SUMMARY:Leo Kottke: Live at The Ordway
DESCRIPTION:“wild\, highly technical blend of bluegrass\, folk\, and jazz and classical” – Rolling Stone\n  \nProlific guitarist Leo Kottke boasts an impressive body of work and an unrivaled fingerpicking style. His forty-plus albums over four decades have earned him two Grammy nominations and widespread acclaim. Drawing inspiration from folk\, blues and jazz\, he plays his signature six-string and twelve-string guitars with effortless aptitude\, a big heart and an even bigger grin.  \nKottke was born in Athens\, Georgia\, but left town after a year and a half. Raised in twelve different states\, he absorbed a variety of musical influences as a child. There\, he flirted with both violin and trombone\, before abandoning Stravinsky for the guitar at age eleven. \nHe added a love for the country blues of Mississippi John Hurt to the music of John Philip Sousa and Preston Epps. Then\, Kottke joined the Navy underage\, to be underwater\, and eventually lost some hearing shooting at lightbulbs in the Atlantic. He served on the USS Halfbeak\, a diesel submarine. \nDischarged in 1964\, he settled in the Twin Cities area and became a fixture at Minneapolis’ Scholar Coffeehouse. Further\, this venue had been home to Bob Dylan and John Koerner. \nKottke has been awarded two Grammy nominations. Also\, a Doctorate in Music Performance by the Peck School of Music at the U of Wisconsin\, Milwaukee. He also received a Certificate of Significant Achievement in Not Playing the Trombone from the U of Texas at Brownsville with Texas Southmost College. \nCellist Olivia Diercks and violinist Karla Peters are The OK Factor. This new-classical crossover duo has one word to describe their musical connection: lucky. Here\, the almost telepathic way they respond to one another is palpable to the audiences they capture during performances. Moreover\, their spontaneity and joy shine through. MPR calls them “genre-bending” and Wausau Pilot & Review hails their “pure magic”. \n“influences in Americana and Irish/Gaelic fiddle styles\, but with the virtuosity of classical performers” – MPR \nRecommended for fans of John Fahey\, Ry Cooder\, Michael Hedges and Peter Lang.

SUMMARY:The Klezmatics - Happy Joyous Hanukkah
DESCRIPTION:“catchy\, pulse-quickening party tunes and heart-warming melodies” – Jewish Chronicle\n  \nThis December\, The Klezmatics — the world’s most celebrated klezmer band — return with their beloved Happy Joyous Hanukkah Tour. As candles are lit across the country\, The Klezmatics honor both Jewish tradition and bold musical reinvention. \nFor nearly forty years\, The Klezmatics have been transforming klezmer from nostalgic memory into a living\, breathing\, revolutionary art form. And nowhere is that spirit more alive than in their legendary collaboration with Woody Guthrie. There\, his long-lost Hanukkah lyrics were brought to life in the band’s iconic 2006 album Happy Joyous Hanukkah. \nIn 2025\, that album will be reissued in a beautifully remastered vinyl edition\, just in time for the holiday season. Audiences will once again dance to Guthrie/Klezmatics favorites like “Hanuka Gelt\,” “Spin Dreydl Spin\,” and “Happy Joyous Hanuka”. Here\, the band brings the songs back to the stage — full of warmth\, humor\, and Yiddish soul. \nBut this year’s tour isn’t only about tradition — it’s also about what comes next. The Klezmatics will release their fourteenth studio album\, The New York Sessions\, in early 2026. Thus\, this Hanukkah tour will feature exclusive live premieres of brand-new material. These new songs continue the band’s legacy of addressing contemporary themes — from migration and solidarity to joy\, resistance\, and renewal. Moreover\, they explore these themes through the ecstatic power of Yiddish-rooted music. \nThe result is a Hanukkah concert like no other: a celebration of light in dark times. Here\, ancient stories meet new melodies\, and community is built through dance\, laughter\, and shared song. \nWhether you’ve been following The Klezmatics for decades or you’re lighting your first menorah\, this tour is for you. \nRecommended for fans of Chava Alberstein\, Klezmerson\, Burning Bush and Daniel Kahn.

Here\, they play the timeless music of Vince Guaraldi\, including “Christmas Time Is Here“ and “Linus and Lucy.” \nWith energy and chops to burn\, The Travis Anderson Trio bring fresh interpretations to standards and more – from Chopin to Mario Bros – they swing like there’s no tomorrow while saluting the great trios of yesterday. \nTravis Anderson has been delighting audiences with his dazzling piano technique and inventive arrangements since 2003. Additionally\, he has taken his unique piano style all over the metro area and beyond. \nSteve Pikal is one of the most in-demand bassists in the region. Adept at many genres\, his joyous stage presence and buoyant playing add an exciting element to every show. \nVersatile\, dynamic\, and hard-swinging\, Nathan Norman is a first-call drummer in the Twin Cities. Also\, he has collaborated with many of the area’s finest artists\, including Bruce Henry\, Debbie Duncan\, Charmin Michelle\, and more. \nA Charlie Brown Christmas is the Emmy and Peabody award-winning story written by St. Paul’s own Charles M. The Christmas special marked the first time Schulz’s classic characters made the jump from the newspaper page to animation. Moreover\, the soundtrack being provided by a jazz trio rather than full orchestra\, originally a budget-conscious decision\, proved to be an inspired choice. Here\, Guaraldi’s songs are as important to the show’s enduring success as the characters themselves. \nRecommended for fans of Oscar Peterson\, George Gershwin\, Art Tatum and Vince Guaraldi.

Schulz. This classic has warmed the hearts of millions of fans since it first aired on television nearly sixty years ago.

SUMMARY:Mark O'Connor's Appalachian Christmas
DESCRIPTION:“a national treasure” – Wynton Marsalis\n  \nThree-time Grammy winning composer and fiddler Mark O’Connor has created several arrangements of Christmas classics. Here\, he fashions a wondrous mixture of both instrumental and vocal music in bluegrass and other American music genres. The show features fresh takes on traditional songs with a few original compositions included. His renditions are playful and joyous\, but can be strikingly earnest too. Mark’s touring ensemble includes his wife Maggie O’Connor on fiddle and vocals. Additionally\, he will bring a variety of guest musicians on each tour. \nHaving toured An Appalachian Christmas nine consecutive years\, O’Connor and his ensemble have a dynamic energy on stage. Then\, they bring their individual expertise to holiday themes and classics in the most delightful and musically satisfying way! \n“…the reason we were all there was Mark O’Connor\, in all his lyrical perfection. There is no more aching line in contemporary American music than the melody in his Appalachia Waltz. Also\, the joy of his mandolin duet with his son in Macedonia\, a song Mark wrote years ago\, was pure delight. O’Connor is a composer and arranger of the highest order\, creating intriguing harmonies and rhythms in recognizable folk music. \nHe elevates a music with humble beginnings to impeccable elegance\, creating a whole different category. While the instrumentation is traditional in country music\, his deft treatment of the songs and choice of performers brings out unexpected elements. He’s more than a performer; he’s a suitor to the music\, to the instruments\, a passionate devotee of traditional forms and tools. And\, his adoration is evident in every note he writes and every chord he plays.”  by Meg Currell EDGE Media Network Contributor \nRecommended for fans of Sam Bush\, Yo-Yo Ma\, Nickel Creek and Edgar Meyer.

SUMMARY:Karrin Allyson - Wintry Mix
DESCRIPTION:“Everything she sings seems to rise from a smile… transparent purity” – Downbeat\n  \nFew American jazz singers have had as long and fruitful a relationship with Brazilian music as Karrin Allyson. Her early albums included such classics as “Corcovado” and “One Note Samba”. Then\, her 1999 recording From Paris to Rio split the difference between songs from those musical cities. 2008’s Imagina: Songs of Brazil raised the ante on Rio. Now\, here’s another all-Brazilian outing\, 2024’s A Kiss for Brazil\, featuring the great Bahian singer-guitarist Rosa Passos on two songs.  \nWhat’s remarkable about Allyson’s ongoing foray into these sounds is she has never recorded the same song twice. The song list for A Kiss for Brazil includes Luiz Bonfá’s “Manhã de Carnaval” and Antonio Carlos Jobim’s “Wave”. However\, you may wonder why it has taken her so long to get to those oft-performed gems. The answer\, for starters\, is that there’s a bottomless pool of great Brazilian songs to record. Also\, Allyson has engaged in many other pursuits as one of jazz’s most popular and wide-ranging vocalists.  \nNominated for five Grammys\, she has explored bop and blues\, pop and Great American standards\, and written her own songs. Her highly regarded 2001 album Ballads: Remembering John Coltrane beautifully rendered the songs on Trane’s 1963 classic. Her 2004 album\, Wild for You\, is a collection of singer-songwriter pop tunes— “my first love”. Here\, Allyson performs songs by Joni Mitchell\, Cat Stevens\, Carole King\, and Carly Simon. On 2015’s Many a New Day\, she paid tribute to Rodgers and Hammerstein alongsode pianist Kenny Barron.  \nMore recently\, she starred in the ambitious 2019 concept recording\, Shoulder to Shoulder: Centennial Tribute to Women’s Suffrage. This was a collection of Suffragist Era songs (plus two of hers). \nRecommended for fans of Jane Monheit\, Stacey Kent\, Madeleine Peyroux and Diana Krall.

SUMMARY:Preservation Hall Jazz Band Presents: A Creole Christmas
DESCRIPTION:“passionate… on a timely mission to bring joy to the world.” – All About Jazz\n  \nCelebrate the season as the incomparable Preservation Hall Jazz Band takes the stage with Creole Christmas. This memorable performance will feature New Orleans classics as well as beloved holiday selections with a twist. Founded in 1963\, the band takes its name from Preservation Hall\, the humble but historic French Quarter music venue. There\, Preservation Hall is dedicated to keeping the past and future of jazz alive. \nThroughout its history\, New Orleans has been the point at which sounds and cultures from around the world converge. Further\, they mingle\, resurface\, and are transformed by the Crescent City’s inimitable spirit and joie de vivre. Nowhere is that idea more vividly embodied than in the Preservation Hall Jazz Band. Here\, they have held the torch of New Orleans music aloft for more than 60 years. Moreover\, they carry it enthusiastically forward as a reminder that the history they were founded to preserve is a vibrant\, living history.  \nPHJB marches that tradition forward by tapping into a sonic continuum that stretches back to the city’s Afro-Cuban roots. They look back to the Afrobeat of Fela Kuti and the Fire Music of Pharoah Sanders and John Coltrane. Then\, they look forward to cutting-edge artists with whom the PHJB have shared festival stages from Coachella to Newport. They have shared the stage with legends like Stevie Wonder\, Elvis Costello and the Grateful Dead. Also\, modern giants The Foo Fighters\, My Morning Jacket\, Arcade Fire and the Black Keys. \nRecommended for fans of Kermit Ruffins\, Tuba Skinny\, Pokey LaFarge and Davina and The Vagabonds.

SUMMARY:A Swingin’ Christmas w/ the Andrew Walesch Big Band
DESCRIPTION:“Fresh and classic at the same time” – Star Tribune\n  \nThere’s no better place to be right before Christmas than at Dakota with Andrew Walesch and his eighteen-piece big band. Ring in the holidays with the songs of Bennett\, Sinatra\, Bublé\, Basie\, and more! \nLike a good many before him\, singer and pianist Andrew Walesch manages to encapsulate the sophistication of a cosmopolite and the self-effacing charm of a country boy. Leading his all-star big band\, showman Andrew Walesch kidnaps the Blue Eyes tradition and makes it his own in his jazz-bent Sinatra revue. Thus\, Walesch is a traditionalist and an iconoclast rolled into one. \nWhether composing and arranging or appearing in settings ranging from solo artist to big band\, this St. Cloud\, MN native is as respectful of his predecessors as he is ready to take a leap into the unknown and chart a new course. Additionally\, Andrew routinely jams venues all over the Midwest and beyond with a uniquely cross-generational audience. Walesch’s fans include jazz enthusiasts of a certain age\, as well as a younger crowd compelled by his down-home insouciance. Here\, all are drawn in by the knowing irreverence of a tried-and-true American nightclub entertainer.  \n“Although they are my idols\, I don’t attempt to imitate the great pop and jazz artists of the 50s and ’60s\,” says Andrew. “But I go for broke when we do our shows – vocally and musically!” \nHis vocal and piano chops\, along with his keen sensibility to find and interpret a great lyric\, have led to some great opportunities for Walesch. In 2023\, Andrew accepted the position of artistic director of the MIM Music Theater in Phoenix\, Arizona where he now resides.   \nRecommended for fans of Tony Bennett\, Frank Sinatra\, Michael Bublé and Bing Crosby.
