we need her most. \n  \n \nGrammy-nominated indie-pop band Lucius delivers a mesmerizing experience of mirrored kinship and honesty. Also\, they have earned a reputation for their engaging live performances and spellbinding harmonies. In 2025\, the band released their fourth studio album\, Lucius\, which Rolling Stone called “the best album of their career.” Lucius’ most personal and purposeful album to date explores relationships\, motherhood\, and life’s complexities with a unique vulnerability that the band’s familial nature made possible. The New Yorker praises\, “The band’s new self-titled album reaches the pinnacle of a vibrant\, harmonic enterprise\,” while Paste describes their sound as “girl-group revivalism\, cosmic pop\, and a kind of bicoastal harmonizing that once echoed through western canyons.”  \nThroughout their acclaimed career\, Lucius has performed on “Jimmy Kimmel Live!” and “The Late Show with Stephen Colbert”. Also\, BBC’s “Later! with Jools Holland”\, PBS’ “Austin City Limits” and “The Kelly Clarkson Show”. Lucius are Holly Laessig\, Jess Wolfe\, and Peter Lalish. \nRecommended for fans of The Staple Singers\, Bettye LaVette\, Steve Earle and Blind Boys of Alabama.

SUMMARY:Judy Collins: Sweet Judy Blue Eyes - Farewell
DESCRIPTION:“One of the most beautiful and moving voices” – Rolling Stone\n  \nJudy Collins inspires audiences with her sublime vocals\, boldly vulnerable songwriting\, personal life triumphs\, and unwavering commitment to social activism. In the 1960s\, she evoked both the idealism and steely determination of a generation united against social and environmental injustices. Five decades later\, her luminescent presence shines brightly. Here\, new generations bask in the glow of her iconic fifty-five-album body of work. Also\, they draw inspiration from her spiritual discipline to thrive in the music industry for half a century. \nFans and critics highly esteem the award-winning singer-songwriter for her imaginative interpretations of traditional and contemporary folk standards. Moreover\, she also receives acclaim for her own poetically poignant original compositions. For instance\, the Grammy Hall of Fame includes her stunning rendition of Joni Mitchell’s “Both Sides Now”. Judy’s dreamy\, intimate version of Stephen Sondheim’s “Send in the Clowns\,” won Song of the Year at the 1975 Grammys. Furthermore\, she’s garnered several top-ten hits and gold- and platinum-selling albums. \nThe cultural treasure’s fifty-fifth release\, 2022’s Spellbound\, documents Judy’s artistic renaissance. Additionally\, the album is a special entry in her oeuvre. It marks the first time ever she wrote all the songs on one of her albums. Here\, Collins showcases twelve new recently-written modern folk songs\, and a bonus track of her evergreen\, “The Blizzard.” Thus\, Spellbound is an introspective and impressionistic album. \n“They say after the plague came the Renaissance\,” Judy says with a good-natured laugh. “The truth is\, I didn’t do an album like this sooner because I had other projects on my mind. Now felt like the perfect time to make this record because\, after all that’s happened in the world\, we need something beautiful and inspirational to lift us up.” \nRecommended for fans of Joan Baez\, Joni Mitchell\, Nanci Griffith and Mary Chapin Carpenter.
