Julius Rodriguez

On back-to back nights, the Dakota is welcoming two outstanding jazz pianists, one an esteemed veteran, the other a rising newcomer. Valdés, 84, the remarkable Cuban American mainstay, has been coming to the Dakota since its days in St. Paul. He has collected seven Grammys and seven Latin Grammys as well as being named NEA Jazz Master 2025. Valdés will be performing with his Royal Quartet in Minneapolis. Rodriguez, 27, was a child prodigy who was gigging in clubs in his native New York at age 11. The versatile musician has worked with Wu-Tang Clan, Wynton Marsalis and Meshell Ndegeocello, among others. When accompanying vocalist José James at the Dakota a couple of years ago, the pianist practically stole the show. In 2024, Rodriguez released his most recent album for Verve, “Evergreen.”
