a one-of-a-kind performer whose singing… has a sassiness bearing some comparison to that of heart-thumping blues queens Ma Rainey and Ida Cox.” –Downbeat

With influences ranging from Fats Domino and the Preservation Hall Jazz Band to Aretha Franklin and Tom Waits, the band is converting audiences one show at a time. So much more than just a blues act, DATV’s shows are filled with New Orleans charm, Memphis soul swagger, dark theatrical moments that evoke Kurt Weill, and tender gospel passages. Davina’s voice and stage presence defy category in a different way. Davina has been compared to Etta James, Amy Winehouse, Janis Joplin, Billie Holiday and Betty Boop, but comparisons don’t suffice. Sowers is a true original.

Judy-Collins-headshotAn Evening with Judy Collins and Ari Hest
Jun 23 at 7pm

“Folk Goddess”  – New York Times

A classical piano prodigy, she turned to folk music early on, embracing the social and musical elements of the movement. At the urging of her friend Leonard Cohen (whose songs she recorded on her early albums), Collins began writing and recording her own songs.  Folk music doesn’t produce stars bigger than Judy Collins. For nearly 50 years she has been performing and recording folk, pop, and art music at a very high level. Her crystal clear, pure soprano voice is just as captivating today as it is on her debut 1961 recording, A Maid of Constant Sorrow.

“…a superstar.” – Maya Angelou
“…the next Tina Turner.” – Robert Plant

While only in her early 30s, two-time Grammy nominee Shemekia Copeland is already a force to be reckoned with in the blues. She’s opened for the Rolling Stones, headlined at the Chicago Blues Festival and numerous festivals around the world, scored critics choice awards on both sides of the Atlantic (The New York Times and The Times of London), shared the stage with such luminaries as Buddy Guy, B.B. King, Mick Jagger, and Eric Clapton, and has even performed at the White House for President and Mrs. Obama. Heir to the rich tradition of soul-drenched divas like Ruth Brown, Etta James and Koko Taylor, the singer was presented with Taylor’s crown by her daughter, Cookie, on June 12, 2011 at the Chicago Blues Festival and given the honor of the new “Queen of the Blues” by official proclamation of the City of Chicago and the State of Illinois.
