SUMMARY:Keyon Harrold
DESCRIPTION:  \nAward-winning trumpeter\, vocalist\, songwriter\, and producer Keyon Harrold is touring in support of Grammy-nominated recording\, 2024’s Foreverland. This crossover album features a bevy of collaborators. These include British R&B vocalist Laura Mvula\, emerging young singer Malaya\, Common\, Robert Glasper and PJ Morton. \nHarrold first came into the international spotlight as the trumpet voice behind the Grammy-winning Don Cheadle film Miles Ahead. As a bandleader\, he creates a compelling new statement with a riveting mix of jazz\, Afrobeat\, soul\, spoken word\, hip-hop\, blues\, rock\, and American folk. Additionally\, as a soloist\, his distinctly warm trumpet sound simmers in the middle register. Here\, he creates drama without aggrandizing\, and mesmerizes live audiences with an emotionally charged concert presentation. Wynton Marsalis has stated “Keyon Harrold is the future of the trumpet”. \nIn addition to being one of the leading voices in jazz\, Harrold has collaborated with many hip-hop and pop artists. For example\, Snoop Dogg\, Jay Z\, Beyonce\, Rihanna\, Eminem\, Maxwell\, and Anthony Hamilton. Also\, rock legends Keith Richards and Jeff Beck. These experiences broadened his musical horizons beyond jazz to include funk\, Afrobeat\, R&B\, rock and roll\, and hip hop. \nHe is currently touring an ensemble that is making one of the strongest artistic statements of any musical group today. While rooted in jazz music\, the band freestyles and solos with authority and weaves the spectrum of African American music. Thus\, they create a sonic expression that can best be described as bop pop hip-hop jazz! \nRecommended for fans of Robert Glasper\, Roy Hargrove\, Marquis Hill and Theo Croker. \n \n📸: Kwafu Alston

SUMMARY:Dominique Fils-Aimé
DESCRIPTION:  \nTwo-time Juno Award-winning singer-songwriter Dominique Fils-Aimé places the history of African American musical culture at the heart of her work. Based in Montreal\, she reflects on the social realities that have influenced the genres of blues\, jazz and soul. Moreover\, her trilogy highlights the history of African American music. Thus\, three albums in quick succession were inspired by soul icons such as Billie Holiday\, Nina Simone and Etta James. \n2018’s Nameless was about confronting historical silences and sorrows. This blues-tinged album has become an audiophile’s reference recording across the globe. Also\, the album’s success led to two sold-out shows at the 2018 Montreal International Jazz Festival. Her second album Stay Tuned! was a call for revolution. Also\, It won the 2020 Juno Award for Vocal Jazz Album of the Year. Additionally\, it won the Félix prize for Best Jazz Album at the 2019 ADISQ Gala. Furthermore\, it was shortlisted for the Polaris Music Prize and featured among the nineteen best Canadian albums of 2019 by CBC. Further\, the record received rave reviews in prestigious publications worldwide. Finally\, it claimed the Number One spot for best-selling album in Quebec and Number Two in Canada. On stage\, whether in Canada or Europe\, Dominique’s magnetic presence captivates the audience\, leading them on a transcendent journey. \nIn 2023’s Our Roots Run Deep\, Fils-Aimé frames her latest installment with a loose\, dreamlike narrative structure. It won the 2024 Juno for Best Jazz Vocal Album. \nRecommended for fans of Erykah Badu\, Gregory Porter\, Lianne La Havas and José James. \n\n \n📸: Jetro Emilcar

SUMMARY:Barrington Levy
DESCRIPTION:  \nBarrington Levy is one of the great success stories of the 1980s. There\, he arrived on the dancehall scene and swiftly remodeled it in his own image. Although numerous DJs and vocalists would rise and fall during this decade\, Levy possessed staying power. Also\, he continued releasing massive hits well into the ’90s.  \nLevy was born in 1964 in Clarendon\, Jamaica. There\, as a youngster\, Barrington Levy formed the Mighty Multitude with his cousin Everton Dacres. They started off playing the sound systems and cut their first single\, “My Black Girl\,” in 1977. At age fourteen\, Levy broke out on his own the next year. Then\, he recorded his debut solo single\, “A Long Time Since We Don’t Have No Love.” While the single didn’t have an impact\, the teen’s dancehall appearances became eagerly awaited events.  \nIt was here where Levy met former singer-turned producer Junjo Lawes and New York-based producer Hyman “Jah Life” Wright. The pair took the youth into Channel One studio\, accompanied by the Roots Radics\, and recorded a clutch of cuts. The first releases were “Ah Yah We Deh\,” quickly followed by “Looking My Love\,” “Englishman\,” and “Wedding Ring Aside.” Success was immediate\, but it was the mighty “Collie Weed” that really cemented the teen’s hold on dancehall. Then\, “Shine Eye Girl” was a smash follow-up\, and the young Levy was now in great demand. A stream of singles followed. “Wicked Intention\,” “Jumpy Girl\,” a lovely version of Horace Andy’s “Skylarking\,” the humorous “Disco Music\,” “Reggae Music\,” and “Wicked Intention”. Levy joined forces with producer Alvin Ranglin for another sting of hits. “Never Tear My Love Apart\,” “Jah\,” “You Made Me So Happy\,” and “When You’re Young and in Love.” \nRecommended for fans of John Holt\, Buju Banton\, Yellowman and Steel Pulse.

SUMMARY:Naturally 7
DESCRIPTION:  \nNaturally 7 is unlike any vocal ensemble you’ve ever heard. No less than Quincy Jones has called them “the best a cappella group in the world”! \nThey are known worldwide for their extensive tours with Michael Bublé and as guests with Coldplay and Diana Ross. Moreover\, the New York-based septet is a band in the classic sense. They create the sounds of guitars\, bass\, horns\, keyboards\, drums\, and other instruments through the power of their voices. Here\, they call their signature style “vocal play.” \nThe band was founded in 1999 by brothers Roger and Warren Thomas. Then\, the group’s approach was cemented after wins in regional and national a cappella competitions. However\, the Thomases were faced with a decision. Should the group continue to just be voices only\, or part of a traditional band? Their solution: “why not both?” \nThe group released their acclaimed debut\, Non-Fiction\, in 2000 – a release blending gospel\, soul\, and pop. Then\, over the past quarter century\, Naturally 7 have recorded a dozen albums. Additionally\, they have appeared along with Ludacris on the title track of Quincy Jones’ 2010 release Q: Soul Bossa Nostra. Furthermore\, they have performed on stages worldwide with Stevie Wonder\, Quincy Jones\, Sarah Connor\, Lionel Richie\, The Roots\, and more. \nRecommended for fans of Take 6\, Raul Midon\, Boyz II Men and Anthony Hamilton. \n \n📸: Nina Sieber

SUMMARY:Sheila E. & the E-Train
DESCRIPTION:   \n2021 LATIN GRAMMY LIFETIME ACHIEVEMENT AWARD \nOne of life’s constants for Sheila E. comes down to a simple phrase: follow the beat. And her impeccable inner rhythm is the pulse behind a trailblazing career that still knows no bounds. \nFamily\, faith and music were guiding forces for Sheila E. growing up in the Bay Area. There\, she grew up with father\, percussionist dad Pete\, and uncles Coke Escovedo (Santana\, Azteca) and Dragons frontman Mario Escovedo. Further\, fellow Latin star Tito Puente was her godfather. In addition to being weaned on Latin jazz and Motown\, Sheila E. was exposed to a diverse array of Bay Area acts. \nIt’s no surprise that after such a music-immersive childhood\, the gifted world-class drummer began amassing an impressive string of credits. She has performed with her dad and with pioneering talents. For example\, George Duke\, Herbie Hancock\, Marvin Gaye\, Diana Ross\, Lionel Richie\, Prince\, Ringo Starr\, Gloria Estefan\, Beyonce and Jennifer Lopez. \nA fearless multi-instrumentalist\, Sheila is also the Grammy-nominated singer/songwriter behind the seminal hits “The Glamorous Life” and “A Love Bizarre.” This renaissance woman is equally proficient in percussion\, guitar\, and bass\, as well as an actress\, mentor and philanthropist. \nFollowing a Bay Area gig in the late ‘70s\, Sheila E. met Prince backstage. Their Purple Rain recording sessions morphed into launching her solo career that same year. These sessions also include her vocals on the 1984 classic “Erotic City”. She also performed at the 2012 Academy Awards with pop hitmaker Pharrell Williams and composer Hans Zimmer. Sheila E. was also among the roster of stars chosen to perform at the 2013 Kennedy Center Honors. There\, the honorees included artists Herbie Hancock\, Billy Joel and Carlos Santana. \nRecommended for Fans of Prince\, Chaka Khan\, Janet Jackson and Lenny Kravitz.

SUMMARY:Talib Kweli
DESCRIPTION:Kweli \nTalib Kweli is one of the most lyrically gifted\, socially aware and politically insightful rappers working today. The Brooklyn-based MC has earned his stripes with over twenty years of recording and performing. \n“I’m a touring artist. I’m an artist that’s internationally known. Not just a local artist at this point in my career. I’m cognizant of the fact that what I do is beyond where it started. I am trying to reach the apex of where I am now\, but without turning my back on or dismissing what I’ve done before.” \nAfter twenty years of releasing mesmerizing music\, Kweli stands as one of the world’s most talented and accomplished hip-hop artists. He works regularly with Yasiin Bey as one-half of Black Star\, and partners with producer Hi-Tek for Reflection Eternal. Then\, he collaborates with Kanye West\, Pharrell Williams\, Just Blaze\, J Dilla\, and Madlib. However\, his landmark solo material sets him apart. Here\, Kweli commands attention by delivering top-tier lyricism. Also\, he crafts captivating stories and can rhyme over virtually any type of instrumental. \nKweli founded Javotti Media in 2011\, which is self-defined as “a platform for independent thinkers and doers.” The company\, named after his paternal grandmother\, released his 2011 album\, Gutter Rainbows. Kweli has set out to make Javotti Media into a media powerhouse that releases music\, films and books. \nNikolai Paiva (NIKO IS) was born in Rio de Janeiro and moved to Florida at the age of seven. There\, Niko created a distinctive sound and style that gained him recognition as a songwriter\, witty lyricist\, and exceptional freestyler. NIKO IS is a conceptual idiom symbolizing the many personas and identities one experiences and is reflected through his albums. NIKO IS one of those musicians that restores your faith in the artistry of music. In an age where everyone is ‘trying’ to be different; Niko isn’t trying at all\, he just IS. \nRecommended for fans of De La Soul\, The Roots\, Yasiin Bey and Fugees.

The Brooklyn-based MC has earned his stripes with over twenty years of recording and performing. \n“I’m a touring artist. I’m an artist that’s internationally known.

SUMMARY:Salin
DESCRIPTION:  \nSalin is a Thai-born\, Canada-based drummer\, and a Juno-nominated producer and composer. Her current music explores the enchanting sounds of Northeast Thailand and marries it with the 70’s psychedelia of West Africa. Here\, she does this through the lens of modern soulful production. \nShe released her debut album Cosmic Island in 2021. Then\, she appeared at a variety of festivals\, including the beloved Montreal International Jazz Festival. \nThe following year\, Salin traveled to Northeastern Thailand. There\, the local culture\, music and instruments sparked an idea for her next project. She sought to bridge traditional Thai instruments and Isan music with the rhythm and groove of soul & funk and 70’s West African Afrobeat. Working with both local Thai as well as Canadian musicians\, Salin is bringing together elements of East and West. Salin released her second full-length album\, Rammana\, in April 2025. \nRammana is a groundbreaking album that merges afro-jazz\, funk and indigenous Thai instruments. Thus\, Salin coined the genre “Afro Thai Funk.” This unique blend highlights shared global music traditions and reminds us that music is a universal language. Here\, it transcends borders and unites us all in a shared experience of joy and creativity. Furthermore\, she is the only female drummer\, producer\, and composer promoting this genre. Thus\, Salin stands out as an innovative voice and a pioneer in the world and jazz music scenes. \nSalin ponders themes of identity\, spirituality\, and humanity (all paired with a dose of fun) through her music. Then\, she creates a unique sonic journey for her listeners. She divides her time between her Canada-based studio and stages across the globe. \nRecommended for fans of Butcher Brown\, Fela Kuti\, The Meters and Marquis Hill.

SUMMARY:Spyro Gyra
DESCRIPTION:  \nIn 2024\, Jay Beckenstein and band started its observation of the fiftieth anniversary of the band. What started as a diversion\, something that was just for fun (and twenty-five cents at the door) continues its evolution into 2025. It began inauspiciously when Beckenstein and a few musician friends in Buffalo\, NY organized a get together on their shared night off from working in bands that actually made money. It was a simple\, humble idea with a name that was likewise simple and humble\, “Tuesday Night Jazz Jam”.  \nFast forward fifty years and this jazz super-group has released over thirty albums\, garnering gold and platinum along the way. They’ve played over 10\,000 concerts on six continents. Further\, Spyro Gyra has maintained its standards of excellence. Thus\, these standards have sustained them on the “A list” of live attractions in jazz for fifty years. Renowned bass player Will Lee once referred to the ensemble as a “well-oiled road machine” as a tribute to their daunting schedule\, bringing their music to fans around the globe. \nFans of the band are familiar with the group’s rise to international prominence from humble beginnings in Buffalo\, New York. That’s when a few area musicians arranged for a weekly gig of playing less commercial music on everyone’s night off. Soon the word got around; the core group was joined by many musicians to come and have fun. And customers started showing up\, too\, prompting the club owner to press Beckenstein for a band name. Beckenstein offered up this late night\, tipsy answer\, “You can call it ‘spirogyra’”\, algae he had studied once. The next week\, he came back and there it was\, misspelling and all\, and so it began in 1974. \nRecommended for fans of Return to Forever\, Yellowjackets\, David Sanborn and Brecker Brothers. \n\n \n📸: David White
