SUMMARY:Jim Messina
DESCRIPTION:“a bracing mix of folk- and country-rock” – All Music\n  \nJim Messina is an undisputed expert in the fine art of making hit music. His legacy of genius spans five decades\, three super-groups\, a vibrant solo career and scores of producing and engineering credits. \nWhile producing for Rock & Roll Hall of Famers Buffalo Springfield\, Messina ultimately joined the band as its bass player. When “the Springfield” disbanded in 1968\, Jim and fellow bandmate Richie Furay formed Poco. With Jim on lead guitar\, Poco defined a new musical genre\, country rock. After three successful albums\, Jim was ready for a change and left to return to his passion for producing music. \nIn November 1970\, Columbia Records asked Jim to work with an unknown Kenny Loggins. While helping Kenny get ready for a record and touring\, the two discovered that they worked well together. Then\, Jim agreed to sit in on Kenny’s first album. Kenny Loggins with Jim Messina Sittin’ In was released in November of 1971 and an accidental duo was formed. \nOver the next seven years\, Loggins & Messina released eight hit albums and had scores of hit songs. The duo sold over 16 million albums\, becoming one of rock’s most successful recording duos ever. However\, it was time for the duo to go their separate ways. \nHe embarked on a series of celebrated solo acoustic tours. Then\, Jim formed a band of acclaimed musicians who played with him at various points in his career. His latest release\, 2016’s In the Groove\, includes selected hits from all three of Jim’s previous bands. Also included are several of his solo works. \nTouring the country and playing sold-out shows\, Jim says that he’s enjoying discovering who he is\, where he’s been\, and\, most significantly\, where he’s going. \nRecommended for fans of Poco\, Richie Furay\, Kenny Loggins and Chicago.

SUMMARY:The Devon Allman Project:
DESCRIPTION:“Allman has found a way to extend his family’s amazing musical lineage on his own terms.” – Premier Guitar\n  \nDevon Allman’s sound lands right in the middle of some of the most soulful rock. Here\, Allman celebrates twenty years since the release of his first album and national tour. Additionally\, this special show will include material from each of Devon’s projects. These include The Allman Betts Band\, Devon Allman’s Blues Summit\, Royal Southern Brotherhood\, Honey Tribe\, and Devon Allman & Donavon Frankenreiter’s Rollers. Also\, they will play select Allman Brothers songs. \nDevon Allman gained wide recognition through projects such as Honey Tribe and later as co-founder of Royal Southern Brotherhood. There\, this supergroup-style ensemble showcased his soulful vocals and guitar work alongside other acclaimed musicians. Devon has built an independent career that honors the jam band and blues traditions. Meanwhile\, he maintains a modern\, polished tone and original songwriting voice. \nHere\, he has released multiple albums and toured extensively. Thus\, he earned a reputation for dynamic live shows\, strong musicianship\, and a style that blends blues\, rock\, soul\, and improvisational “jam” elements into a distinctive contemporary Southern sound. \n  \n \nSince 2018\, GA-20 has been at the forefront of a traditional Blues revival. The dynamic throwback trio have long been disciples of the place where traditional Blues\, Country and Rock ‘n’ Roll intersect. “We make records that we would want to listen to\,” says guitarist Matt Stubbs. “It’s our take on the song-based traditional electric Blues we love.” Stubbs\, along with guitarist & vocalist Cody Nilsen and drummer Josh Kiggans\, strive to bring traditional Blues to the front lines of the modern roots music scene. “The focus for us has always been on the story\, the melody\, and on creating a mood\,” Stubbs continues. “Traditional Country and Soul have all had these massive recent revivals. We want to be part of doing that for traditional Blues music.”  \nGA-20 has drawn inspiration for their old-school sounds from the music they love by artists such as Otis Rush\, J.B. Lenoir\, Howlin’ Wolf\, Junior Wells\, Hound Dog Taylor\, Earl Hooker\, Johnny ‘Guitar’ Watson and so many others. Performing with what feels like reckless abandon\, GA-20 brings a timeless immediacy to every song they play with a sound that continues to grow and evolve. The band uses vintage instruments and amps to produce their authentic sound\, and favours traditional recording techniques\, like recording live off the floor together in one room\, to help recreate that energy and sonic connection.  \nIn their short history\, GA-20 have been 3x #1 Billboard Blues chart toppers\, 4x Boston Music Award winners for Best Blues Act\, and have received multiple wins and nominations at the Blues Music Awards\, Blues Blast Awards\, New England Blues Awards\, and have ascended streaming and radio charts at home and internationally. Medium.com has appropriately declared\, “This is the kind of music that travels through time while taking from the era where it was born and turning it into something fresh. Dirty and raw…timeless and modern.” \nRecommended for fans of The Allman Brothers\, Tab Benoit\, Tedeschi Trucks Band and The Black Crowes. \n📸: Venla Shalin

SUMMARY:The Belfast Cowboys
DESCRIPTION:“conjures up the spirit and the songs of Ireland’s greatest export” – Chicago Tribune\n  \nThe Belfast Cowboys is a nine-piece\, horn-driven band from Minneapolis that specializes in the music of Van Morrison. Entering their third decade\, they are adept at mixing rock\, blues\, roots and soul sounds. Led by veteran songwriter/guitarist Terry Walsh\, the Cowboys have flourished in the renowned Minnesota music scene. They have consistently packed houses and wowed crowds since 2002. \nTerry Walsh got his start playing in various Twin Cities rock bands. He toured as Slim Dunlap’s bass player in 1997\, opening for Son Volt. In 2001 Terry hit upon the idea of forming a Van Morrison tribute band. Terry spent the rest of the year learning Van songs and building an all-star band. The band played their first show at the old 400 Bar on Saint Patrick’s Day 2002. \nMany musicians have played with the band\, but the ‘A’ team was soon established. It includes Dan Kowalke (guitar\, vocals\, Joe Baumgart (bass)\, Dave Kirby and Dave Haugen (drums\, backing vocals)\, Joe Loskota (keyboards\, backing vocals). The horn section includes Paul Gronert (sax)\, Matt Hanzelka (trombone)\, Tim Martin (trumpet)\, Vic Volare (sax\, flute). Bandleader Terry Walsh (lead vocals\, guitar\, harmonica\, piano). \nThe band has expanded its content over the years to include rock and soul covers. Terry’s own originals have become fan favorites. Now a beloved staple in Minnesota\, the 9-piece Belfast Cowboys averaged over 120 shows a year before the pandemic. The bar-tested troubadours are known for playing epic sets at their weekly Minneapolis gigs and drawing crowds to outdoor festivals. Occasionally they’ll venture beyond the Midwest to play Ireland\, Phoenix\, and New York’s Times Square. Once they opened for the band Chicago in front of 15\,000 people. \nRecommended for fans of Bruce Springsteen\, G.B. Leighton\, Tina and the B-Sides and Van Morrison.

SUMMARY:Peter Himmelman
DESCRIPTION:“One of rock’s most wildly imaginative performers.” – USA Today\n  \nTo a standard-bearer like Peter Himmelman\, writing\, recording\, and releasing new music is an essential part of living. For example\, former Rolling Stone senior editor Parke Puterburgh recently referenced his consistent output in Stereo Review. Himmelman “is on the same plane as Elvis Costello\, Graham Parker\, and Bruce Springsteen and nudging his way to ‘Dylanhood’”. \nHimmelman’s latest\, 2020’s Press On\, captures the immediacy of Himmelman’s new songs. Further\, it leaves his fervent vocals and guitar front and center. There\, the recording process for Press On took just under four days. However\, writing the songs\, refining them\, and deciding which of his more than forty new songs would make the final cut\, began over three years prior.  \nFor Himmelman\, songwriting has long been a process of self-discovery. “There are technical tricks one needs to master. But for me the real work lies in transcending the mechanics of songwriting\, and inhabiting that space beyond the rational mind\,” he says.  \nThe music on Press On is both emotionally and musically varied\, from R&B-flavored piano ballads to incessant New Orleans funk. At times\, Himmelman’s steely Telecaster is reminiscent of two of his principal influences — Howlin’ Wolf and John Lee Hooker. There\, it threads itself through lyrics that seem culled from our current moment. \n“Press On is tellingly titled and deeply considered\, a further example of Himmelman’s ability to go below the surface of any circumstance and find wisdom\, revelation\, and empowerment in the process.” — American Songwriter \nRecommended for fans of Martin Zellar\, Glen Phillips\, Tina Schlieske and John Wesley Harding.

SUMMARY:Soul Asylum (Acoustic) w/ Ivan Neville & Laurels String Quartet
DESCRIPTION:“melding rock intensity with sing-along melodies… gritty” – Glide\n  \nSoul Asylum formed more than forty years ago. Now\, they remain one of the most inspiring and hardworking bands in the rock scene. Here\, this is thanks to their raucous and emphatic combination of punk energy\, guitar-fueled firepower\, and rhythmic heft. Frontman Dave Pirner’s songs range from aggressive to heartfelt\, driven by lyrics that are a mix of real-life personal insights and fictional situations. Live\, the Minneapolis group possesses a formidable stage presence bristling with ragged energy and gritty\, locked-in grooves. Current members include drummer Michael Bland (Prince / Paul Westerberg)\, lead guitarist Ryan Smith and bassist Jeremy Tappero. \nInitially known as Loud Fast Rules\, Soul Asylum formed in the early 1980s\, when Pirner was still in high school. There\, they quickly became part of the celebrated Minneapolis music scene along with peers like The Replacements and Hüsker Dü. Soul Asylum entered the major-label world with 1988’s Hang Time. Then\, they released And the Horse They Rode In On\, an album produced by current Rolling Stones drummer Steve Jordan. The band broke through commercially with the double-platinum 1992 album Grave Dancers Union. Also\, this contained the Grammy-winning Billboard Top Five hit “Runaway Train” and Number One modern rock smash “Somebody to Shove.” After leaping to this mainstream success\, the band kept up the momentum with 1995’s platinum Let Your Dim Light Shine. This featured the hit “Misery\,” and led to appearances on the soundtracks of cult classics Chasing Amy and Clerks. \nIn recent years\, Soul Asylum reissued several of their earlier releases. Here\, this includes expanded and remastered editions of their first four original albums. \nRecommended for fans of The Replacements\, Goo Goo Dolls\, Semisonic and Counting Crows.

SUMMARY:Selwyn Birchwood
DESCRIPTION:“Lean yet mean and tough…lyrically and musically intense” — American Songwriter\n  \nAward-winning Florida musician Selwyn Birchwood is firmly rooted in the blues tradition. Here\, the young guitarist\, lap steel player\, songwriter and vocalist sets a course for the future of the blues with his visionary\, original music. Moreover\, Birchwood’s band features the interplay of his blistering guitar with Regi Oliver’s driving baritone sax. This creates a singular sound and style all his own\, that he calls “Electric Swamp Funkin’ Blues”. \nFurthermore\, it’s an intoxicating mix of deep blues\, psychedelic-tinged rock\, booty-shaking funk and sweet Southern soul. Then\, Birchwood plays and sings it with the fire-and-brimstone fervor of a revival tent preacher with a hellhound on his trail. No Depression says\, “Selwyn Birchwood reaches back in the blues tradition to launch something out of this world.” \nOn his latest release\, 2023’s Exorcist\, Birchwood delivers the most far-reaching\, musically adventurous album of his career. There\, soul-baring tracks all hit with lasting rhymes and unexpected rhythms. According to Blues Music Magazine\, “Selwyn Birchwood heralds a fresh\, exciting new direction in the blues. Toe-tapping\, hip-shaking\, joyful and inviting… expansive and focused\, exploratory and time-honored\, but always original.” \nLive\, Birchwood is a force of nature. Here\, his ability to win over an audience–any audience–is proven night after night on the bandstand. With his warm\, magnetic personality\, Birchwood is as down-to-earth as his music is thought-provoking and electrifying. His band feeds off his energy as he rips out memorable guitar licks with ease\, his soulful vocals firing up his fans. Then\, when he sits down to play his lap steel\, he takes the crowd to a whole other level. There\, the music exorcises any bad times and troubles. \nRecommended for fans of Shemekia Copeland\, Tinsley Ellis\, Vanessa Collier and Walter Trout.

DESCRIPTION:“exceptionally gifted… man\, he can play” – Blues Blast\n  \n“I want my songs to be heard and experienced\, not just listened to\,” says cliché-defying\, internationally beloved Chicago bluesman Toronzo Cannon. Cannon is on the cutting edge of today’s contemporary blues scene. Further\, critics hail him as one of the genre’s most creative artists. Fans love him for his richly detailed\, truth-telling original songs\, blistering\, inventive guitar work and impassioned vocals. \nHere\, his heroes inspire his sound. I am a Black man in America. These are NOT protest songs. I try to create honest\, common sense understanding with my songs.” \nCannon has earned ten Blues Music Award nominations. Further\, as his fan base expands\, so do his friendships with famous musicians. Gary Clark\, Jr. declared\, “Toronzo is a beast. He lights the room up.” Also\, Joe Bonamassa rightly pronounced\, “Toronzo’s a great guitar player\, excellent vocalist and an amazing personality.” \nRecommended for fans of Lonnie Brooks\, Walter Trout\, Bernard Allison and Corey Stevens.

SUMMARY:Blood\, Sweat & Tears
DESCRIPTION:“musical mixture of classical\, jazz\, and rock” – AllMusic\n  \nNo one can argue Blood\, Sweat & Tears invented a new style of music. BS&T is not the first band to ever use a horn section\, but they are the first to fuse it with rock\, jazz\, and some blues thrown in for good measure. \nThe first version of the band\, in the late sixties\, would practice in a loft in New York’s Greenwich Village. Crowds would gather on the street below and applaud between songs! Founding member and drummer Bobby Colomby knew they had hit on something special. Since then\, the band has never stopped touring for over fifty years. \nThe first Blood\, Sweat & Tears album\, Child is Father to the Man\, was released to little fanfare. After the band member changes (notably replacing the lead singer)\, the second album\, Blood Sweat & Tears\, was a success. It rose to the top of the charts for seven weeks and yielded three top 5 singles. The album received the Grammy for Album of the Year in 1970\, beating out the Beatles’ Abbey Road. That album went on to earn quadruple Platinum status\, with sales of well over 4 million units and induction into the Grammy Hall of Fame. In total\, the band has received ten Grammy nominations\, winning three.  \nBlood Sweat & Tears performed on Sunday\, August 17\, 1969\, at Woodstock\, the same day as Jimi Hendrix and other great bands. \nBlood Sweat & Tears has had many configurations over its fifty-plus years of touring but one thing for sure is that the music is timeless\, and fans are never disappointed. BS&T tours with the greatest musicians available\, stars in their own right (most coming off major tours with other artists).  \nTo this day Bobby Colomby still hand-picks the musicians for every tour. Colomby still uses the same theory: “Great Musicians Make Great Music”. \nRecommended for fans of Chicago\, Tower of Power\, Traffic and Steely Dan.

SUMMARY:Anders Osborne
DESCRIPTION:“mix of Neil Young meets Jackson Browne style” – Glide\n  \nOn his seventeenth album\, singer-songwriter Anders Osborne describes 2024’s Picasso’s Villa\, “a condensed story about living in America between 2018-2021. The fears\, confusion\, deep joy and peace achieved through true friendship\, family\, community\, hours of meditation and detachment from ego.”  \nFurther\, Osborne has been in a twelve-step program for fifteen years. He explains\, “The biggest change in getting sober was the focus on meditation and prayer\, just looking more inward. When I’m sleeping in 140 different beds a year\, eating unhealthy foods\, meditation is what keeps me centered. Holding myself in that sacred space for a while is what makes it possible for me to do all this.” \nAfter living and performing in New Orleans for almost four decades\, Osborne has become a fixture of that musical community. Thus\, Guitar Player called him “the poet laureate of Louisiana’s fertile roots music scene.” Also\, New Orleans’ Gambit Weekly honored Osborne as Entertainer of The Year. Additionally\, OffBeat named him the Crescent City’s Best Guitarist on three occasions\, and the Best Songwriter twice. He has appeared at Jazz Fest for over thirty-five years. \nIn addition to his solo shows\, Osborne performed with the North Mississippi All-Stars\, Toots and the Maytals\, and John Scofield. Also\, The Meters\, Derek Trucks\, Warren Haynes\, Stanton Moore\, Phil Lesh\, Jackie Greene\, Bonnie Raitt\, Dr. John\, and Taj Mahal. SUMMARY:Stanley Jordan
DESCRIPTION:“a virtuosic tour de force” – L.A. Times\n  \nGuitar virtuoso Stanley Jordan’s career took flight in 1985 with commercial and critical acclaim. Since then\, he has consistently displayed a chameleonic musical persona of openness\, imagination\, versatility and maverick daring. Here\, he displays bold reinventions of classical masterpieces or soulful explorations through pop-rock hits. Also\, blazing straight ahead jazz forays and ultramodern improvisational works\, solo or with a group. Thus\, Jordan can always be counted on to take listeners on breathless journeys into the unexpected. \n“Jordan’s revolutionary approach to the instrument [is] shocking.” – All Music\nKey to Jordan’s fast-track acclaim is his mastery of a special technique on the guitar’s fretboard. Instead of conventional strumming and picking\, Jordan’s innovative “touch technique” is an advanced form of two-handed tapping. While a handful of others use similar techniques\, Stanley’s fluid\, multi-layered textures and sheer virtuosity raise the bar for excellence. However\, his technique\, though impressive\, is always a means to a musical end. \n”To see and hear Stanley Jordan play guitar is to witness higher-level instrumental performance.” — Roanoke Times\nHis music is imbued with a warmth and sensitivity that has captured the imagination of listeners worldwide. A classically trained pianist before playing guitar\, Jordan wanted greater freedom in voicing chords on his guitar. Then\, he applied piano principles to do so. Furthermore\, Jordan’s touch technique allows the guitarist to play melody and chords simultaneously with an unprecedented level of independence. It also allows Jordan to play simultaneously on two different guitars\, or even on guitar and piano. \nJordan has received four Grammy nominations. Additionally\, his 2011 album Friends was nominated for an NAACP Image Award. L.A. Times jazz critic Leonard Feather wrote\, “Genius is a word often tossed around in musical circles. But it has been rightfully applied to Stanley Jordan.” \nRecommended for fans of Pat Metheny\, Al Di Meola\, Larry Coryell and John McLaughlin.

SUMMARY:Ms. Lisa Fischer & Grand Baton
DESCRIPTION:“Lisa Fischer in concert is addictive… transcendent” – Star Tribune\n  \nWhen the iconic Ms. Lisa Fischer sings\, she brings a joyous sense of discovery to every setting. The Grammy and Oscar-winning powerhouse vocalist is at the peak of her powers\, blazing her own path. Additionally\, she carries traces of the legendary stars she’s collaborated with over four decades. However\, Fischer is a constellation in her own right\, singing with what Keith Richards describes as “amazing power\, energy\, and projection”. Also\, he should know: Fischer toured with the Rolling Stones for twenty-six years. \nFinally\, Fischer has taken her rightful place among America’s greatest vocalists. She truly does it all: she can stretch out in an intimate duo with jazz piano maestro Taylor Eigsti. Then\, she raises the roof with the spiritually charged Gullah funk combo Ranky Tanky. She creates luminous soundscapes onstage with the dancers of Alonzo King LINES Ballet. Also\, she follows her uninhibited muse with her trio Grand Baton and their organic fusion of Caribbean psychedelic soul and jazzy progressive rock. “A talent that comes once in a lifetime\,” declares Roberta Flack. “Like Haley’s Comet\, her brilliance is dazzling and brings light into the world.”  \nAt first glance Fischer might seem like a paradox. She spent much of her career exulting in the role of the ultimate team player as an elite backup singer. She shared the stage with Luther Vandross\, the Rolling Stones\, Sting\, Tina Turner\, and Nine Inch Nails. But when her story was featured in the Oscar-winning 2013 documentary 20 Feet From Stardom\, Fischer experienced a course-changing epiphany. “I was always looking at the next tour\, the next gig\,” she said. “The film gave me a chance to take stock and realize I could start defining my own path.” \nRecommended for fans of Patti LaBelle\, Roberta Flack\, Tina Turner and Luther Vandross. \n📸: Christina Alonso
