SUMMARY:Ron Sexsmith
DESCRIPTION:“nimble wordplay… wistful and gorgeous” – American Songwriter\n  \nRon Sexsmith is a three-time Juno award-winning singer songwriter from Ontario. The melodic songs of the 1960s drew Ron to music from an early age. There\, he heard them on the radio and his mom’s record collection. Further\, Buddy Holly and Elton John were his earliest musical heroes. He always loved to sing and started playing guitar at age fourteen. However\, he didn’t truly become a songwriter until he was twenty-one. \nRon moved his young family to Toronto to further pursue a career in music. There\, he worked as a courier by day\, while performing in the clubs by night. He formed the band Ron Sexsmith and The Uncool and started gaining attention from music label executives. But all passed on signing him. \nIn 1991 he released his first full-length album\, Grand Opera Lane. The Canadian music industry rejected the album\, although it found its way to Los Angeles. Then\, Ron signed his first music publishing deal followed by a recording contract. \nSexsmith released his self-titled label debut album in 1995. The melancholic tone and sparse acoustic arrangements of the album met with disapproval from his label. However\, an enthusiastic endorsement from Elvis Costello drew media attention and the album was declared a critical success. Rolling Stone wrote: “He just may be the most fluent balladeer to come along since Tim Hardin or Harry Nilsson.” \nHe has built a steadfast reputation with critics and with some of his own songwriting heroes. These include Elton John\, Ray Davies\, John Prine\, Gordon Lightfoot\, Leonard Cohen and Paul McCartney. Additionally\, Sexsmith is loved for his characteristically honest\, sensitive\, and enduring approach to the songwriting craft. \nRecommended for fans of Tim Hardin\, Pernice Brothers\, Del Amitri and Martin Sexton. \n📸: Kerry Vergeer

Her artistry is — to borrow a descriptor The New Yorker favored — “dazzling.” \nShe released Sonicwonderland in 2023\, debuting perhaps the most expressive\, dynamic and versatile working band of her career. Featuring Hadrien Feraud on bass\, Gene Coye on drums and trumpeter Adam O’Farrill\, the group furthered Hiromi’s distinctive musical alchemy. Here\, she melds the spirit of classic jazz-rock fusion with classically rooted virtuosity\, entrancing funk\, pop flourishes and\, through O’Farrill’s trumpet\, acoustic jazz’s state of the art. \nThe album also did a remarkable job of capturing Hiromi’s mastery as a live entertainer. As The Guardian noted\, “Sonicwonderland is perhaps the closest thing to Hiromi’s onstage exuberance.” \nBut that was only the beginning. \nSonicwonder has continued to tour and work together consistently\, advancing their deep chemistry and fearless sense of interplay. The results can be heard on Hiromi’s new album\, 2025’s Out There. Here\, the group’s powerful rapport meets the pianist’s astonishing abilities as a composer on equal footing. \nRecommended for fans of Chick Corea\, Keith Jarrett\, Herbie Hancock and Weather Report. \n📸: Mitsuru Nishimura

This became the start of a long and vibrant career in music and the arts. * At its core\, his music is rooted in the vulnerability of the singer-songwriter tradition: raw lyrics\, expressive vocals\, and melodies that resonate long after the last note. But what sets Scottie apart is the way these intimate songs expand into something cinematic — incorporating string arrangements\, ambient atmospheres\, acoustic bass\, guitar\, and dynamic drums\, all carefully woven into a cohesive\, immersive experience. \nFrom a lifetime spent on the road\, on the stage and in the recording studio\, his lyrics convey a cathartic approach to writing. “If you can tell me how you do it\, maybe I can find a better way to cope.” \nRecommended for fans of Mose Allison\, Ruthie Foster\, Eric Bibb and Dr. John.

SUMMARY:Brad Mehldau - Solo
DESCRIPTION:“Mehldau is the most influential jazz pianist of the last 20 years” – The New York Times\n  \nOne of the most lyrical and intimate voices of contemporary jazz piano\, Brad Mehldau has forged a unique path. Here\, he embodies the essence of jazz exploration\, classical romanticism and pop allure. Mehldau has garnered critical acclaim as a bandleader\, and major international exposure in collaborations with Pat Metheny\, Renee Fleming\, and Joshua Redman. Furthermore\, Mehldau continues to garner numerous awards and admiration from both jazz purists and music enthusiasts alike. His forays into melding musical idioms have seen brilliant reworkings of songs by contemporary songwriters. He covers The Beatles\, Cole Porter\, Radiohead\, Paul Simon\, Gershwin and Nick Drake\, among others. Also\, he has earned recognition for the ever-evolving breadth of his own significant catalogue of original compositions. With his self-proclaimed affection for popular music and classical training\, “Mehldau is the most influential jazz pianist of the last 20 years”. (The New York Times) \nMehldau’s musical personality forms a dichotomy. He is first and foremost an improviser. He cherishes the surprise and wonder occurring from a spontaneous musical idea that is expressed directly\, in real time. But he also has a deep fascination for the formal architecture of music\, and it informs everything he plays. In his most inspired playing\, the actual structure of his musical thought serves as an expressive device. As he plays\, he listens to how ideas unwind\, and the order in which they reveal themselves. Each tune has a strongly felt narrative arch\, whether it expresses itself in a beginning\, an end\, or something left intentionally open-ended. The two sides of Mehldau’s personality—the improviser and the formalist—play off each other. Thus\, the effect is often something like controlled chaos. \nRecommended for fans of Chick Corea\, Herbie Hancock and Ahmad Jamal. \n📸: Yoshika Horita

SUMMARY:Terence Blanchard
DESCRIPTION:“Blanchard’s body of work is one of the broadest and most imposing of any living jazz musician.” — New York Times\n  \nEight Grammy Awards\nTwo Emmy Nominations\nTwo Oscar Nominations\n2024 NEA Jazz Master \nTerence Blanchard has been a consistent artistic force for making powerful musical statements concerning painful American tragedies – past and present. A true Renaissance man\, Blanchard stands tall as one of jazz’s most-esteemed trumpeters. Moreover\, he defies expectations by creating a spectrum of artistic pursuits. Boundary-breaking and genre-defying\, Blanchard is recognized globally as a dazzling soloist and a prolific composer. Additionally\, he has written for film\, television\, opera\, Broadway\, orchestras and for his own ensembles. In fact\, leading theater magazine TheaterMania recently cited Blanchard as “the most exciting American composer working in opera today.”  \nBlanchard is an eight-time Grammy winner and twice Oscar-nominated film composer. In 2022\, he became only the second African American composer to be nominated twice for an Oscar in the original score category. There\, he duplicated Quincy Jones’ feat from 1967’s In Cold Blood and 1985’s The Color Purple. Blanchard’s work has placed him at the forefront of giving voice to human rights\, civil rights\, and racial injustice. Further\, this includes the 2015 album Breathless\, an elegy for Eric Garner\, who was killed by police. Garner’s words\, “I can’t breathe\,” became a civil rights rallying cry.  \nBlanchard is also heralded as a two-time opera composer. His Fire Shut Up in My Bones premiered at the Metropolitan Opera to open their 2021-22 season. Here\, it became the first opera by an African American composer to premiere at the Met in its 138-year history. The recording of those performances received a Grammy award for Best Opera Recording. Furthermore\, The New York Times heralded Fire as “inspiring\,” “subtly powerful” and “a bold affecting adaptation of Charles Blow’s work.” \nRecommended for fans of Wynton Marsalis\, Art Blakey\, Joshua Redman and Esperanza Spalding. \n📸: Cedric Angeles

SUMMARY:Sarah Morris: Say Yes Album Release
DESCRIPTION:“Sarah soars with ease… Wow.” – Americana Highways\n  \nSarah Morris has a habit of missing the forest. From the day the Minneapolis-based singer-songwriter picked up a guitar\, she’s been too busy crafting love letters to the details of the trees. Morris’ endearingly honest\, expertly penned songs encourage audiences to pull away from the big picture. Then\, we are invited to get caught up in the magic of our everyday minutia. Morris grants us permission to escape into stories at once hauntingly familiar and uniquely her own.  \n2023’s Here’s To You\, her fifth album of original material\, sees Morris shedding some country swagger. Thus\, this album favors a lusher\, more celestial sound. With layers of harmonies and synths orbiting her band’s guitar\, bass and drums\, Morris’ clarion voice shines brightly. Whether they’re celebration songs\, grief songs\, or gift songs\, you feel devotion to her craft in every line. Dave Franklin of The Big Takeover declared Here’s To You “a triumph. An album of space and restraint\, any note played\, every word uttered feels perfectly and purposely placed”.   \nIn addition to being a 2018 Kerrville New Folk winner\, she recently earned third place at the 2023 Songwriter Serenade. Also\, Morris was chosen as a finalist for Telluride Troubadour. Additionally\, she took second place at the 2016 MerleFest Chris Austin Songwriting Competition.  \nMorris is deeply committed to the Twin Cities’ life-giving music community. Here\, she hosts an online interview program called “Hey\, I Miss You” to amplify the work of her peers. As a writer\, lover\, mother\, and witness\, Morris invites us to join her in missing the forest for the trees. There\, her songs count and celebrate the glorious details of our messy\, magical\, everyday lives. \nRecommended for fans of JD Souther\, Suzy Bogguss\, Teddy Thompson and Mary Chapin Carpenter.

SUMMARY:The Belfast Cowboys
DESCRIPTION:“conjures up the spirit and the songs of Ireland’s greatest export” – Chicago Tribune\n  \nThe Belfast Cowboys is a nine-piece\, horn-driven band from Minneapolis that specializes in the music of Van Morrison. Entering their third decade\, they are adept at mixing rock\, blues\, roots and soul sounds. Led by veteran songwriter/guitarist Terry Walsh\, the Cowboys have flourished in the renowned Minnesota music scene. They have consistently packed houses and wowed crowds since 2002. \nTerry Walsh got his start playing in various Twin Cities rock bands. He toured as Slim Dunlap’s bass player in 1997\, opening for Son Volt. In 2001 Terry hit upon the idea of forming a Van Morrison tribute band. Terry spent the rest of the year learning Van songs and building an all-star band. The band played their first show at the old 400 Bar on Saint Patrick’s Day 2002. \nMany musicians have played with the band\, but the ‘A’ team was soon established. It includes Dan Kowalke (guitar\, vocals\, Joe Baumgart (bass)\, Dave Kirby and Dave Haugen (drums\, backing vocals)\, Joe Loskota (keyboards\, backing vocals). The horn section includes Paul Gronert (sax)\, Matt Hanzelka (trombone)\, Tim Martin (trumpet)\, Vic Volare (sax\, flute). Bandleader Terry Walsh (lead vocals\, guitar\, harmonica\, piano). \nThe band has expanded its content over the years to include rock and soul covers. Terry’s own originals have become fan favorites. Now a beloved staple in Minnesota\, the 9-piece Belfast Cowboys averaged over 120 shows a year before the pandemic. The bar-tested troubadours are known for playing epic sets at their weekly Minneapolis gigs and drawing crowds to outdoor festivals. Occasionally they’ll venture beyond the Midwest to play Ireland\, Phoenix\, and New York’s Times Square. Once they opened for the band Chicago in front of 15\,000 people. \nRecommended for fans of Bruce Springsteen\, G.B. Leighton\, Tina and the B-Sides and Van Morrison.
