SUMMARY:Orianthi
DESCRIPTION:“effortless shredder… special and transcendent” – Blues Rock Review\n  \nOrianthi (Orianthi Panagaris) looks as much like a rock star as she does a supermodel. But it’s her extraordinary guitar chops that turn the most heads. She began playing professionally when she was thirteen years old. Since then\, she has performed and/or toured with Carlos Santana\, Steve Vai\, Alice Cooper\, Richie Sambora and Dave Stewart. Furthermore\, she was hired by Michael Jackson for his “This Is It Tour” before his untimely death. Orianthi was a member of the supergroup Hollywood Vampires (Cooper\, Joe Perry\, Johnny Depp and Tommy Henriksen). \nOrianthi’s debut album\, Violet Journey\, was released in 2005 and she has issued five solo albums to date. She was featured accompanying Carrie Underwood during a Grammy Awards telecast\, and performed on American Idol. Also\, she appears in Michael Jackson’s documentary concert film\, This Is It. Elle magazine named Orianthi one of the 12 Greatest Female Electric Guitarists. Additionally\, she won the 2010 Breakthrough Guitarist of the Year award from Guitar International magazine. \nShe released her latest recording\, Some Kind of Feeling\, in June 2025. The first single\, “First Time Blues\,” features Joe Bonamassa on guitar. Here\, she burns up the tune with her impassioned vocals and blazing guitar licks. She and Bonamassa have played together often\, but this marks their first recording together.  \nOrianthi explains: “‘First Time Blues’ is about that feeling of when you first feel brokenhearted. It doesn’t change throughout life if you really have the strength to love and be all-in every time. I’m guilty of that… throwing myself into the fire just to get burned\, heal\, then get burned again…or not. You never know. Love is a gamble!” \nRecommended for fans of Joe Bonamassa\, Ana Popovic\, Bernard Allison and Nita Strauss.

SUMMARY:Lucia Sarmiento
DESCRIPTION:“a modern jazz sound unbound by geography\, genre\, or convention” – Jazz World\n  \nOn her remarkable debut album\, 2025’s Escape\, Peruvian-American saxophonist/composer Lucia Sarmiento emerges as a rising star in modern jazz. Here\, she delivers playful yet intricate melodies. “When I play the saxophone\, I love that feeling of danger\,” says Sarmiento. With a powerful tenor sound and an effervescent personality\, she explains\, “I’m drawn to music filled with intensity and risk that captures every fiber of your being in the moment; that’s why I love jazz.” \nLucia has performed on sold-out stages with international pop stars Pitbull and Karol G. Additionally\, she has also headlined jazz festivals under her own name. Her fearless approach to music and her commitment to crafting bold\, textured compositions make her an exciting new jazz voice. \n“Minneapolis raised me musically\,” she reflects. “It’s a smaller city compared to LA or NYC\, but the music scene is vibrant\, steeped in the legacy of Prince. I began performing with Prince’s long-time collaborators and Weather Report’s legendary drummer Eric Gravatt right out of college. I got to explore every genre from Minneapolis funk to brass band\, and from Motown to free jazz. What was really important was that I came to develop my own sound. At first\, it wasn’t easy to keep up with the loud drums\, distorted guitars and very experienced funk players\, so I spent lots of time working on my sound and time. I also admire how Michael Brecker\, Bob Mintzer\, and Chris Potter play with so much strength and a sense of urgency—that’s how I want to play.” \nIn recent years\, Lucia has gained a social media following of over 100k+ people. Also\, she has released educational videos in Spanish and English that provide a global perspective on jazz and saxophone. \nRecommended for fans of Chris Potter\, Michael Brecker\, Bob Mintzer and Wayne Shorter.

SUMMARY:Tom Rush
DESCRIPTION:“one of my main influences” – James Taylor\n  \nTom Rush is a gifted musician and performer whose shows offer a musical celebration. Here\, he leads a journey into the tradition and spectrum of what music has been\, can be\, and will become. His distinctive guitar style\, wry humor and warm\, expressive voice have made him a legend to audiences around the world. His shows are filled with the rib-aching laughter of terrific storytelling\, the sweet melancholy of ballads\, and the passion of gritty blues. \nNow celebrating five decades of touring\, Tom thrills audiences here and abroad with his classic hits. These include “No Regrets”\, “Circle Game”\, “Remember Song”\, “Urge for Going” and “Merrimack County”. \nRush’s impact on the American music scene has been profound. He helped shape the folk revival in the 1960s and the renaissance of the ’80s and ’90s. James Taylor told Rolling Stone\, “Tom was not only one of my early heroes but also one of my main influences.” Country music star Garth Brooks has credited Rush with being one of his top five musical influences. Rush has long championed emerging artists. His early recordings introduced the world to the work of Joni Mitchell\, Jackson Browne and James Taylor. Also\, his more recent Club 47 concerts brought artists such as Nanci Griffith and Shawn Colvin to wider audiences when they were just beginning to build their own reputations. \nToday\, Tom Rush lives in Massachusetts when he’s not touring. His voice has grown even richer and more melodic. Additionally\, his music\, like a fine wine\, has matured and ripened in the blending of traditional and modern influences. Also\, he’s written several new songs. He’s doing what he loves\, and what audiences love him for: knitting together the musical traditions and talents of our times. \nRecommended for fans of Joni Mitchell\, Jackson Browne\, Arlo Guthrie and John Sebastian.

SUMMARY:Southside Aces: A Night in New Orleans
DESCRIPTION:“flawlessly replicate the sound of classic New Orleans” — Prairie Uprising\n  \nFor over two decades\, Southside Aces have been playing the repertoire of the Jazz Age greats and beyond. Here\, they play the early New Orleans of Jelly Roll Morton and the Chicago joys of Louis Armstrong. The evocative compositions of the young Duke Ellington to the barrel house sounds of Preservation Hall. Even the early rock and roll of Fats Domino! Their belief in the contemporary vitality of New Orleans music can be heard in their eighth album\, 2022’s Minneapolis Bump. Here\, this album contains fifteen originals in the traditional style. The Aces will release two more albums in 2026\, including Les Oignons\, featuring the music of Sidney Bechet. You hear it all when you’re in front of the Aces. Moreover\, treat yourself to a century’s worth of New Orleans jazz. \nIn New Orleans\, the jazz tradition thrives off a wide array of styles. Here\, the Aces possess a diverse repertoire\, with a roll call that includes jazz giants. For example\, Louis Armstrong\, Jelly Roll Morton\, Hoagy Carmichael\, Duke Ellington\, and Bix Beiderbecke. Additionally\, Crescent City classics like “Bourbon Street Parade”\, “Just A Closer Walk With Thee”\, and “St. James Infirmary”. Also\, they cover the funky rhythms of brass band powerhouses like “Mardi Gras in New Orleans” and “Palm Court Strut”! \n“Some 1500 miles from New Orleans and the Mardi Gras\, and what do you think? It’s bouncing around the Mississippi River up here close to the Northern Star.” — Leigh Kamman\, The Jazz Image \n“The performers are virtuosi and flawlessly replicate the sound of classic New Orleans… The concert was wonderful and demonstrates the continued vitality of this sort of music.” — John Beckmann\, Prairie Uprising \nRecommended for fans of Preservation Hall Jazz Band\, Tuba Skinny\, Louis Armstrong and Fats Waller. \n📸: Paul Udstrand

SUMMARY:Kindred the Family Soul
DESCRIPTION:“inspiring melds of soul\, R&B\, hip-hop\, funk\, pop… A mindblower.” – AllMusic\n  \nKindred the Family Soul is a Grammy-nominated adult contemporary R&B duo from Philadelphia consisting of husband-and-wife Fatin Dantzler and Aja Graydon. Big hit singles elude them\, but they maintain a strong following that appreciates their unwavering dedication to releasing relatable\, mature R&B. Also\, Dantzler and Graydon co-write most of their songs\, which are rooted in traditional soul and gospel.  \nDantzler and Graydon began as solo performers. Dantzler was born in Philadelphia and got his start in the music business writing songs for Pebbles and Bell Biv DeVoe. Graydon\, from Washington\, D.C.\, signed a solo deal at the age of 15. The two united and began writing songs\, but then married and started a family. However\, Dantzler went back to trying to make it on the local scene. He and Graydon began performing at the Black Lily club\, where they caught the attention of Jill Scott.   \nThey spent the next two years working on the debut Kindred the Family Soul album\, 2003’s Surrender to Love. It featured an impressive cast of collaborators\, including Scott\, string arranger Larry Gold\, Bilal\, King Britt\, and Jazmine Sullivan. Thus\, it was nominated for a Grammy in the category of Best R&B/Soul Album. 2005’s In This Life Together was inspired by Ruby Dee and Ossie Davis’ memoir of the same name. 2008’s The Arrival became their highest-charting title to that point. Here\, it reached number sixty-seven on the Billboard 200 and number seven on the R&B Albums chart.  \n2011’s Love Has No Recession features guests ranging from go-go pioneer Chuck Brown to relative newcomer BJ the Chicago Kid. Kindred’s sixth full-length\, 2016’s Legacy of Love\, climbed into the top fifteen of the Billboard R&B chart. \nRecommended for fans of Jill Scott\, Sade\, Mary J. Blige and Luther Vandross.

SUMMARY:Davina and The Vagabonds
DESCRIPTION:“Davina and the Vagabonds combat heartache with sugar and sass.” – Downbeat\n  \nDavina Sowers and the Vagabonds have created a stir on the national music scene. Their high-energy live shows feature level-A musicianship\, sharp-dressed professionalism and Sowers’ commanding stage presence. Also\, their influences range from Fats Domino and the Preservation Hall Jazz Band to Aretha Franklin and Tom Waits. Moreover\, the band is converting audiences one show at a time\, from Vancouver to Miami and across Europe. \nMuch like the music\, the story spurns era\, expectation and classification. The often unbelievable\, sometimes harrowing\, and wholly inspiring journey of Davina Sowers gave birth to her eponymous band in 2004. As the tale goes\, she grew up in the economically depressed Allegheny town of Altoona\, PA. She now describes the town as “awesome in the industrial era\, but horrible for high school.” Then\, she was adopted by her stepfather when he was in his 80s; he passed when she was just 13. Through him and his Edison phonograph\, she first heard the music that would start her journey. For example\, The Ink Spots\, Sidney Bechet\, Louis Armstrong\, Louis Prima\, Sister Rosetta Tharpe and many others. “Great man. He was my angel and still is\,” she says. \nOn her own\, she vividly recalls hours in front of the record player at home. There\, she religiously spun Led Zeppelin\, Black Sabbath and Simon and Garfunkel records belonging to her folk singer mom. \nTo this day\, Davina still refers to music as “my first and eternal love.” Despite early dalliances with classical piano and guitar\, she developed a heavy drug habit in high school. Further\, this morphed into heroin dependency\, left her homeless\, sent her in and out of jail and brought on all manner of trouble. Kicking dope on the streets\, she “got clean\, started the band and worked [her] ass off every day since.” \nRecommended for fans of Pokey LaFarge\, Preservation Hall Jazz Band\, The Hot Sardines and Squirrel Nut Zippers.

SUMMARY:Preener's Eve w/The New Standards
DESCRIPTION:“The DNA of the band and its members has its feet firmly rooted into punk/pop culture.” – New York Times\n  \nMinnesota stalwarts The New Standards create an intriguing blend of everything from classic cabaret to punk rock. Here\, they blend the freedom of jazz with  the soul of pop and rock. They make it work through offbeat humor and sheer musicianship. The instrumentation is simple: John Munson of Trip Shakespeare/Semisonic fame on bass; Chan Poling\, founder of the new-wave group The Suburbs on piano; and Steve Roehm on vibes. Chan and John split the singing. A footstomp here\, a shout-out there\, a fiery solo\, and it’s cooked. Simple\, elegant\, illuminating. \nThe New Standards started in 2005 as an off-shoot project. Since then\, TNS has grown into a globe-spanning adventure\, filling theaters and clubs around the world. Additionally\, they have created several albums\, videos\, cartoons\, dance/theater projects\, and ancillary gewgaws that have charmed and delighted faithful fans. \nAll three are fans of great songwriting. However\, they sensed a lack of an interesting jazz trio repertoire beyond the usual “old standards”. Thus\, they got together originally to play and sing their favorite songs from every era\, particularly post-1960s pop music. Familiar tunes in a stripped-down acoustic setting\, leaving room for solos and arrangements with the freedom of jazz. Yet\, they never fully abandon the modest soul of pop and rock. \nAnother thing: though you may associate an acoustic tango version of Britney Spears’s “Toxic” with camp\, TNS is not a lounge or novelty act. One listen to their music reveals that they take their music-making as well as their jobs as entertainers seriously. \nAnd yet\, they are very funny. \nRecommended for fans of Joe Henry\, Semisonic\, The Suburbs and Dylan Hicks.

SUMMARY:The Bad Plus
DESCRIPTION:“finely orchestrated\, catchy original tunes\, and a knack for radically reconstituted pop covers.” – The New York Times\n  \nThe Bad Plus are the ultimate originals. A democratic unit with a clear vision and a refusal to conform to convention. For the past two decades\, they have played with spirit and adventure and have made their own rules. Moreover\, they do so with a bold sense of creativity and intent. Avoiding easy categorization\, The Bad Plus has won critical acclaim and a legion of fans worldwide. Further\, their unique sound and flair for live performance make them a must-see ensemble. \nNow in their twenty-fifth year\, The Bad Plus continues to push boundaries. Here\, founding members Reid Anderson (bass) and Dave King (drums) embark on a new piano-less incarnation of the band. Also\, Ben Monder (guitar) and Chris Speed (tenor saxophone) join the group\, instigating a new wave of excitement and anticipation. These new voices are re-energizing their sound and inspiration. The Bad Plus have constantly searched to bridge genres and techniques. Additionally\, they explore the infinite possibilities of exceptional musicians working in perfect sync. \nThe Bad Plus released their fifteenth studio album\, self-titled as a dynamic new quartet\, in 2022. Evolution is necessary for life and creativity\,” said Dave King and Reid Anderson. “We’ve evolved\, but we’re still The Bad Plus.” \nThis is The Bad Plus in their most creative and expressive form. This is The Bad Plus now. \nRecommended for fans of Brad Mehldau\, Joshua Redman\, Kneebody and Kurt Rosenwinkel.
