SUMMARY:Pure Prairie League
DESCRIPTION:“soaring harmonies\, lilting love songs\, and rollicking Southern rockers” – No Depression\n  \nPure Prairie League continues to embellish its rich fifty-plus year history of one of country-rock’s pioneering forces. There\, they began in mid-Sixties Ohio as a group of friends playing cover tunes. Now\, the present-day unit features the propulsive team of drummer Scott Thompson and bassist Jared Camic. Additionally\, keyboard master Randy Harper\, guitar ace/vocalist Jeff Zona and pedal steel/saxophonist John Heinrich. Here\, as one reviewer recently wrote: “PPL’s sound combines sweet memories with edgy\, contemporary muscle. Their vocals are as strong as Kentucky moonshine and the musicianship and performance skills are as sharp as a straight razor”. \nPPL’s eponymous first album has been hailed as a major early influence in the emerging popularity of country-rock music. Then\, their second effort\, the multi-platinum Bustin’ Out featured the Craig Fuller-penned classic “Amie”\, along with other gems of the genre. Also\, over several albums and countless shows\, a legacy has been forged and enriched. The band has enjoyed contributions from several noteworthy members\, including original co-founder George Ed Powell\, and Cincinnati’s legendary Goshorn Brothers. Also\, Country Hall of Famers Gary Burr and Vince Gill\, award-winning writer Jeff Wilson (three Top twenty singles)\, top Nashville session vocalist Curtis Wright and others. Furthermore\, they have featured guest appearances from Chet Atkins\, Johnny Gimble\, Emmylou Harris\, David Sanborn\, Don Felder (Eagles)\, and more. \nMoreover\, the new generation: Keith Urban\, Nickel Creek\, Wilco\, Counting Crows and more cite PPL as a major influence. \nNow\, with the release of 2024’s Back On Track\, PPL brings it all back home with a dozen new songs. Here\, they complete the circle begun in 1970 and continues to this day. \nRecommended for fans of Poco\, The Doobie Brothers\, The Eagles and The Flying Burrito Brothers.

SUMMARY:The Belfast Cowboys
DESCRIPTION:“conjures up the spirit and the songs of Ireland’s greatest export” – Chicago Tribune\n  \nThe Belfast Cowboys is a nine-piece\, horn-driven band from Minneapolis that specializes in the music of Van Morrison. Entering their third decade\, they are adept at mixing rock\, blues\, roots and soul sounds. Led by veteran songwriter/guitarist Terry Walsh\, the Cowboys have flourished in the renowned Minnesota music scene. They have consistently packed houses and wowed crowds since 2002. \nTerry Walsh got his start playing in various Twin Cities rock bands. He toured as Slim Dunlap’s bass player in 1997\, opening for Son Volt. In 2001 Terry hit upon the idea of forming a Van Morrison tribute band. Terry spent the rest of the year learning Van songs and building an all-star band. The band played their first show at the old 400 Bar on Saint Patrick’s Day 2002. \nMany musicians have played with the band\, but the ‘A’ team was soon established. The horn section includes Paul Gronert (sax)\, Matt Hanzelka (trombone)\, Tim Martin (trumpet)\, Vic Volare (sax\, flute). Now a beloved staple in Minnesota\, the 9-piece Belfast Cowboys averaged over 120 shows a year before the pandemic. The bar-tested troubadours are known for playing epic sets at their weekly Minneapolis gigs and drawing crowds to outdoor festivals. Occasionally they’ll venture beyond the Midwest to play Ireland\, Phoenix\, and New York’s Times Square. Once they opened for the band Chicago in front of 15\,000 people. \nRecommended for fans of Bruce Springsteen\, G.B. Leighton\, Tina and the B-Sides and Van Morrison.

Witt recorded the album live in New York City with producer Joe Henry and a band she assembled specifically for the project. Now\, the album occupies a space suspended between transcendence and intimacy. On it\, Witt channels “eternal unconditional love” and “the place suspended between heaven and earth.” \nDavid Lynch’s influence and memory profoundly shaped the album. There\, his impact on Witt stretches back to her first film role as Alia in Dune at age seven. “I can’t imagine who I would be without David Lynch\,” Witt reflects. “He is weaved throughout the fabric of my life.” Throughout Between Heaven and Earth\, Witt explores what she learned from Lynch “regarding love. The eternal nature of it\, the idea that only love is real.” Moreover\, she describes his presence as palpable during the record’s creation. “David was with us every day in the studio. All six of us in the band felt his presence.” \nWitt is widely recognized for her acclaimed acting career spanning film\, television\, and stage. However\, music remains a constant throughline in her life. She is a classically trained pianist who supported herself as a musician when she first moved to Los Angeles. Also\, Witt integrates music into her creative identity\, through her own songwriting and in many of her onscreen roles. She’s released multiple full-length albums\, including Revisionary History (2015)\, The Conduit (2021)\, and I Think I’m Spending Christmas With You (2024). Here\, Between Heaven and Earth represents the latest chapter in that ongoing musical journey. \nWitt tracked the album live over four days\, recording vocals and instrumentation simultaneously. There\, she embraced what she calls a “visceral and eternal” energy\, one that “could never be replicated.” Guided by Henry’s vision and the chemistry of the musicians in the room\, the band created the songs instinctively and in-the-moment. Consequently\, the album features minimal overdubs and an openness to what Witt repeatedly refers to as “that place”. Thus\, the transcendent emotional state she connects to through Transcendental Meditation\, prayer\, creativity\, and Lynch’s work itself. \nThe songs on Between Heaven and Earth explore themes of longing\, fate\, healing\, surrender\, nostalgia\, gratitude\, and connection through what Witt describes as a lens of “insistent optimism.” The title track embraces “a mystical connection with a brand-new person.” Also\, they root themselves in “childlike faith in the possibility” and the belief that “it does no harm to dream.” On “Artifacts\,” Witt examines “releasing ancient lessons that no longer serve\,” gently excavating old wounds and learning “how to love.” Also\, “Kindred” channels the feeling of “walls crumbling” and “barriers evaporating in a fabric made of light and destiny.” Then\, “Build Me A Dream” reflects on “constructing the reality we wish to exist in” and recognizing “an eternal soul connection.” \nElsewhere\, songs like “Freeze Frame\,” “Test Drive\,” and “Blue Moon” meditate on alternate timelines and nostalgia. Also\, the peaceful acceptance of connections that were not meant to remain. On “Thank You\,” featuring John Paul White\, Witt transforms heartbreak into gratitude. Here\, Witt reflects on relationships that “cleared the way for new relationships and opportunities to come in.” On “Love Anyway\,” Witt sings about unconditional love that remains even when unreturned: “The love is what’s important. You love and give love without condition or expectation.” \nWitt closes the album with “The Director\,” a bonus track she describes as “communication with David” and “a collection of his words to me since he passed away.” She completed the song spontaneously during the album’s final day in the studio. There\, she recorded a single uninterrupted performance while the microphones continued running during lunch break. “I just knew when I played this one that it had arrived and was complete at last\,” she recalls. \nFor Witt\, Between Heaven and Earth ultimately explores connection — to spirit\, to memory\, to other people\, and to something larger than ourselves. “Too often\, it seems to me\, people imagine love in a vacuum\,” she explains. “I know love to be eternal and unconditional.” Thus\, the result is an album rooted not in bitterness or regret. Here\, it’s rooted in surrender\, gratitude\, wonder\, and the belief that “only love can change minds and hearts.” \n“What all these songs have in common is that there is no bitterness. No angst\, no revenge\, nothing resembling hatred or regret\,” Witt says. “This is my offering. May it bring you exactly where you need it to bring you.” \nPresave the album here\nRecommended for fans of Patty Griffin\, Over the Rhine\, Shawn Colvin and Natalie Merchant.

SUMMARY:Vieux Farka Touré
DESCRIPTION:“Notes fall from his fingers like rain on to water… kaleidoscopic” – Guardian\n  \nVieux Farka Touré\, often called “The Hendrix of the Sahara”\, hails from Niafunké\, Mali. He is the son of legendary Malian guitar player Ali Farka Touré\, who died in 2006. Ali came from a historical tribe of soldiers and defied his parents by becoming a musician. Thus\, when Vieux reached his teens\, he declared that he also wanted to be a musician. However\, his father disapproved because of the pressures he had experienced as a musician. Rather\, he wanted Vieux to become a soldier. Vieux eventually convinced his father to give him his blessing to pursue music shortly before Ali passed. \nInitially\, Vieux played drums and calabash at Mali’s Institut National des Arts\, but he secretly began playing guitar in 2001. When Vieux announced plans to record an album\, cancer had already weakened Ali Farka Touré. Ali recorded a couple of tracks with him. There\, those recordings\, which appear on Vieux’s debut CD\, rank among Ali’s final ones.  \nWhen the COVID pandemic hit in 2020 and all touring ground to a halt\, Vieux stayed focused on his craft at home. He worked tirelessly in the studio he built at his family’s compound. The resulting album\, 2022’s Les Racines\, finds Vieux returning to his deep roots. Here\, he explores the desert blues music that he spent most of his career experimenting with and expanding. In 2022 Vieux and Houston-based psych-rock superstars Khruangbin released a long-awaited collaborative album. Sir Elton John called it “one of the albums of the year – absolutely wonderful music.” \nWith each new project Vieux broadens his horizons\, embraces new challenges and further entrenches his reputation as one of the world’s most talented and innovative musicians. \nRecommended for fans of Ali Farka Touré\, Tinariwen\, Cheikh Lô and Khruangbin.
