SUMMARY:MC Lyte
DESCRIPTION:“hip-hop’s original female emcee.” – Grammy.com\n  \nLegendary lyricist\, DJ\, voice-over talent\, actress\, entertainer and icon\, MC Lyte is still making crowds move across the globe. MC Lyte first appeared on the scene in 1988 with her debut album Lyte As A Rock. At the tender age of 17 she began schooling other MCs in the art of rhyme. Since then\, she has proven that greatness always prevails with a total of ten albums to her credit. \nLyte is the first rap artist ever to perform at New York’s historic Carnegie Hall. Further\, she is the first female rapper to ever receive a gold single. Additionally\, she was the first female solo rapper ever nominated for a Grammy! There\, her inspiring 1993 classic anthem\, “Ruffneck\,” was nominated for a Grammy for Best Rap Single. Then\, her 2003 album Undaground Heat Vol.1\, hosted by Jamie Foxx\, garnered this rap legend her second Grammy nomination. Moreover\, the single “Ride Wit Me” also received a BET Award nomination for Best Female Rap Performance. In 2006\, MC Lyte became the first solo female rapper to be honored/inducted on VH1’s Hip-Hop Honors. \nLyte serves as a beautiful example that females can rock the mic just as well and oftentimes better than men. Also\, Lyte’s lyrical skills have also been tapped into by Hollywood. There\, she co-wrote and performed the television theme songs for Fox’s “Dark Angel” and BET’s “Holla.” \nRecommended for fans of Heavy D\, Big Daddy Kane\, Arrested Development and EPMD.

SUMMARY:Kenny Garrett
DESCRIPTION:“genre-blurring\, spiritually deep sounds” – Glide\n  \nKenny Garrett’s latest release\, 2021’s Sounds from the Ancestors\, is a multi-faceted album. The music\, however\, doesn’t lodge inside the tight confines of the jazz idiom. Here\, this is not surprising: the alto saxophonist and composer acknowledges Aretha Franklin and Marvin Gaye as significant touchstones. Miles Davis’s seminal LP\, On the Corner\, subverted its main guiding lights – James Brown\, Jimi Hendrix and Sly Stone. Then\, Davis crafted his own unique\, polyrhythmic\, groove-laden\, improv-heavy universe. Thus\, Sounds from the Ancestors occupies its own space with intellectual clarity\, sonic ingenuity and emotional heft. \n“The concept initially was about trying to get some of the musical sounds that I remembered as a kid growing up. Sounds that lift your spirit\, like John Coltrane’s “A Love Supreme”\, Aretha Franklin’s “Amazing Grace”\, Marvin Gaye’s “What’s Going On”. And the spiritual side of the church\,” Garrett explains. “When I started to think about them\, I realized it was the spirit from my ancestors.” \nIndeed\, Sounds from the Ancestors reflects the rich jazz\, R&B\, and gospel history of his hometown of Detroit. More important though\, it also reverberates with a modern cosmopolitan vibrancy. Notably the inclusion of music coming out of France\, Cuba\, Nigeria\, and Guadeloupe. \nGarrett is easily recognized as one of modern jazz’s brightest and most influential living masters. His illustrious career includes hallmark stints with Miles Davis\, Art Blakey and The Jazz Messengers\, Donald Byrd\, and Freddie Hubbard. Also\, Woody Shaw\, and the Duke Ellington Orchestra. Moreover\, he has enjoyed a heralded career as a solo artist that began more than thirty years ago. And with the marvelous Sounds from the Ancestors\, the Grammy-winning Garrett shows no signs of resting on his laurels. \nRecommended for fans of Joshua Redman\, Chris Potter\, Branford Marsalis and Miguel Zenón. \n📸: Hollis King

SUMMARY:Arrested Development
DESCRIPTION:“deeply thoughtful with a generous splash of wit… invincible” – BBC\n  \nArrested Development delivers onstage energy to thirsty audiences looking to quench their soul! Thirty years ago\, Arrested Development slammed the gangsta dominated world of hip hop with defiant lyrics of hope. The message worked\, as AD became the first\, and only\, hip-hop artist to receive the Best New Artist Grammy. Additionally\, the group also received a Grammy award for Best Rap Single for their anthemic prayer- like hit song\, “Tennessee”. The Rock and Roll Hall of Fame named it one of the 500 Songs That Shaped Rock and Roll. Also\, VH1 listed it in their 100 Greatest Songs of the 90’s. \nMoney came in\, but not for precious stones and big cars. Instead\, they gave back\, becoming the first African American artists to donate money to Nelson Mandela and the ANC. They used their voices and their status to the benefit of many underprivileged brothers and sisters around the world. \nWith the success of the single “Mr. Wendal”\, Arrested Development brought the issue of homelessness to the forefront. Then\, the group donated half of the royalty earnings from “Mr. Wendal” to the National Coalition of the Homeless. Awards\, chart success and accolades continued to follow. Their song “Revolution” was written for Spike Lee’s Malcolm X film\, X. There\, it would forever be associated with one of the most important Spike Lee joints. \nTheir album\, 3 Years\, 5 Months and 2 Days in the Life of…\, earned them two Grammy awards. Additionally\, they won two MTV awards\, a Soul Train Music Award\, and the NCAAP Image Award. Rolling Stone named them 1992’s Band of The Year\, while VH1 named them one of the greatest hip-hop artists of all time! \nRecommended for fans of De La Soul\, Digable Planets\, Yasiin Bey and A Tribe Called Quest.

DESCRIPTION:“always hunting for – and finding – the perfect note or harmony that lifts an old tune into the sublime” – Time\n  \nSix-Time Grammy Winners\nGospel Music Hall of Fame Inductees \nThe legendary Blind Boys of Alabama bring their transcendent harmonies and spiritual power. On 2026’s A Simple Man\, his milestone twentieth studio album\, the multi-platinum saxophonist delivers one of his most personal records. \nJames’ catalog has generated more than two billion on-demand streams in the United States. His honors include four Grammy nominations\, three NAACP Image Award nominations\, four RIAA Gold-certified records and a Soul Train Award. Also\, Billboard named him one of the Top Three Contemporary Jazz Artists of the 2000s. Additionally\, in 2024 he became the first artist to score twenty Number One singles on the Billboard Smooth Jazz chart. Further\, recent collaborations have also earned him two Top Ten hits at Adult R&B. \nFor James\, A Simple Man reflects a growing desire to strip away distraction and focus on what matters most. “As I’ve gotten older\, I’ve realized I don’t need a lot to make me happy\,”he says. “I love making music and playing my saxophone.” \nHere\, that clarity runs through the new album. Grammy-winning vocalist Ledisi\, acclaimed trumpeter Marquis Hill\, and legendary guitarist Larry Carlton all make guest appearances. \nJames’ R&B foundation runs deep. He turned professional at nineteen\, spending his formative years touring with Morris Day\, The Isley Brothers\, Teena Marie and others. Then\, James stepped forward with his 1992 debut\, Trust. Further\, more than three decades later\, he remains focused not on preserving a legacy\, but on continuing to grow. \nAnd that may be the clearest expression of A Simple Man. Here\, James is an artist who\, after more than three decades\, knows more clearly than ever what matters. \nRecommended for fans of Rick Braun\, Brian Culbertson\, Kirk Whalum and Jeffrey Osborne.

SUMMARY:Kindred the Family Soul
DESCRIPTION:“inspiring melds of soul\, R&B\, hip-hop\, funk\, pop… A mindblower.” – AllMusic\n  \nKindred the Family Soul is a Grammy-nominated adult contemporary R&B duo from Philadelphia consisting of husband-and-wife Fatin Dantzler and Aja Graydon. Big hit singles elude them\, but they maintain a strong following that appreciates their unwavering dedication to releasing relatable\, mature R&B. Also\, Dantzler and Graydon co-write most of their songs\, which are rooted in traditional soul and gospel.  \nDantzler and Graydon began as solo performers. Dantzler was born in Philadelphia and got his start in the music business writing songs for Pebbles and Bell Biv DeVoe. Graydon\, from Washington\, D.C.\, signed a solo deal at the age of 15. The two united and began writing songs\, but then married and started a family. However\, Dantzler went back to trying to make it on the local scene. He and Graydon began performing at the Black Lily club\, where they caught the attention of Jill Scott.   \nThey spent the next two years working on the debut Kindred the Family Soul album\, 2003’s Surrender to Love. It featured an impressive cast of collaborators\, including Scott\, string arranger Larry Gold\, Bilal\, King Britt\, and Jazmine Sullivan. Thus\, it was nominated for a Grammy in the category of Best R&B/Soul Album. 2005’s In This Life Together was inspired by Ruby Dee and Ossie Davis’ memoir of the same name. 2008’s The Arrival became their highest-charting title to that point. Here\, it reached number sixty-seven on the Billboard 200 and number seven on the R&B Albums chart.  \n2011’s Love Has No Recession features guests ranging from go-go pioneer Chuck Brown to relative newcomer BJ the Chicago Kid. Kindred’s sixth full-length\, 2016’s Legacy of Love\, climbed into the top fifteen of the Billboard R&B chart. \nRecommended for fans of Ledisi\, Eric Roberson\, Avery*Sunshine and Stokley.
