Twin Cities Chanteuse Meets Gypsy Jazz Guitar Master
One of the Twin Cities’ favorite vocalists, Connie can swing the standards with the best of them. And she can hold her own with a Beatles book. And she sounds great in a hot club/gypsy jazz setting. She has recorded CD’s with all of these projects and more, and for her newest, ALL THE CATS JOIN IN, she’s joined by one of the premier gypsy jazz groups in the world, the John Jorgenson Quintet. With an eclectic repertoire ranging from popular standards to Lennon & McCartney, French chanson and Oscar-winning film songs, this CD – and this show – is filled with rhythm and romance.
Marking her tenth release on Minnehaha Music and third record in the hot club style of Django Reinhardt, vocalist Connie Evingson teams up with one of the leading groups in the hot club genre, the
John Jorgenson Quintet. “I knew I wanted to work with this fabulous band when I first heard them at Djangofest Northwest,” says Evingson. “We performed together in Minneapolis a year later and had so much fun, we decided to make this record.” The legendary Jon Hendricks, age 93, makes a guest appearance on the title track (“All the Cats Join In”), singing vocalese lyrics he penned to Lester Young’s “Tickle Toe” for Lambert, Hendricks and Ross’s classic album, Sing a Song of Basie (’57).
The adventurous songlist includes offerings by Lennon & McCartney (“I’ll Follow the Sun”, “World Without Love”), French singer/songwriter Keren Ann (“Jardin D’hiver”) and film composer John Williams (“Moonlight”, recorded by Sting for the film Sabrina) in addition to popular standards (“Solitude”, “Dream a Little Dream of Me”, “Black Orpheus”, “You’re Driving Me Crazy”, etc. ).
Known for taking divergent paths, Evingson’s past releases explored the music of Dave Frishberg (Little Did I Dream), the Beatles (Let it Be Jazz), Peggy Lee (Fever), Norman Gimbel (Sweet Happy Life), Django Reinhardt and world of gypsy jazz (Gypsy in My Soul, Stockholm Sweetnin’), Broadway (I Have Dreamed) and jazz masters (Some Cats Know). Her Gypsy in My Soul release brought her a nomination for JazzWeek Vocalist of the Year in ’05.
Based in Minneapolis, Evingson has made guest appearances with Jazz at Lincoln Center, A Prairie Home Companion, the JazzMN Orchestra, the Minnesota Orchestra, Toronto Symphony and others. She appears at various Twin Cities venues and is the featured artist on the Jungle Theater’s Jazz at the Jungle series. Grammy-winning guitarist John Jorgenson is known for his blistering guitar licks and mastery of a broad musical palette, having collaborated with the likes of Elton John, Bonnie Raitt, Luciano Pavarotti and Bob Dylan. A multi-instrumentalist, he is regularly featured on mandolin, saxophone, clarinet, bouzouki, pedal steel and vocals in addition to acoustic and electric guitar. One of the elite gypsy jazz players in the world, Jorgenson portrayed Django Reinhardt Head in the Clouds, starring Charlize Theron.

“Her delivery is refreshingly straightforward and sexy.. her performances carry the aroma of red wine and unfiltered cigarettes, sensual, slightly decadent and thoroughly wonderful” – C. Michael Bailey, All About Jazz
