SUMMARY:Bizhiki
DESCRIPTION:“artfully use powwow vocals as a counterpoint to melody-driven arrangements… their power is commanding” – Guardian\n  \nUnbound\, Bizhiki’s 2024 album\, opens with a single\, trembling chord that rises and descends before meeting a warm\, beguiling voice. This voice sings in a tradition that people have heard in this northern river country for millennia. The music that follows is a soulful dialogue between the ancient tradition of powwow singing and a contemporary musical palette. On Unbound\, Bizhiki entwines the powwow style with synthesized voice modulation\, and accents hand drumming with electronic samples and beats. The harmonies and resonances on this album are equal parts cultural and musical. \nMany of the songs on this album go back to when the spirit of the Bizhiki was forged\, over a decade ago\, on the banks of Wisconsin’s Chippewa River. Dylan Bizhikiins Jennings\, one of the two principal Native voices on the album\, remembers getting an invitation to play the Eaux Claires festival in 2015. “I was driving up in Cornucopia\, Wisconsin — way out in the middle of nowhere —and I got a call.” There was a festival on the Ojibwe’s ancestral homelands\, and the organizers wouldn’t feel right without the involvement of the land’s native communities. “I agreed\,” he remembers. “And I told them I wished more people thought like this. That they would say ‘we’re gonna give your people space and just invite you to do what you wanna do.’” \nBizhiki’s Unbound is a collaboration between a group of singers and musicians at a particular time and place. All of them look to help by exchanging ideas in an open-ended dialogue. Bizhikiins Jennings says there’s a lesson here for himself and his new group. “Just like in life\, we’re learning and we’re maturing\, and we’re becoming who we are.” \nRecommended for fans of Bon Iver\, Keith Secola\, Jeremy Dutcher and Northern Cree.

SUMMARY:Toronzo Cannon
DESCRIPTION:“exceptionally gifted… man\, he can play” – Blues Blast\n  \n“I want my songs to be heard and experienced\, not just listened to\,” says cliché-defying\, internationally beloved Chicago bluesman Toronzo Cannon. Cannon is on the cutting edge of today’s contemporary blues scene. Critics hail him as one of the genre’s most creative artists. Fans love him for his richly detailed\, truth-telling original songs\, blistering\, inventive guitar work and impassioned vocals.  \nHis heroes inspire his sound. On his latest release\, 2024’s Shut Up And Play!\, Cannon blazes his own path with eleven emotionally charged originals. His powerful\, cathartic guitar solos and his soulfully authoritative voice fuel his imaginative songs. \nShut Up And Play! features Cannon\, a former Chicago bus driver\, delivering timeless stories of common experiences. His lyrics are set ablaze by his passionate and focused guitar playing. Cannon sings of the heartbreak of lost love\, the humor of daily life\, and the pain of feeling invisible. Chicago’s New City declared\, “Toronzo Cannon spins the innate human capacity of misery and regret into a kind of furious ecstasy.” \n“I write what I know\, what I feel\,” Cannon says. “Listen to the lyrics. I am a Black man in America. These are NOT protest songs. I try to create honest\, common sense understanding with my songs.” \nCannon has earned ten Blues Music Award nominations. Further\, as his fan base expands\, so do his friendships with famous musicians. Gary Clark\, Jr. declared\, “Toronzo is a beast. He lights the room up.” Joe Bonamassa rightly pronounced\, “Toronzo’s a great guitar player\, excellent vocalist and an amazing personality.” \nRecommended for fans of Lonnie Brooks\, Walter Trout\, Bernard Allison and Corey Stevens.

SUMMARY:The Cookers: 20th Anniversary Tour
DESCRIPTION:“A dream team of forward-leaning hard-bop” – New York Times\n  \nDonald Harrison\, saxophone\nBilly Harper\, saxophone\nCecil McBee\, bass\nGeorge Cables\, piano\nEddie Henderson\, trumpet\nDavid Weiss\, trumpet\nBilly Hart\, drums \nExperience counts\, especially in jazz. The more time musicians spend interpreting tunes and interacting with others\, the more articulation an audience can expect. You can hear the fruits of such work in the expressive language The Cookers bring to the bandstand. This exciting all-star septet summons an aggressive mid ‘60s spirit with a potent collection of expansive post-bop originals. They have the requisite killer instincts and pyrotechnic playing expected of some of the heaviest hitters today. \nBilly Harper\, Cecil McBee\, George Cables\, Eddie Henderson\, and Billy Hart started in the heady era of the mid ‘60s. That period found the dimensions of hard bop morphing from their original designs. Further\, each artist helped facilitate the process as members of some of the most important bands of the era. Hart and Henderson were members of Herbie Hancock’s groundbreaking Mwandishi group. Cecil McBee anchored Charles Lloyd’s great ’60s quartet alongside Keith Jarrett and Jack DeJohnette. Billy Harper was part of Lee Morgan’s last group\, and also Max Roach’s Quartet and Art Blakey’s Jazz Messengers. George Cables was featured in groups led by Sonny Rollins\, Joe Henderson\, Freddie Hubbard\, Dexter Gordon and Art Pepper. \nDavid Weiss and Donald Harrison are from a more recent generation and are the youngest members of the band. There\, they gained experience performing with Art Blakey\, Bobby Hutcherson\, Freddie Hubbard\, Charles Tolliver\, Roy Haynes and Herbie Hancock. \nRecommended for fans of the Jazz Messengers\, Lee Morgan\, Herbie Hancock and the SFJazz Collective.

SUMMARY:Maria Schneider Orchestra
DESCRIPTION:“breathtaking\, full of inspired composition and musicianship.” – DownBeat\n  \nMaria Schneider’s music has been described as “evocative\, majestic\, heart-stoppingly gorgeous\, epic and beyond categorization.” Blurring the boundaries between jazz and classical traditions\, she is among the few artists to receive Grammy Awards in multiple genres. She has received honors in jazz and classical categories\, as well as for her work with David Bowie. \nSince her debut recording\, 1994’s Evanescence\, Schneider has developed a distinctive compositional language for her 18-member orchestra. She writes specifically for the individualistic voices within the ensemble. The group has performed worldwide\, and Schneider has guest-conducted more than ninety ensembles across thirty countries. \nHer most recent project\, 2026’s American Crow\, expands her work into a cinematic dimension. Released as both a music video and EP\, the piece pairs sweeping orchestration with striking visual imagery. Schneider uses jazz to illustrate the art of listening\, a practice she feels could help heal our fractured cultural landscape. The work continues her group’s exploration of collective listening and the emotional power of large-ensemble storytelling. \nSchneider’s double album\, 2020’s Data Lords was a Pulitzer Prize Finalist and won two Grammy Awards. It was named Jazz Album of the Year by the Jazz Journalists Association and NPR and received France’s Grand Prix de l’Académie du Jazz. The project fused her artistic vision with her longstanding advocacy around technology and culture. As NPR’s Nate Chinen wrote\, it “amounts to the most daring work of Schneider’s career.” \nHer honors include fourteen Grammy nominations and seven Grammy Awards\, and designation as an NEA Jazz Master. She has also been elected to the American Academy of Arts and Letters\, and received the ASCAP Concert Music Award. \nRecommended for fans of Toshiko Akiyoshi\, Thad Jones/Mel Lewis Orchestra\, Terence Blanchard and Carla Bley.

DESCRIPTION:“brooding soul eloquence… and folk-infected naturalness.”  – NPR\n  \nGospel and blues\, melodic sensibility\, and honest emotion… \nBased in Minnesota\, with roots in Tennessee\, Chastity Brown grew up surrounded by country and soul music. In the gospel church of her childhood\, she played saxophone and drums. She also found her singing voice and a passion for music. NPR’s “Favorite Sessions\,” CMT\, American Songwriter\, the London Times and Paste Magazine have all featured her. She has shared the stage with artists as diverse as Ani Difranco\, Andrea Gibson\, Indigo Girls\, The National\, Justin Vernon\, and Micheal Kiwanuka. \nBrown’s latest\, 2022’s Sing To The Walls\, is a sonically expansive album\, mining the roots of Americana\, folk\, and soul music. Chastity delivers her stories in a style that feels remarkably timely\, modern\, and forward-thinking. These songs unfold with Chastity’s expressive voice and expansive melodies\, leading the listener through intertwining tendrils of atmospheric sounds. \nBetween writing sessions she’s been vibing to chilled-out\, forward thinking artists like Leon Bridges\, H.E.R.\, SZA\, and Daniel Caesar. Like them\, she expands beyond genre and her folk/roots history to encompass her appreciation of all Black American musical art forms. “I also want to poke at what the blues is\,” Chastity reflects. “It has a lot of stereotypes\, like it’s mostly only played by blue-eyed white guys now. But what about Bessie Smith and Ma Rainey? I feel so closely connected\, in a pure\, undeviating lineage\, to the heritage of being a Black\, queer blues woman.” \n📸: Brad Ogbonna \nRecommended for fans of Amythyst Kiah\, Rhiannon Giddens\, Valerie June and Brittany Howard.

SUMMARY:Steely Dane
DESCRIPTION:“the band is energetic and sounds amazing” – Milwaukee Magazine\n  \nIn 2010\, co-founders David Adler and David Stoler (The Steely Daves) put together a tribute show for Steely Dan. There\, they would feature the best musicians in the Madison\, WI music scene. Madison is located in Dane County\, WI\, thus the name.  \nThe first Steely Dane show featured over thirty of Madison’s best rock and jazz musicians\, and it sold out. Not ones to waste a herculean effort of arranging a full night’s worth of the Dan’s best stuff\, the crew decided to do it again\, and again… and oops\, now it’s no longer a show\, it’s a BAND.  \nSince then\, the band has trimmed down to the current fourteen-piece family. Now\, that features a four-piece horn section\, two female backup singers\, two guitars\, two keyboards\, vibes\, and percussion. Here\, they have all the instruments necessary to recreate the amazing mixes of the Dan’s albums and live performances. Moreover\, the band has won multiple awards for best tribute band and sold out theaters from Chicago to Minneapolis. Additionally\, they are a perennial favorite at summer festivals as well.  \nTheir songbook features over fifty songs from both Steely Dan and Donald Fagen’s solo career. This allows them to play different shows night after night. Furthermore\, they have even performed complete album shows for The Royal Scam\, Aja\, and Gaucho. \nRecommended for fans of Steely Dan\, Donald Fagen\, Fleetwood Mac and The Eagles.

SUMMARY:Los Lobos
DESCRIPTION:“one of the hottest live acts on the planet” – BBC\n  \nIt’s a matter of time. Fifty years to be exact. And in that time Los Lobos have created an unprecedented body of work\, a legacy of greatness. The numbers are staggering: 100+ gigs a year for five decades running\, crossing millions of miles to rock millions of fans. And that’s just at the live shows. \nThey’ve also recorded seventeen studio albums\, seven live LPs\, three compilations\, two EPs\, two DVDs\, and contributed over forty guest appearances on their friends’ recordings. They have garnered five Grammys\, an Austin City Limits Hall of Fame induction and the ALMA Ritchie Valens Pioneer Award. \nBut beyond all the hoopla and applause (and the source of it all\, really) is the tremendous heart. Rather\, hearts. Cinco corazones. Five blood brothers who have dedicated their off-stage time to helping others\, working for peace and justice. Further\, they’ve penned some of the most literate and important music of their time. They transform the hard cries from the East L.A. barrio into songs of hope\, tales of common folk finding ways to endure. \nThe young wolves were weaned on late-night radio’s soul\, R&B\, and doo-wop. Were cured through the African-American currents of the blues\, jazz\, and rock ‘n’ roll. An amalgam. As proud Chicanos\, their songs have always glistened with the distillation from their Mexican and Latin American roots. \nQuite simply\, they are one of the tightest\, one of the best\, one of the most prolific bands ever. And\, amazingly\, with the original founding members as the pack the entire time. Unprecedented. As their liner notes put it\, quite simply: “Los Lobos still are David Hidalgo\, Louie Pérez\, Jr.\, Cesar Rosas\, Conrad Lozano\, Steve Berlin.” \n📸: Piero F. SUMMARY:Jorma Kaukonen
DESCRIPTION:“a pioneer of San Francisco psychedelia” – Rolling Stone\n  \nJorma Kaukonen is one of the most highly respected interpreters of American roots music\, blues\, and rock. His storied career has already spanned a half-century. He is also a member of the Rock & Roll Hall of Fame and a Grammy recipient. Jorma was at the forefront of popular rock and roll\, one of the founders of the San Francisco sound and a progenitor of Psychedelic Rock. He is a founding member of two legendary bands\, Jefferson Airplane and the still-touring Hot Tuna.  \nJorma Kaukonen is a music legend and one of the finest singer-songwriters in his field. He continues to tour\, bringing his unique styling to old blues tunes while presenting new songs of weight and dimension. His secret is in playing spontaneous\, unfiltered music\, with an individual expression of personality. In 2016\, Jorma\, Jack Casady and the other members of Jefferson Airplane received the Grammy Lifetime Achievement Award. This was to recognize their contributions to American music. \nIn 2019 St. Martin’s Press published Jorma‘s autobiography\, Been So Long: My Life and Music. He wrote this to express his life both in and out of the music world. As Kaukonen describes\, “My story is my story. Having told bits and pieces of it over my lifetime to a treasured few\, it was time to tell all to a bigger audience… From rehearsals and jams in small apartments and tiny back rooms to Monterey\, Woodstock\, Altamont\, the Rock & Roll Hall Of Fame\, the world of the Grammys and beyond… this is part of the road I live on. This is my embryonic journey and much\, much more!” \nRecommended for fans of Hot Tuna\, Jefferson Airplane\, Leo Kottke and Doc Watson.

He is revered for his countless incendiary live performances. Additionally\, he has built a loyal following of fans\, including critics and superstar artists. He is without a doubt what Billboard calls “The real thing.” \nSexton’s career in music has unfolded like the stories in one of his sweetly redemptive songs. He got his start busking on streets and performing at open mics. Since then\, he has gone on to be praised by modern legends such as John Mayer and Dave Matthews\, who calls him one of his favorite singer-songwriters. Sexton’s songs of grappling and gratitude were the soundtrack to John Mayer’s early gigging years and made an indelible impact on the budding songwriter. Mayer says: “This is the music of my LIFE.” \nRecommended for fans of The Beatles\, Brett Dennen\, Josh Ritter and Mason Jennings.
