Mavis Staples

This great American musical treasure refuses to slow down as her recent collabs with Hozier, Run the Jewels and Jon Batiste attest. More impressive, in the last decade or so, the Rock & Roll Hall of Famer, now 86, has made noteworthy albums produced by such hipsters as Jeff Tweedy, M. Ward, Ben Harper and Brad Cook, known for his work with Waxahatchee and Bon Iver. The gravelly voiced Staples has sung for years about freedom and civil rights, and last year she continued her social commentary on the Cook-produced “Sad and Beautiful World,” a stellar collection of passionate, reflective ballads. Opening is Lucius, the winning indie-pop duo who have sung with Staples at the Newport Folk Festival and the Eaux Claires fest.

Rodney Crowell

Rodney Crowell

Working with guitarist/producer Tyler Bryant of the Shakedown and his Austin musician pals, the alt-country veteran offered another winner with last year’s “Airline Highway.” Recorded in Louisiana, the album offers both romantic and geographical trips with a little help from Lukas Nelson, Ashley McBryde and Larkin Poe. It’s classic Crowell. Last month, he dropped a new single, “If I Could Speak to Leonard,” a slow mortality ballad about being in search of pathways. It’s a very moving, eloquent tip of the fedora to Leonard Cohen. The song will be on Crowell’s next album, “Then Again,” which was recorded two decades ago and comes out on June 26.
